This will be a lengthy review and I understand some of my qualms may not be specifically related to this one branch. There are few circumstances that would compel me to write a review for a financial service institution, and I don't think I've yet experienced one that was so refreshingly smooth and competent that I've written a positive review for one yet, but this will be only my second negative one as well. My mom died a year back. Dealing with Wells Fargo was annoying but got sorted with only a few hiccups. AT&T, I thought nowhere could be worse than they were, jeez was it a hassle. But Charles Schwab has really shown me that you should not assume that there is any level of competence behind a veneer of professionalism. It's late last Summer, I receive an email about inheriting some assets from my late mother, and I see some forms that are a bit overwhelming. I schedule an appointment with the agent assigned to the case. They walk me through some of it, seems not too bad, and they tell me it's ok to leave some of the questions blank because they are optional. Some months go by while I am slightly neglectful and also trying to figure out how to fill out the rest of the forms to the best of my ability. I'm supposed to get it processed by the end of 2025 for tax purposes. I go into the local office around December 7th, and try to get it done with live assistance. I'm told that I need to open two different accounts to inherit assets from her two different accounts. However, for at least one of the accounts, I'm told I need to get written approval from my brother's company because they are also a financial institution. The compliance department at my brother's company says they got in touch with Schwab and I don't need this. I go back to Schwab and they tell me they still need this. I tell them I don't know wtf they want me to do, give me some form to get signed or something, I don't even know who to talk to because they can't just get written approval from my brother despite him being a managing partner in the company. My brother's company sends me an email confirming that I indeed should not need their approval, and I'd been told this had been relayed back to Schwab. Weeks pass as I'm assuming something is getting processed, so I go back to Schwab to verify something is happening, and of course they can't take an email as any kind of verification, but lo and behold, information pertaining to my brother's company was not the problem at all! It turns out the parts of the form that both the original telephone agent and the live agent told me do need to be filled out. I tell them what to put on the forms because I barely care at this point, I'm worried about getting screwed by the IRS because I'm late on something that was supposed to get done last year, and they can not tell me a word about dealing with this potential problem, which I've asked about three times. So then they tell me it'll be processed in 3-5 business days. Keep in mind that in the 2-3 weeks I was waiting before this, there was no word form them about what was going on. Now another 3 weeks pass as I'm waiting, and I go back in again today, because again, I've heard nothing from them so I have no idea what's going on! And yes, I do have the app and they have my email and phone from past communication. So I go in today, a guy I haven't talked to before is at the desk (my 6th visit, unless I'm forgetting one and maybe it's my 7th), and he's pretty confused, telling me some conflicting information from what I've heard before. I show him my case number and such, he's able to pull up the file, and he goes "Ohhh, this looks like a very complicated case, there's 5 pages of notes." Frankly I have no idea if this case is any more or any less complicated than any other inheritance case. I have one brother and my mom had two accounts. We inherited equal amounts and the accounts require separate distributions. Is that a really complicated case? I guess my case has been assigned to a "state agent," so we try to call them for a while. Turns out their business hours ended right about when I got there, at 3pm pacific because they're central time zone, which makes me wonder what "state agent" means if they're in a state across the country. I'm told that the problem might actually have something to do with getting some approval from my brother to get the money, which is total news to me and has never been alluded to before today. I don't know in what world I should need this, but that's what they said today, given the agent I was talking to was not the one in charge of my case. And hey, it woulda been great to get some update on this in the last three weeks too! I'm really lovin my routine of coming to Charles Schwab all the time, thank goodness for their free refreshments, I just look forward to sitting around and either being told they don't know what the problem is or that the problem is resolved and I just need to wait a few days when it's not. read more

Came here to see if I was able to get an advisor to convince me to switch to Charles Schwab and/or TDA with more money. After 35 minutes I got to sit with a TDA consultant whom did not give me his contact info but took mine down that would provide more information. Its been 2 months. Such a convenient location, and while it was temporarily closed during COVID, it's reopened and open for business. I do try to do most if not all my business on the Schwab app, but it's nice to have this place to go to for more immediate concerns or if there's a problem that needs the attention of a live person. The staff here has always been attentive and knowledgeable and very helpful. I'm a bit ambivalent about the fact that this location also tends to draw an older crowd of Schwab customers, and they invariably seem to be on a much more laid back timetable. So if there's more than one person in front of you, be prepared to wait. Just understand that it's not the staff's fault, and people who are coming in usually have an issue that they couldn't resolve over the phone or online, so their transaction is likely to take more time than usual. It's like going into the bank branch, which I also avoid unless absolutely necessary. read more

I don't understand why the branch exists. There is very little help they provide. For that matter I don't understand the Schwab business model anymore. They are excellent at churning out new products and services (Signature Services...) then they quietly go away. 90% of the time they tell you to go online to do the simple task you drove in to do. Today I'm here for a meeting for my job and were renting a conference room. There's like about 30 of us and only maybe 15 can fit at the table... Kinda not cool. I haven't seen any of the staff except the front desk guy and he was (I'm assuming) browsing the web and when I asked him where the meeting was for my job he was pointed his right arm "straight down to the left side" as he's looking down at his computer. The Schwab trading platform is down again today for the 3rd time this week. Their phone system has crashed for the 2nd time this week. Cannot enter any option or stock trades or reach anyone at their Chairman's team to process a trade. After doing extensive research, we decided to go with Charles Schwab. I walked into the San Mateo office yesterday to open an account. Chris helped me go through the paperwork, which was took approximately 20 minutes. He patiently waited for me to answer all the questions on the lap top and went over any questions I had. Not sure why some people are able to give Schwab this certificate and some are not. This could be a 1% thing as I am definitely the 99%. Nice office with street parking available out front and the lady at the front desk tried to help us. We wanted to convert the title of our account, and she gave us a really roundabout way that included opening a new account and transferring our assets. Her final remark was to call the client services number for assistance on the business card she handed us because she had to help the other customers in line. I don't understand all the negative reviews here about not getting a return phone call or lack of service. I was getting a little annoyed when my consultant kept calling, emailing and texting me. It was to the point where It felt like he was contacting me every other day. Looking back now, I should be grateful because it all started when I called the 800# with some simple questions. Next thing I know, the consultant from the local branch called me with a personal introduction, invited me into the office for some free services which I never took advantage of. I never did meet the consultant but I have been to this branch several times for different things and always had great service. The coffee/ candies in the front is a nice touch. I do have a TD and Etrade account but Schwab is definitely my favorite. read more

Well run office. Professional staff. It is always the case where you do not appreciate how good things are until you have a bad experience. I went to the SF downtown Schwab San Francisco office and was treated horribly. My transaction escalated because I was treated so poorly and given wrong information that the Manager of the branch needed to step in and apologize to how I was treated by his staff. Went later in week to Schwab's San Mateo office and was given correct information and talked through a difficult money transfer. Courteous and knowledgeable staff. Financial consultants here are not very good at this point. They only seem interested in new accounts and not helping with older accounts - just push you off to back office staff somewhere else. Look at another branch if you are interested in Schwab (good company, great pricing). read more

Michelle stepped in and helped us figure out some very confusing paperwork from another financial services agency. She went through the paperwork with us slowly , she went over all of our options got us set up and even when it was all over reached out to be sure we still feel confident about our choices. We have been Schwab clients for a long time and over the years we have always met kind responsible people who seemed to truly care about how we feel about our finances and making choices for our future. I very rarely complain about customer service and normally try to be understanding... It is a hard job. However, I just had to express my feelings about the horrible customer service I received here today. My husband is traveling and needed me to pick up a check for him to deposit into our other account. When he ordered the check he was told that all I needed to do was bring in a signed letter authorizing me to pick up the check and that it would not be a problem. I understand that they needed to confirm this with my husband with a phone call. Unfortunately, it was the way that Yvonne... the woman at the front desk handled the situation. She very rudely said she had to speak to my husband to verify... with such an attitude suggesting that I was trying to steal something. I told her if he didn't answer I would text him and have him call her back because I knew he was in meetings. Wow... that made her turn into a a real witch. Again, suggesting that I was a criminal said she had to call him from her phone. Of course, my husband was getting ready to present to a group of 500 people and was furious when I had to drag him away from his preparations to wait for a call from this woman. There are many other places that we can put our money for sure. I can't believe the stupidity... Charles Schwab should really train their employees better.
