Luke and Mark took care of us and were very friendly and informative. They recommended several other wineries to visit in the area.

This re-visit was the opposite - they were busy, but the best cellar doors have staff who can juggle multiple groups still making it feel intimate for each of them, instead of the churn them in, churn them out tasting we had. I don't think our server even said a word the whole time, just poured wine and walked away. Lucky the wine is good enough to smooth over an average cellar door experience though!

Of course Grant Burge is very good for Shiraz, The Barossa in general is big on this grape variety. We tried about 7 styles, generally at the end you are expected to buy a bottle, you would be crazy not to really unless you're on some sort of wine tour and you're stupidly drunk already. In particular I liked their single vineyard Riesling - Thorn, and their single vineyard SavBlanc - Kraft. I didn't buy any since they are distributed well in the US, although I doubt I'll get the single vineyard stuff outside Australia.

I was offered a variety of tasting options, but of course I went with the wine and chocolate pairing. Two of my favorite things. Yeah. The paired chocolates came from a local German chocolatier- Cuvée. It's mid morning so let's start with bubbles. 2021 Dry Rosé $20AU was accompanied by Bianco 35%. The very light Grenache had simply the perfect hint of strawberries. Delicate. With the white chocolate melting on your tongue, it was a devine strawberry and cream sensation. 2021 Garden of Eden Shiraz $25AU was paired with Soleo 42%. Had a slightly dry finish, light tannins, and my favorite mix of cherry and blackberry. The milk chocolate was still a rich flavor with a hint of caramel. 2019 Blockhead Shiraz Grenache $26AU with Amphora 65%. This wine was first released in 2017 and is designed to be drink now wine. Very food friendly. Plum and red berries with a spicy finish. Definitely needed the bold blend of this chocolate. Light fruit up front finishing with layers of natural acidity. 2020 Butchers Cart Shiraz $35AU accompanied Grand Cru 75%. This lush velvet wine had a hint of American Oak. Blackberry, plum, and black pepper. The chocolate had cherry and plum notes. I love dark chocolate, so this was my favorite. I will totally return they have SO many other Shiraz to taste my way through. On a beautiful day I recommend having your tasting on the patio.

Then again, I'm not much of an expert in the age of plants. The cellar door is rather small, but they do have a nice area outside where you can sit and enjoy some wine. In fact, the wine itself isn't all that bad either. While it is close to Tanunda, it is still a bit of a hike from the town, but then again you pretty much need a car to get anywhere in the Barossa.

It is such a heaving, complex beast, the winery, if you ever get a chance to check out the guts of one on your travels. Everything from planting, protecting, feeding and nurturing (I'm not kidding, Turkey Flat sprayed sunscreen on their vines last vintage! Who woulda thunk it!?) the vines, to the picking, producing, fermenting, bottling, marketing etc etc etc, there are a LOT of moving parts! And to try and understand them is why some people spend years at university learning the craft. However, most wineries won't give you all of their dirty little secrets (alright, some of them might, but they don't want to ruin their chance of a sale so it's unlikely!) that most of the winery workers know. Turkey Flat is the exception for me here. Not that there were any dirty little secrets to be told this time around, but the cellar door attendant, despite only doing 1 day a week, was extremely knowledgable about all of the wines and provided us with some great info on the various vintages, grapes and also general goings on in the area, following the Annual Barossa Vintage Festival which was held last weekend. Go check out the website for more info on the wines, and do yourself a favour and pop in here while you're up in the BV. It's a worthwhile experience and you will taste some truly magic wines.

I've been to wineries throughout Napa and the central coast in California and in other states. I'd rank Chateau Tanunda right alongside the best of those. It is a quaint little winery south of the famous Barossa Valley. Family owned and run by Janet and Ron Liebich for the past few decades, this clearly is held together by love spanning three generations and counting. Liebich Wein literally means "Love I Wine" in German for the trivia enthusiasts. Greeted by a French backpacker who is helping out the family, we were encouraged to try their wines and fortifieds while they put on the finishing touches to the lunch. The fortified wines I had was delicious, starting from young to old vintages. I learnt that you can come and purchase fortified in bulk for a very very reasonable price. For example, 1 litre of muscat is only $10.00, $7.50 for the Ruby Grenache. Wines starting from $15.00 a bottle! I can't believe how awesome this place is for value. Moving on to our lunch, we were ushered into their barrel room. We were surrounded by walls of wine barrels which gave an otherwise cold feel to this tin shed. The place was run very casually to the point where the adjective unorganised might pop up more than once. We found it amusing and charming. Foodwise, I had the pork and rabbit brawn, a falafel and a vego pattie, while the girls who ate meat had the lamb kibbi and beef and pork sausage roll. All was presented on a wooden platter with our flight of wines. It was all lovely, but didn't hit the spot on a cold spring afternoon. I guess we were hoping for more hearty offerings. Nevermind, the generous wines and tastings more than made up for it. We left slightly tipsey and me, with a rare bottle of semillion. Off to our next destination!
