I hadn't eaten all day and it around was 3 o'clock. That's a $14.00 sandwich plus the fries total $18.15. The problem with this place is you can't hardly get the food prepared properly. They will most likely forget something or put all the meat on one side among other foolishness. This time my sandwich had no beacon and no extra meat on it. I was so hungry I ate one side before I realized I got shorted. I tried to call about 4 times, no answer so I figured they know what they did. The food here is good if properly prepared but for that you have to be very lucky. Today, I was not. I'm about to give up on them. If I ever do buy another one, I'm checking it before I leave the store. You know how much they charge for bacon? And then don't give it to me. It ruined my meal.

We spend a week in Port Aransas every year and have been making an effort to try some of the…read morerecommended local spots each trip. With three younger kids, finding somewhere that they enjoy and that the adults also appreciate can sometimes be a challenge. On this visit, my cousin's wife recommended Surfside Sandwich Shoppe, so we met her and her two kids there and also invited some friends who live on the island. The first challenge was actually finding the place. Even with GPS, it's surprisingly easy to drive past because it's difficult to see until you're almost directly alongside it. Parking was also very limited and a little challenging with our group. Inside, most of the space is occupied by the kitchen and bar, while the outdoor seating area is considerably larger. The outdoor area worked well for the kids, with a chalkboard and some large stackable toys to keep them occupied. I ordered the Cuban Press, while the kids went with burgers. They also have a pretty extensive drink menu. We tried the margaritas, which were okay, although smaller than I expected. Unfortunately, the food took a very long time to come out, and a couple of things got lost along the way. They forgot our mozzarella and marinara appetizer as well as the broccoli salad I had ordered as my side. My Cuban Press was very good, although it's not a traditional Cuban sandwich since they use pulled pork. Authentic or not, I enjoyed the sandwich and the accompanying sauce. The kids were happy with their burgers as well. I didn't get a chance to try the shrimp bisque, but others in our group had it and reported that it was excellent. Overall, there were things we liked, particularly my sandwich and the outdoor area for the kids, but the very long food wait and forgotten items made the experience less enjoyable than it could have been. With a larger group of kids, it also wasn't necessarily the easiest place for us. We might come back without the kids and sit inside to enjoy the bar, or I'd consider grabbing a sandwich to-go in the future. The Cuban was good enough that I'd certainly eat it again.

We stopped in and I got the cheesesteak sandwich while my wife got the BLT. Both came within just a few minutes of ordering. The cheesesteak was hot, tasty, with roasted peppers and onions in a super-fresh baguette. The steak, itself, was chopped up and seasoned perfectly with a nice char on the edges. The sandwich was pretty darn good. It comes with a bag of housemade seasoned chips and a kosher spear. The chips need a little work; they were a little over seasoned and under fried. What I can tell you about the BLT is it's HUGE! A mountain of bacon between two slices of Texas toast with butter lettuce and fine, ripe tomatoes. I wish I'd ordered that because she couldn't finish all the bacon.... gasp! The service is very friendly and, as mentioned, fast. We were served, done and gone in less than 30 minutes. We ordered two deviled eggs and one came out without the bacon, which kind of set the tone for the rest of the meal. The Bloody Mary, which they're supposedly known for, is now a batch cocktail and you can absolutely tell. It lacked flavor, spice, and even basic seasoning. It also didn't come with the celery, bacon, or pickled onions that used to make it stand out. It was mid at best. The barbacoa tacos were also underwhelming. They weren't very filled and lacked flavor overall. Service unfortunately didn't help the experience either. We had to remind our waitress about the Big Reds that were supposed to come with the meal, and they didn't arrive until I was already halfway done eating. We also had to flag down another employee just to get steak knives for the people eating steak and eggs. Honestly, I won't be going back. It's pretty telling that a restaurant that used to be packed is now barely half full. The quality just doesn't seem to match the reputation anymore.
