When I told everyone I was going to Worcester for the weekend from Edinburgh, I got a whole lot of…read more"WHY?"s. Well, here's one reason. Jerk. The outdoor seating at The Firefly... on an evening in England where the day had been 26 degrees (got Celsius!) made me think that maybe, just maybe, if all of England was perfect like this everyday they would still rule the world. The colonies would want to be owned again (sans slavery and oppression etc.). But I digress, that shit will never happen... so we need to ignore this ideal of a perfect England, and just take the pub as a perfect pub. Reasons for perfection: (see photos) The front room: fireplace, antique chandelier, old tyme-y lampshades, big red velvet couches, a moose head over the fireplace and ARE YOU F**KING SERIOUS - Brooklyn Lager. My favorite beer in the world. And I know I am an exaggerator, and I know I say "my favorite (insert something here) ever" all the time. But for real, this is the greatest tasting lager of the entirety of the history of beer (in my humble opinion). The downstairs: Apparently they have bands down here, they didn't this night... but it was a proper looking porn-like lounge area with giant sofas and a good looking stage where you could definitely see some mediocre bands up really close before they sell out. Sometimes, not often, but sometimes, the bands play outside. Yes, I said it. The MFing outdoor garden: I have this friend, his name is Jack Johnson, maybe you've heard of him. Maybe (probably) you're sick of him because most of his songs sound alike. It's also pretty likely that you'd give anything for his life, I know I would. If I had minimal talent like him I would totally move to Hawaii, surf and sing songs about making pancakes for girls and playing my guitar all day while working on my tan in a hammock. But again, I digress - why don't you guys stop me when I do that? - The garden here looks like an old fashioned surf lounge where guys with long hair (rebels!) and tattoos (scandal!) sit with beers and talk about waves. Jack, would fit in here... and I could even stand to listen to Banana Pancakes (once, just once) while I am sitting on the couches with my feet up next to the lanterns LOVING my totally chill life. Worcester is a two thumbs up all you naysayers! So there.

We arrived for our 6.30 reservation and were promptly shown to our table by one of the friendliest waitresses ever. She plied us with alcohol and helped recommend tasty menu choices, food which arrived very quickly I might add. We had a feast. The food was very good, with standout dishes like the homemade nachos, (the best I've ever had) and a Xim Xim - Brazilian football legend, Pele's favourite meal (apparently). The meatballs were good, the empanadas were good, everything was good. Until we got the bill. Our whole reason for choosing Bodega was because one of our party is a student and a nurse, and Bodega advertise "20% off your bill for students" and "20% off your bill for NHS", so we figured we stood a pretty good chance of getting 20% off our bill. When the bill turned up we were told several stories as to why we can't use the discount: "Sorry student discount is not available Saturday nights" "NHS discount only covers your meal, everyone else has to pay full price" We checked on the website, we looked at the sign outside, nowhere did it mention these restrictions. "It's in our terms and conditions..." So we asked to see these terms and conditions, surprisingly the manager couldn't show us. Shocker. We finally settled on: "OK, well on this occasion I'll allow the discount on all of the food, but the drinks are going to be full price. That's the best I can do". The bill fiasco meant a meagre tip for our fantastic waitress, a real shame because up until that stage, she'd been superb.

The food is pretty damn good and the staff are lovely as is the decor. Everything is remarkably…read morewell priced, even cocktails. There were some issues with service when I first went here, but they seem to be ironed out now. Can recommend it.
