So I was craving a sandwich and I searched YELP! For a new place. I came across Charlie's Grocery and did not expect much.... but much I did receive! Listen it's a small corner grocery/convenience store... it reminds me of the corner store/bodega shops in New Orleans. Non-Pretentious straight to the point. However, this Italian sub was one of the best, biggest, and tastiest subs I've ever eaten! We walked up and the guy was standing there with his mask on at the door... he advised us that we could look over the menu and order in the car. My wife and I ordered one full Italian sub and a side of fries. The sandwich was HUGE and stuffed with meat, tasty quality meats. The bread was crispy and chewy and just all around fresh. Did not disappoint! My wife and I are on the hunt to find the best food this great city has to offer. Charlie's was on a short list for us as far as Deli's go.. so we made a trip late this Saturday morning. We ordered The Colossal on an everything bagel (for myself) and the BEC on a Kaiser roll (the wifey's). Although there was nothing that sent me over the moon about my sandwich, I was quite happy and very much enjoyed it. My wife's sandwich on the other hand left something to be desired.. I tried a bite after scarfing mine down, and found it mildly disappointing that there was such a difference between our two sandwiches. I personally believe that the bagel made much better for a breakfast sandwich, and that The Colossal is just that much better. If I could give a 3.5 rating, I would. Love this corner shop. Reminds me of my favorite corner store/deli in DC. We got the colossal and the turkey sub. Both were huge portions and made fresh on the spot. The colossal was one of the best things that have happened to me in Charleston. Among all the great biscuits, brunches, this is actually what I wanted. Bacon, egg, chicken tenders, hash brown, cheese all wrapped up in between a roll. While I don't recommend eating this every day, this is one hearty meal. The turkey sub was made with excellent high grade turkey and the quality of the meat was apparent. Rest of the sub was just as good as a sub with abundant toppings. I want to try the chicken parmesan next time as well as some of their other breakfast sandwiches. In summary, pricing was reasonable with big portions and high quality. These guys know how to make a Philly. The meat they use is amazing! I have had a few other things on the menu, and they have all been great. The Philly is what keeps bringing me back. They load it with meat, cheese, veggies, and your choice of condiments (and you can get it toasted or not). I could keep going but I think I have made my point. I dig this corner spot, for several reasons: 1. I live less than 1 block from the Jasper Street location, and am in the store at a minimum of 4 times weekly. 2. The brothers that work here are ALWAYS friendly, funny, and nice. 3. The falafel is really, really good - in the pita sandwich or just on its own (which they'll do, in whatever amount, fried or unprepared, by request). It's a family recipe, and they're quite proud of it. Apparently they are discussing selling their falafel at the farmers' market in the future. My good cook... my good man... everything is beautiful. Every time I come through that door I'm greeted by the good vibe of the falafel gods. It's like I'm Norm from "Cheers" except I'm Rat Finnegan from "right here." ahhhh Charlies. I've been going to Charlies since 1996 when I first arrived at College of Charleston. I lived on Morris about a block and half away for two years. While living on Morris I ate Charlie's falafel for lunch at least three days a week. When I started eating them they were $1.29 I think? They've definitely gone up, in price but still worth every cent. In the old day's the matriarch hand made the falafel everyday, and when they run out they were out. I think this is true to this day as I called it in and he had to make sure they had some. Seriously the best falafel in the entire world. Get it with hummus and hot sauce. My wife, before I introduced her to falafel, would get a meat sandwich and loved them. Always polite. Great little bodega if you need something quick for you house. Cheap beer and cigs back in the day. Lived in Columbia for 17 years now and still have Charlies number saved in my phone, and get it at least twice a year. I now buy extras to take home.
