    Shanghai Hungpu River cruise.
    Kitty M.

From the outset, my husband and I decided to suspend our disbelief that such a well-planned and inclusive tour of China could be offered at such a price, but we were very pleased!  The tour guides were awesome and extremely helpful; they went out of their way to accommodate our needs and were able to deal with fluctuations in itinerary, as the professionals they are! It is a lot to pack in to a few days in Beijing, but our guide Alan was great at getting us from here to there!  Our only comment would have been to possibly include a little more time for higher level shopping...  (He did manage to carve out an extra hour for us to visit the market near the Temple of Heaven. I think he realized that this became one of our group's favorite stops, but our scheduling was too tight to shop more than an hour!)  I speak for most of our newly found friends from Mexico, that we had a fabulous time touring and dining in Beijing... and our visits to the Great Wall, Summer Palace, Forbidden City and and shopping. The Yangtze River cruise was wonderfully serene, even though we happened upon all of the tour sites during the week of May Day holiday excursions. Food was plentiful and gave us chances to experiment with a new cuisine without trepidation. Regardless, everything came off without a hitch. The high speed train to the Yangtze cruise was great, as was the short visit to Shanghai. I think we were also fortunate in the small size of our group as a reason that we had so much fun. We would certainly consider Charming Travel for future tours!

Just came back from Japan and saw the beautiful cherry blossoms. It was a crowded due to high season but for the price and 4 Star accommodations I got for the tour you can't beat it.

David was working with Thea from 'All Inclusive Vacations' in Colorado for what should have been a romantic honeymoon package for us. They took in no consideration that it was our honeymoon. We decided we wanted to go with a Travel Agent because my husband and I had never been to Asia, we didn't know distances from locations (apparently neither did David) and we trusted them to put us in nice, romantic spots for our honeymoon. We would have been better off planning this trip ourselves from the start... From the moment we arrived, we stayed at the D Varee Diva Bally Silom in Bangkok for 3 nights (unfortunately) to a room with NO windows. Talk about traveling 40ish hours to be in a small, claustrophobic room with no ways of looking out! (while it's our first time in Asia), outlets that didn't work, and a bed light that was broken, and a mattress which was broken with collapsed springs that felt like you were sleeping on a rock. Not sure how this hotel managed to receive a 3 star rating, it really should be a 1-2 star. After being really frustrated, we got switched to a larger room with (condensation on windows) but at least we got day light - still no view. We went to take showers and the cheap, crappy towels ripped instantly as we dried off. The hotel was located right next to all the "nightlife" which mostly included men trying to hustle us into sex and ping pong shows... this was not a nice area to send a honeymooning couple, and frankly, it was an insult. We are not fraternity bros in college looking to objectify people to set the mood. David suggested a dinner cruise to be added to our itinerary with candle light. Which was a misleading description of the river cruise, we were on the bottom level without candlelight and had to rest on a railing next to a loudspeaker to be up on the deck to enjoy the sights. All the activities we enjoyed from this trip (I can thank myself for) No recommendations from David. I literally thought of the elephant treks, my husband thought of visiting the temples, I thought of visiting the tigers, and all of the locations. No thanks to him, we found a romantic dinner in Phuket (Ban Rim Paa Restaurant on Patong Beach). However, yet again, we were stuck in the ping pong district/ bar central. This time we stayed at the Aim Patong Hotel where we had a balcony, which faced the Bangla Boxing Area which over the loud speakers every 5 mins would BLAST "TONIGHT, TONIGHT, TONIGHT, BIG FIGHT, BIG FIGHT, BIG FIGHT 9 PM 9 PM....." OVER AND OVER for hours!! talk about romance, right??! Our hotel room was right off the elevator and had no shower! It has an extendable shower head but it was a tub. We spent literally all day traveling 4 hours outside of Phuket to ride the elephants which we'd requested to do and was super fun, but a very unexpected journey without any communication about how long it would be, and coming in the night before, being gone all day, left no time to see Phuket and the beach. Why did we even go there? The tour guide didn't understand too much English either so whenever we would ask how much further she would reply "half hour" "40 mins" etc... that's because we made multiple stops along the way so the entire time we were just left in the dark how long it would take to arrive at the sanctuary. Once we got to the sanctuary, we were confused as to why we were being asked if we wanted to change and to wait in the car. The biggest surprise at the elephant place was that they also had us signed up to bathe with them? Instead of what was included in our itinerary to trek with them. Luckily we could all communicate just enough to get off of the van in time before they took us to the watering hole and we would have missed out on our super cool trek. We wanted to see a Travel Agent for this reason, so we could see what we wanted to and they could help connect the trails, know the right hotels and areas, and help us decide how to make a nice trip. Instead we are still doing everything we planned but with what seems like little to no effort in professional and knowledgeable planning from Charming. We could have planned this whole thing online with most likely better results since being an expert in the area didn't apply here. We also specifically asked David about snakes. As I have a fear of them and didn't want that to be a part of our honeymoon. We went to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, where we saw 8 huge boa constrictors. Our guide informed us they are always there. Meanwhile, David made it seem like we would be in the clear of snakes. It would have been nice to been warned, and told about the ways you can walk around them. In conclusion, I recommend Asia Trails...they were very knowledgeable travel company in Thailand that we enjoyed doing our tours with. I would avoid Charming at all costs considering we wrote numerous emails about our frustration and complaints to have it drop off and be ignored! Not even an apology from them or check in!

Totally not the guide's fault, but there was a bit of huddling under awnings and leaping over puddles throughout the evening. Also, there were times we wished that the guides waited to tell stories when we were inside, instead of standing in the weather. We were a big group and they split us into two - we started in different places and met up halfway through. Several members of our group had food allergies. The best part of the evening was the diligence our guide took making sure he accommodated the special diet needs, including some bizarre allergies. There were no slip ups or mix ups, and there was a couple of things everyone could eat at each place. The stories we did hear were very interesting, although it was really limited to a couple of anecdotes here and there. There was more socializing and sampling than touring and learning the area's culinary history, which was fine. We felt like the delivery could have been more engaging and the tour more interactive but overall it was really enjoyable. Good variety of different restaurants, and this was one of the only tours we could find that could do an evening slot instead of just daytime. Food was pre-ordered, and all the choices were really good. A great way to learn about the area and try a lot of different things, while spending quality time with groupmates.

Well this little thing called coronavirus happened in the meantime, and so our March tour was shut down. They offered us a full refund or to postpone the tour for a later date. We opted for the full refund. This was in mid to late March. At the end of April, after weeks of delays and still no refund, I wrote a review on yelp expressing my frustration about this situation. That same day, the Fun Belly owner Carlos got in touch with me and over the next few messages basically told me that Fun Belly themselves don't handle billing/refunds (instead employing a company called EzTix), but that he would get in touch with his rep at EzTix and try to make things right. Within 2 days our refund had been issued. Wow. So while I didn't have the opportunity to go on the food tour, I still think it's important for prospective customers to know that Fun Belly has an owner with some real integrity. It would have been so easy for Carlos to say, "Well, the refund is out of my hands, go deal with it yourselves", but he went the extra mile to make things right. Once this shutdown is over and I'm actually allowed to leave my house, we'll definitely rebook for the food tour we never got an opportunity to go on. I know we'll be in good hands. Five stars for Fun Belly, 0 stars for EzTix.

Yet, I still try going with them occasionally because at least they stick close to the destinations on the itinerary, and the cost of the tour is still hard to beat relative to quality (base cost for 7 days to Zhangjiajie this year was $800 per person, hotel+most meals included). However, this year, it seems they've started to really improve the quality of the tours to China - so much so that I felt compelled to write a review to balance out the rating a bit more... but I can't speak to any other destinations, and perhaps I was lucky with my tour guide / experience. Great tour guides do make a huge difference, and mine was awesome overall. I went with Charming to Zhangjiajie this past month, and among all other tour companies I could've chosen, I picked Charming from reading their packed itinerary and decent 4-star hotel accommodations (these are considered "5-star" by China's standards). Also important to note that starting this year, Charming no longer has shopping tours in China! No more wasting time at shops. Tour guide: She was nice, professional and experienced (note she only spoke Chinese, which is fine considering the tour comments noted this is only a Chinese-speaking tour). She even waited with us on the last day to personally send off each one of us from the hotel when the tour ended, to ensure our transportation to the airport didn't run into issues. Most tour guides at this point would've gone home from my experience, so this was a surprise for us. Also unlike past experiences with Charming tour guides, the tour guide never asked for tips either, but seeing as how great she was, we voluntarily tipped her at the end. Hotel: Met 4-star standards (mostly stayed in large chains like Pullman and Ramada). There was one night where we stayed in a very old inn in Fenghuang Old Town (like the towels badly needed bleaching) but the tour guide did warn us that because we had to lower our standards as the village was still developing. The good thing was that the location was great for walking around at night to explore. Acceptable given the area. Itinerary: Jam packed in a good way! Expect to leave at 8am everyday to beat the crowds. Maybe it's also because we went to Zhangjiajie, where there's no shortage of things to see, but the tour guide made sure we made the most of our time there, so she did also recommend optional things to do. At no point did she ever force anyone to go to these places, which did require additional entrance or show fees. We went to 2 of the 3 suggested things to do, and gave us free time back if we didn't go to one of the places. Shopping: It's a non-shopping tour, so no stops for shops! Optional, but the tour guide did also recommend things like snacks and tea leaves to purchase during our bus ride. I imagine they get some extra commission this way since tours no longer have shopping stops, but you never feel obligated to buy anything, and I was free to pass on things. The tour guide did take anyone who was interested in purchasing silver jewelry or mugs (which is popular in Zhangjiajie apparently) to a store she's partially invested in / opened with relatives (and she disclosed so), and offered discounts. But also optional, and we only went after the tour was done / we dropped off everyone else at the hotel at night, so no pressure for anyone who didn't want to go. Food: This was probably the only point where I thought we could've went to better places. Maybe I'm asking for a lot given the price of the tour already includes hotel, but I think there's room for improvement. I'll give it to the tour guide for at least checking in after every meal to make sure we were full, and if anything needed to be changed. Whenever we asked for more vegetables, she also immediately asked the kitchen to cook more for us. They did make an effort to include chicken / beef / duck in most meals, and typically fish and soup can be expected as well. Hunan is tougher for those who don't eat spicy, and they were accommodating with lowering or removing spiciness. In general about China: The country is making improvements to tourism quality across the board. There's still a lot that needs to be done, but major cities are now easy to navigate when traveling alone, with metro connections being more common. Joining a tour will still make your life much easier when it comes to the countryside/national parks though. Also public toilets are still 90% squatting ones, but the rest areas are a lot cleaner / a little more modern than what I've seen in the past 10 years. I'm seriously considering finding another China tour to go with them on next year, and recommend giving Charming Holidays a shot for their improvements.
