Julia I.

Decisions. Decisions. It's a tough one in Chargrill Charlies - wall to wall of finger lickin' chicken goodness. Burgers... home-style meals like roast chook, casseroles... curries... pasta... a smorgasbord of gourmet chicken salads... How would I like my chicken tonight? It's a fairly basic question, but boy is it a toughy? A kitchen full of keen staff hassling for your order adds even more pressure, so it pays to have a fair idea of what you're up for before entering. Oddly, the wall is blanketed with an impressive collection of photos starring celebrities inside this surprising megastar haunt. Take some time out from your big decision and check out the who's who of big name CC fans, which even includes Oprah. Go figure. Chicken wise, I usually go the tandoori salad. Once your agonising choice has been made, take chook purchase to nearest park and create instant picnic, or pull up a bar height pew in the breezy open window front and watch Queen Street saunter by. Whatever you do, don't leave your credit card here or they might stick it up on the wall and advertise "Is this your card?" Happened to a forgetful (and publicly humiliated), friend of mine.

It has recently undergone renovations but still in traditional theming. I've been many times and the Pho is amazing, very authentic. This time, however, I was with a colleague and her young son so we had child friendly food - fresh friend spring rolls, chicken with cashew nuts and mushrooms (the owner was kind to add vegetables for me for no extra cost), and crispy chicken, moist chicken with a crispy skin, side of oyster sauce and rice. All very tasty, very fresh and quickly served. Probably one of the best restaurants in Waverley. Not too expensive either.

It's small so definitely need to book for dinner, but usually fine to call a couple of hours in advance. Service is warm and attentive without being overwhelming. The decor is like walking into their family room, pictures on ledges, a lucky cat, magazine rack.. But don't be fooled - the food is fantastic. My top recommendations are definitely the pho (beef noodle soup with fresh herbs), whole deep fried fish with fish sauce, lemongrass, lemon and chili sauce, the fresh pork & prawn rolls and the chicken salad. But that's because we use it as our 'guilt-free' healthy dinner option (maybe except for the whole, fried fish, though it's surprisingly non-greasy). But the caramelised fish and the hot pots are lovely as well. BYO and take away are an added bonus. Try it and it'll become a staple!

Its pint sized interior is deceiving though, for there is nothing but big heart and ample options for a delicious feed on the hoof. Surely, there can be fewer nobler challenges than trying each and every signature Sabbaba pita roll over a period of time. Such is the allure for a falafel lover of the sight of 20 odd different types of falafels, each inspired by a place. The Tunisian is an absolute winner especially if you're a fan of chilli, sweet potato and babaganoush. Sabbaba Bondi Junction is welcoming, warm and maintains that slightly hip feel of its bigger Bondi Beach sibling. There is always a funky tune on the go and some friendly faces to help you out. It's the kind of place where you could easily lose a few hours reading a newspaper or playing a game of backgammon - if you manage to grab one of the few available seats. If it's just some great, good value takeaway food you're interested in, you'll have one of the best falafels in town in your hand in no time at all. Oh, and the coffee is great too.

The best nightclub on Bondi Rd…read more Total jokes you guys it's not a nightclub, it's like the biggest baddest most splendiferous chicken shop in existence, the chicken shop to end all chicken shops, and it just looks like a nightclub because there's people there all day and night, lone wolf singles and big groups and bros with snapbacks and girls in almost no clothes and a random guy in tux, why is there always a random guy in a tux. It's family run and the best deal going around is the $12 pick'n'mix, where you can choose any 4 things from the hot and cold food bar, including fish and salads and you have to get the shepherds salad, I'm ordering you, it's that good. Always get eat in because you get more food that way, they stack your plate high up like it's some kind of Food Jenga.

Then there's the chicken. Taste is a charcoal chicken shop with a difference - It's all grain-fed, natural, non bleached, chemical free, cage free chickens. You can buy a whole chook, half or quarter or get a scrummy chicken burger. There's also a host of other burgers and a selcetion of curry's, pastas, and noodle dishes as well. But for me it's all about the salads, there's noodle salads, cous cous saldas, pasta salads, tofu salads, greek, caesar, tuna, thai beef, chickpea, wonton and of course quite a few chicken salads. There's tables inside the store and outside on the street if you decide to eat-in.
