Gans came over to do an assessment, cut a hole in the wall and then told us they'd charge $4k to replace a leaking pipe. Never agreed to any work and no work was completed but these guys sent a bill for hundreds of dollars for the assessment, which the woman who scheduled never specified there was any charge associated. The only work completed was their guy cutting our dry wall which took like 20 mins (have it on our Ring cameras). I ended up fixing the leak myself for $25 at Lowe's. Will never recommend these guys to anyone, as they're complete scam artists. read more

I was told I needed a new hot water heater because mine was "past its expiration" (~6 years). I paid $2,000 for a new unit and was STILL without hot water. After hours of waiting for it to "just heat up," another representative from this same company came out and informed me that this was an ELECTRICAL issue all along. He explained that I actually needed my home rewired and suggested that I hire an electrician. Spending a week without hot water during the winter is painful in itself. But being told that I had a whole new unit replaced for nothing? Extremely disappointing. I will not be using this company in the future, and I do not recommend their services to anyone. read more

As a homeowner there I some repairs you don't want to do. Plumbing heating and AC are on my list. I've lived in Havertown for many years and used Charlie's guys on several occasions. He's been in business for decades and does work in most of the nearby towns. He has an excellent reputation and often does work in the local businesses/churches/schools etc. I think of him as a medium sized business as he has 6 or 8 trucks on the road. To me this means he can respond fairly quickly to your needs. If you are in the Western Suburbs he's a great choice. read more

We live in an older house with no attic that we have been trying to keep cool with "ductless AC" units. We called one company and they said, spend more money for better ductless systems. Gans came out and really looked over the house and figured out a way to install a ducted system in a crawl space behind a closet. The system that they put in is fabulous. The house has never been so comfortable. We also really appreciated the guys who actually did the work. They were professional, thoughtful and extremely polite and friendly. When you have men in and out of your bedroom for a couple of days, it really makes a difference if they are top quality professionals. read more

We received a recommendation from our realtor to reach out to 'Murph' at Charles Gans when we moved into our home when we found the toilet was leaked. Right away, someone came out fixed the toilet and said we would need a new lever so he would order the same one and come back. Little did we know when we'd come back he would charge us $200 because of a 'labor charge minimum'. My husband even asked them to drop off the lever and have him install himself. They also replaced our lever with a MUCH cheaper and less quality lever. Charles Gans is taking no responsibility for them 1) replacing our toilet with the incorrect piece as well as 2) not explaining the charge and cost of all 3) no remorse or customer service. There are plenty of plumbers, this insane to be treated so poorly by a company. read more

My experience with Charles and this entire plumbing company was absolutely horrific! Not only did they not fix my plumbing issue they made it worse and over charged me on top of that. Here is a list is the time line of events: On Monday March 10th my sewer overflowed for the second time in less than 4 months. I called Charles B. Gans and they came out and informed me that they cleared the sewer line, however I was informed by the plumber who did this work that the line would overflow in the spring. This caused immediate suspicion here from me because I couldn't understand how this plumber would anticipate the sewer overflowing again in a few months, why didn't he fix the issue then so that this wouldn't happen again? This statement is significant because the sewer cap was off the sewer line and later found inside the sewer pipe. Gans then informed me that my payment was past due and and that I would have to pay the full amount before they would come out again. I then physically went to Gans office and made the payment of $450 so that he would come out and fix this issue on the morning of 3/11. At about 8:30AM on 3/11 Gans informed me that he would NOT come out and fix the plumbing issues saying that was I was "risk for payment" which makes no sense because I physically wrote a check the day before and drove to his office to deliver it. Needless to say for the next 2 days my family and I had to deal with an overflowing sewer lines, there was feces in the shower and dishwasher for 2 days, the conditions were horrific! I have a 94 year old mother I am taking care of and this was just a disaster, I luckily had my 2 sons at home to help me out. I was living in health hazard. After 2 days of this I decided to call another plumbing company, Horizon, since Gans was ignoring me, and I got a cost estimate of $129 to fix the job, whereas Gans was going to charge me $345. Horizon also informed me that the overflowing was caused by the sewer cap which was stuck in the sewer pipe which caused it to overflow again. This seemed strange since Gans knew that this was going to happen and had stated this to be during their consultation on March 10th. On 3/31 I received a threatening letter from Gans for legal action for payment for their services that actual caused the overflowing of my sewer line. I am shocked an disgusted by the lack of customer service, integrity and overall professionalism of the Gans plumbing company. Please DO NOT use this company, I would give them a negative star if I could. read more

First impressions mean a lot. I left a message with their answering service to discuss an emergency service call. I was told to expect a call shortly. By the time Gans called back nearly 12 hours later I had found another company able to help (actually, every other company called back within 10 minutes). The man who called back was very rude and then hung up when I thanked him for his call and let him know that I had found someone else. By the other reviews it seems like the work they do is good, but there are too many other options that do good work - and also choose to be polite. read more

Watch out for hidden fees! Charles B. Gans charged me a $350 "restocking" fee after I had to cancel a boiler installation. They never informed me of the possibility of any cancellation window or cancellation fee. Very disappointing after having used them for both heating and plumbing for multiple years. read more

Was in a bind after my bathtub drain failed. Charles Gans sent someone right out to assess the situation. My options were presented to me clearly and honestly. I made my choice as to the method and was given a ballpark estimate. Work was scheduled and began promptly, and finished on time. From the front desk people, to the estimator, to the scheduler, to the plumbers, Mike and Jose, the entire experience could not have been better. I left Mike and Jose alone in the house and they cleaned up after themselves, turned my lights out and locked my front door when they left. I'm sorry I wasn't home because I would've liked to have tipped them. It was a tough job in terms of having to work in cramped spaces, but they did it. I think I will send them each a $20 Wawa card. Needed a plumber for a water line for our refrigerator. From start to finish, this was a positive experience. The receptionist, scheduler worked to provide prompt service with attention to detail. I was informed that the job would cost $125 per hour. The job took 58 minutes but we were charged $156. The technician informed us that we were being charged from the time the dispatcher called to confirm the appointment even though she told us that they were finishing lunch and would come when they finished. When we asked why we were being charged for more than an hour, we were informed about the billing clock starting at the time of the dispatcher's call. The technician said that the extra 15 minutes was travel time. Be forewarned. read more

Then when I called to ask for their estimate the office had me wait for the technician to call and explain everything. 2 days later (after I'd had another plumber come for a second estimate) I got a call which didn't address several issues the other plumber found and cost the same, so I decided to go with someone else. 2 weeks later a bill for $100 shows up for their estimate. If we'd been told there was a charge I wouldn't have even bothered with a review, but getting an unexpected bill for a job that was never done because they were slow to contact us and offered an incomplete solution really stung. read more

Happy, happy, happy. We had a scary, hidden water leak on our two acre property that was complicated by a creek, a well, trees, a stone wall.... The Gans plumbing guys showed up within an hour of our call, helped us formulate a plan and worked with us step by step to resolve the leak. They were quick, thorough, polite, smart and fair (actually, generous might be a better word)-everything you are looking for when you go to a local business. We had used Gans for some other interior work a few weeks earlier which they had also handled quickly and professionally which is why we contacted them again when we needed help troubleshooting our high water bill. As it turned out, Gans sent this wonderful tech. who discovered the problem was with my connections to the clothes washing machine. They were timely, honest and qualified. My girlfriend and I scheduled an appt between 12pm-4pm for them to fix our heater when it unexpectedly stopped working. We requested that it be later in the day so they told us we would be the last stop. My gf took a half day off from work to be home by 2pm. By 415pm no one had showed up or called so I called them and was told that it was too late and no one could make it to our house. My gf then called to find out what had happened and spoke with the owner Mr. Gans. He was extremely rude, complained about how he got confused because we didn't have the same last name, he repeatedly addressed her as "lady" and never apologized for missing the appt. He said he had "pages and pages of appts" when she told him that we had a scheduled appt. He ended the conversation by saying "let's call it even, you go somewhere else" and hung up. Unfortunately, we still have no heat and it could have been fixed by now if we had originally gone with another company. The people who referred us to them are also taking their business elsewhere after this incident. Do not use them!! read more
