Avoid this hotel at all costs for the service alone. Front desk, staff are incredibly rude. When checking you in. When we checked in, we had an ambassador elite member in our group who the reservation was under, and the front desk had several ambassador elite gift baskets lined up behind the checking counter. When we asked if we would be getting one of those, the front desk, staff rudely said no. There was no other information provided from the front desk staff member. When I asked where the fitness center was located, the front desk staff member said, "I already told you." he definitely did not tell us as no one in our group heard him mention that. Finally, we asked if our 7 PM Your24 request was still set. He mentioned that it was, but he would not provide a parking pass that extended through 7 PM. Instead, our parking pass still expires at noon on the day of checkout. The front desk staff also denied the welcome gift benefit, which is guaranteed in the Marriott terms and conditions. After that terrible experience, we went to the lounge on the penthouse floor. This was at 7 PM. Hors d'oeuvre supposed to be served until 7:30 PM, however, there was nothing there except for a few bags of potato chips and some brownies. If the hotel does not want to have hors d'oeuvres until 7:30 PM, they should change their hours to say only until 7 PM. Quite a disappointing experience. Parking is also terrible. They reserve all of the front, left, and right parking spots for valet, and the only parking available is at the very far end of the building at the back. Elevators are extremely slow as only two of the elevators are actually functioning. The rooms are OK. Not too bad, but somewhat small TVs. The bathrooms are also pretty outdated. As a longtime Marriott member, this is the first hotel which has genuinely earned a one star rating.

Lots of beautiful palm trees surround the property and the pool.

I spent 3 nights here while celebrating a sister's 50th birthday, so the 6 siblings booked 3 double rooms for 3 nights, and it was a really nice experience. My only recommendation: Don't book at room on the second floor above the awning that stretches along the side of the hotel that overlooks the pool. All 3 of our rooms were on the second floor right above a very, very loud and rattling awning! The first night, one sister couldn't sleep thinking there was something wrong with the building because the rumbling was so loud. We bought ear plugs for the rest of the visit and were able to sleep with fewer interruptions, but the wind make the awnings shake and made noise. But I was very surprised a higher-end hotel like this Marriott didn't have a solution to very noisy awnings that rattled all night! The outdoor pool and the outdoor bar overlooking the pool were my two favorite parts of this hotel. The water was warm and the sunshine was very welcome as it was a bit of a chilly early April in Charleston. The restaurant was fine for a hotel- the mushroom gnocchi and the potato truffle soup were both very nice. The lobby looks newly decorated and is large and filled with lots of places to sit and relax, watch TV if you wish. The outdoor patio is nice too, but so many smokers!! Folks were allowed to smoke on the patio, which I am not used to, so we didn't stay out there very long.

I recently presented at a conference held at this hotel. My husband and two small children (2 year old, 8 month old) we're traveling with me. From the moment we arrived, I could not have been more impressed with this hotel. The property is just beautiful. As soon as I walked through the door, I was greeted by warm and friendly staff. They offer valet parking, which is super convenient and not much more expensive than they daily parking rate. There is a restaurant on site. The food is delish and the staff again could not be more personable, and kind. The entire facility looks and smells clean, which is alway a major bonus. The location is great, and their amenities are awesome. In addition to a large patio near the pool with fire tables, there is a really neat roof top bar as well. Be aware the drinks are STRONG! We really enjoyed our stay. The only small thing that was difficult was not having a microwave in our room, however there is one in the lobby. I used it several times to warm bottles and never had any issues. 10/10 would stay here again.

    Dirty Starbucks windows.

Stayed here for a long holiday weekend. Parking was simple and close. Rooms are decent, although they provide VERY limited daily housekeeping. They do not dump the trash bins daily, which leaves your room with stinky trash for your entire stay. Only bed made and towels changed. The Starbucks in the lobby opened late daily with everyone standing around waiting. They put the trash bin directly into the counter where drinks are served. They also place a dirty floor anti-fatigue mat into the same counter. Meanwhile the barista is handling our drinks and kids while touching these dirty items from the floor. A decent hotel, but very dirty and lacking good service.

This hotel has BEDBUGS!!!. Room 1120 and room 1129. DO NOT STAY HERE!!! I was there for vacation last week. On the first day I got biten by bedbugs on my face and stomach. At first, I thought it was probably an allergic reaction to seafood so I just ignored the bites even though the itchiness was unbearable. The second night both of my feet and toes were so itchy in the middle of the night, I rubbed some hand sanitizer to calm the itchiness and went back to sleep. On the third night both of my hands and wrists were so itchy it woke me up at 2:38 A.M. I went to the bathroom and decided to turn on the lights and inspect the pillows. To my surprise, I saw the BEDBUGS crawling all over my pillows on ALL OF THE PILLOWS IN BOTH BEDS. I FELT GROSSED OUT and disappointed because I always stay at MARRIOTT HOTELS when traveling for work and for vacations and this situation regarding the hotel cleanliness is unacceptable. The hotel and rooms look clean on the outside or at first but they are obviously NOT! I am traumatized and don't want to travel anymore because of this experience. When I called the front desk at around 2:45 AM the night I saw the bugs (my third night) to report what I saw on my bed and pillows, Karen (front desk lady and another man that was also there) said they are booked and they doesn't know what to do to help at that time of the night. I got dressed and went downstairs to the front desk and showed Karen one of the dead bedbugs I killed with a napkin because I knew they wouldn't believe me. I also mentioned to Karen (front desk lady) that earlier that day, the housekeeping lady told me that this hotel had bedbugs in the past when I showed her my bites (I was in the room as the cleaning lady was putting new bedsheets that day) and I was in shock when I heard that but didn't do anything about it until I actually saw them with my own eyes. The housekeeping boss (Colombian woman) came to my room with a service man also that day to fix something with the AC and she told me to buy the spray "OFF" and put it on me so no bugs bite me in the future since according to her, my skin is so "sensitive" because "I'm white" after I told her about my bites. Jenny another women at the front desk told me I might be allergic to the detergent they use to wash their bedsheets when I showed her my bites. I have a feeling they all know this hotel is infested with bugs and they are trying very hard to hide it from their guests. Karen was upset at the fact one of the hotel employees had told me this hotel has a history of bedbugs. However, thankfully Karen was able to move me to a different hotel in the area at around 4AM and told me not to say ANYTHING as to why I was moving or the other hotel personnel wouldn't allow me to stay there because I might be bringing the bedbugs with me to the new hotel. This experience has been so bad and traumatizing I keep feeling itchiness all over my body. I find myself checking my own pillows and I don't know if I will ever trust another bed/pillows when staying at Marriott hotels. I travel a lot for work and I don't how to deal with this traumatizing event. I also want to mention that I am a lifetime Platinum Elite Member with Marriott. I expect better!

I am not sure if parking is free here cause I was not the one with the car this time so, let me know if you ever stay here and had to pa for parking. The place as we came in smelled like heaven!!! super great first impression, the decor is amazing! very light and classy, with large furniture and cozy atmosphere. The staff is pretty nice and attentive, there was one lady who was a bit slower than other staff members but she was also very pleasant overall. They do not have free breakfast here so make sure you have plans for there, however there is a Publix supermarket like literally across the street a 2 minute walk. The room was not super large but had a nice king sized bed and just as the rest of the hotel, nice and elegant decor. The bathroom as also not super spacious but great decor as well and I loved the fact that It was not a bath, it was a regular shower. This place is a convention center so the lobby is very large, lots going on but it is not crazy at all. The gym is brilliant with plenty machines and weights. The pool is very nice too! This hotel did not let me down, even though the rooms were not super large the experience was still pretty awesome.

My husband and I had a date weekend in Charleston and loved our stay here. We had a few events in their ballroom (they have a couple so multiple events can happen at once), with some catered meals. We had great sleep, and the rooms had great Bluetooth capabilities! We recommend checking this spot out.

Although it wasn't cabana season or warm enough to get into the pool, the cabana room was really nice and clean. I thought the room was just so cute and loved how the entire hotel was decorated. I was still able to enjoy a couple hours sitting out in the sun by the pool during my stay. They offered an hour of complimentary champagne in the late afternoon which was a nice touch. The hotel has a nice cafe and restaurant attached so you don't have to go far to find some food and coffee. I definitely recommend this hotel and enjoyed our brief time there.

The Mills House is one of the truly classic Charleston hotels. It has gone through a lot of owners in its history. It has been an independent property, a Hyatt, a Wyndham and has had many other flags. Hilton has renovated it a bit but kept most of its eccentricities. The location on Meeting Street not far from King can't be beat. The staff is friendly and helpful. The food and drink are the main restaurant and bar, the Iron Rose, are good. The negatives include the plumbing. On two of the three days we were there over Christmas, the water in the shower was just lukewarm, and the water pressure came and went. The other main negative is the cost of parking, $60 a night. That's a Manhattan price, not what you'd expect in a mid-size Southern city. Still, we like the atmosphere and the history, so we'll stick with five stars.

There were a lots of bars, restaurants and shops within walking distance. They boast about their butler service, which is pretty unique in the United States (akin to the resorts in Mexico and the Caribbean). We only stayed one night and did not make the most out of it. Our butler was very pleasant and offered detailed recommendations regarding restaurants in the area. The staff is welcoming and friendly. We arrived early and had to wait a few hours until our room was ready. That was a slight nuisance as it was a cold and rainy October weekend in Charleston. Luckily they had plenty of umbrellas for us to use. The welcome cocktails were a nice touch when we were finally able to check-in. Other nice touches include the complimentary drinks, candies and snacks that were already waiting in the room. The turndown service also included chocolate and a small sweet alcoholic drink / shot. Lastly, the included room service breakfast in the morning elevates the stay. A lot of good things. However, I thought the rooms themselves were just okay and a bit dated. Our friends stayed at a boutique hotel with vaulted ceilings and its own kitchenette for less money. Another disappointment was that we booked a room with a small outdoor courtyard, but were given a regular room. Given the weather, we probably wouldn't have used the outdoor space at all, but it would be good to get what you paid for. Overall very good service and location. They have a nice bar by the lobby that we did not make use of. The rooms themselves are just okay and on the small size. I would probably stay somewhere else next time I visit Charleston, even though I have nothing bad to say about The Spectator. Maybe my expectations were too high with a 4.8 / 5 average Yelp score. I just think there's better value elsewhere.

The nice amenities, decent gym and friendly staff are what creates the environment for a pleasant experience. Two of these were met and the friendly staff, was mostly there. . .but one sour apple truly changed the course of our stay. Even my wife, who worked once upon a time in hospitality at Kiawah Resort, was started by the interactions from The Loutrel Hotel staff member. Long story short. The daily complimentary breakfast was served. I accidentally went to place the granola lid on the yogurt, my wife told me that was the wrong lid and I went to correct. From across the room the breakfast attendant yelled, "sir that doesn't go there." Startled, I immediately removed it and placed it accordingly. I laughed it off. Moments later I went to sit my breakfast down where my drink was located. Same attendant, "you're not even sitting at the right table with your wife." Again, my error, but don't call me out twice in one morning. It's a small lobby, so many staff members overheard the interaction. Nothing was done by other management. The next morning, I walked down to look at breakfast. I saw the same attendant and said, good morning. She looked at me but wasn't pleasant in her response. Unlike the rest of her colleagues at the restaurant who are polite and kind, the same customer service I expect and provide to my customers. Breakfast offered salmon with some type of eggs or shellfish. I can't eat shellfish, allergic. So, I went to grab a biscuit at a local coffee shop and a coffee. We came back to the hotel and sat our food down. The same rude attendant came over, nudged my wife in her back and said, "you can't have this here, cross contamination." So, I left. Allowed my wife to eat her yogurt in the area. Funny enough, my wife asked where the utensils were, because every table had them. Same attendant rudely, pointed to another table for her to get them. I should have just sat down and ate my food as I didn't see any signs for "no outside food." Either way, stay somewhere else. It's unfortunate that a hotel like this allows such rudeness from a staff member. I did report this to the manager, and online but was met with more passivity. Comped two nights of valet. Honestly, it wasn't enough. I would never stay here again and it ended the trip on such a sour note.
