Great place to visit was only here once n would like to come back. Some customers seem kinna rude but the bartender was great....talked with his customers n had us try a shot of a mixed drink he put together. It was cool that a regular bought us a round of drinks. In Vallejo and happy to find this place for lunch. Refreshingly warm, no non sense bartender. There's a lunch special that's not as cheap as their website reads, but beer and self served filling lunch of soup, salad and meat/scalloped potatoes came to $12 and change. Cheap compared to what I expect in SF. There's a patio in the back. Sorta like being here during the week and it's full of regulars. No taps, but colorful big decor comes with your bottled beverage. Reminds me that dive tavern your grandparents took you to for Friday fish and your VFW uncle came along. I'll be back. Btw, remake of Meatloaf's 2 outta 3 ain't bad is playing on the jukebox. I'd give it 3.5 stars. For what it's worth in Vallejo, this is a good dive bar to go to for cheap drinks and also to hold a fundraiser (this probably only applies to Touro University on Mare Island). The only time I went was during a fundraiser event. They had an stage area where you can host something, a pool table, and they served spaghetti. I supposedly tried the spaghetti but I was not cognizant enough to remember how it tasted. Anyway, I might come back here if I really needed a drink. Then again, Vallejo is really not the place to be at if you're from out of town and you want to find a good dive bar. I'd recommend going to Oakland or SF. read more

I come here after work to enjoy a drink and a couple beers. Everyone who chooses the songs on the jukebox seems to know the crowd favorites. Kudos to them! Every time I come here its always late, and the bartenders are either Gary or Denise. I love them both! They are very professional bartenders, and come out back every once in a while to come hang out with the clientele. This is definitely a city favorite! read more

I'm from the South Bay and moved here bout 18 months ago. Found this place right before the move. Ran into the "day crew" of resident locals (Great bunch). They made me feel like i was at my old local in the South Bay. People: Friendly Drinks: Cheap (meaning low $) 2 Pool tables, Dart game, lots of seating inside, large out door area in back if you wanna hang outside, some games in back - Pac-man my favorite, Touch-Tunes and parking lot has video surveillance (in case ur worried about being in Vallejo j/k lol. ) Food available M-F around lunch time. Good food , nice salad bar & fresh local eggs available to purchase. Wife & I haven't gone back to store bought eggs since(super fresh/U taste the difference). Normal bar snack are available. Nation's is just down the street if u need to feed the beast. If you want a club scene, not the place for you :-P If you want a nice lil local dive bar with friendly people and feel safe, well then I'll see you there... read more

Characters is one the great old school VJO bars and for many years, When we moved to VJO in 1999, it was one of the many bars that offered the Monday night $10 steak dinners , which frankly was pretty good. There was many times where a group of us would go after to hang, drink some and have a blast, It's a classic old time neighborhood bar. It's been while since I've been. About, year ago I stopped by fo a quick drink,, yup they are inexpensive and generous. The decor hasn't changed a lick ,,, and that is kind of reassuring. OK. NOW for the BAD news. I stop in to decompress after a gig,,,have a great Vodka Martini and hang. Well the peace of mind did last long. The bartender who has worked there for years, i snow going off, yammering on and on about complaining, going off about the most rude, angry and vicious rants one could ever imaging. She's ranting to her friends, at the bar. It just got too much. The whole tone of the place,, now to 2 regulars sitting at the bar... and she blistering to them. It was so uncomfortable and TOXIC,,,, I couldn't take it anymore. To be honest it is a shame that a once legendary bar has become a yelling yard for the disgruntled. I had to peak up, I had to tell her she was way off base, Dang it's a great place, but with this kind of atmosphere,,,, it'll really hard to return... BTW I understand that a some one named "Phillips" ,, Mr Phillips ya really need to take control of,,,, she needs to be reigned in. read more

The bartender was very rude and stand-offish me and my friend felt very unwelcomed. The bar itself is very run down and dingy and they have no beer on tap. One star because I have to and the drinks are cheap but then again they are pouring from giant 1.75 liter bottles so I couldn't imagine them charging more. Will not be returning read more

The best dive bar I've ever been too. Bar staff is laid back, very interesting regulars. Pool tables and darts. Patio is nice in the warmer nights. Only thing for improvement would be beers on tap, currently only bottled beer is available. Whenever I'm in the mood to get wrecked, characters saloon is the spot in Vallejo. read more

Selection (4/5): They have a good variety of drinks but they don't have any beers on tap (kind of weird for a bar) Price (4.5/5): pretty cheap, the beers are only like $4 but there is a credit card swipe fee of a $1 The pool table works well and it's only .75 compared to a "broken" one at the Town House which is $1. Environment (2/5): It's usually empty and quiet, it's not exactly a party place. One time my boyfriend and I went and there was a single lady at the bar who put really sad songs on the jukebox; the jukebox also doesn't take card because the reader is broken. Bartenders/staff (1/5): Ooooh boy I got a lot to say about them. So my boyfriend and I mostly just come here to play pool because it's close by and it's cheap, but being in a bar you're kind of obligated to buy a beer if you wanna play, however just having to buy a beer makes me not want to come here, not because I don't like beer or the price is too expensive, but because of the god damn bartenders. ---Our first bartender just had a resting angry face and just seemed constantly mad. He got mad when I told him to put my lime on the side since I wasn't sure if I wanted it with my Pacifico. He got mad when we didn't have an open tab and he says aggressively, "every time I swipe I charge another dollar." And He got mad when he found out through my boyfriend that Viking metal was a thing, the conversation went like this "I listen to stuff like viking metal" which the bartender replies "viking metal isn't a thing" and my boyfriend replies "oooh yes it is" and they talk for a bit and the bartender says "oohk man, whatever." ---Our second bartender I can't say much about him because I didn't interact with him but my boyfriend did but it seemed that he got mad because I wasn't having a drink and we were only buying one (we just wanted to play pool). ---On the July 4th, I called them to see if they were open (since a lot of businesses are closed) and one of the staff members (don't know if they are a bartender or not) answered and I ask "are you guys open today" and she's like "uuuummm...yeah.." and I'm like "what time do you close?" and she replies "um, we close at 2, it's a bar." She made it sound so obvious that they were open at all and had normal business hours when it was a holiday! Overall (2.87/5): I honestly would only come back if I was in a really good mood and I really wanted to play pool, other than that, go to the new Napa Smith Brewery or the Town House, the bartenders/staff just ruined this place for me. read more

My fiancee was roofied here by a male bartender. She had one long island iced tea, and within 15 minutes, she was blacked out/unconscious. The male bartender was extremely weird, and I'm so glad I was there to take care of my fiancee, or god knows what would have happened to her. I love the old school New Orleans theme they have in the back. I also like this place way better than Jims, because at least when I leave Im not soaked in the smell of cigarrettes and regret. The bar tenders are also really sweet. They dont do anything fancy there with drinks they are really simple, but you have to remember this is vallejo. Its really chill there never too crowded and a perfect spot to meet up with friends, have some cheap drinks and play some pool. read more

If there was a below zero rating, it would be for this kind of place. My friend and I went to have 2 martinis and the bald headed bartender proceeded to make the drinks. When I asked him if he could shake it, he got agressive to say, he didnt need to serve us. Sorry, but if a bartender is dumb enough to argue with customers in an aggresive manner, he probably should be fired immediately. So, then he poured the martinis in a shot glass to say nobody serves martinis in a martini glass. Then he charged us $ 7.50 each for a martini in a shot glass. This is the kind of place that would probably prefer not to be listed on Yelp. It's a spacious bar with plenty of seating, but the patrons seemed to be the same faces every night. There's also a side room that's rarely used. Because I don't have cable TV, I went here for the Jazz/Lakers series a few weeks ago and every night I had the entire side room with a pjojection TV all to myself. There are no beers on tap here, just bottles. What's pretty cool is that they usually have some random food out that's free for the taking. One night it was hot dogs and another night it was garlic bread. The bartender was telling me that they serve food on Monday nights for a really good price. I love this place. The owners are incredibly nice and caring people. The service is great and the atmosphere is perfect unless you want to be at some "meat market" trying to hook-up. You can just relax and enjoy some good drinks, good people and good vibes. Some live entertainment and for those of you who like it, some Karaoke. Monday night steak dinners are awesome and a great value (give Debby a good tip!). There are a lot of regulars but they are genuinely good people. Enjoy, and say hi to Kimmie!!!!!
