Star of Greece - Boison Berry and Chocolate Ice Cream ftw!

While it is pretty casual inside the food is much more than you might expect from what looks like a shack on the beach. We enjoyed the fish of the day, grilled served with a few chips and salad. We also shared a tomato salad entree and some bread. Food was fresh, high quality and perfectly prepared. Portions were very reasonable - this is not a place where you need to order an appetizer instead of a main course to avoid over eating. Service was very warm and welcoming and you just can't beat the view. If you want to eat inside away from the heat, advance reservations are essential. Recommended.

The white building on the top of the cliff, known to us all as the Star of Greece…read more The Star of Greece is famed for its' view of the ocean, being perched right on the cliffs above Port Willunga Beach. It is also famous for its' seafood, and seasonal, local produce driven food and wine menu. Recently, the Star had a makeover which has resulted in even better views of the ocean from every table, and a contemporary, bright feel. Local art adds colour. Before perusing the Autumn menu, we opt for a glass of bubbles out on the deck, which you can also book to dine upon. Service is friendly, chatty but not obtrusive. We are kept informed and engaged in chat when there was a bit of a delay for our mains to come out, which was good customer service. Tables are set classically with white cloths, and a little bit of nature in the form of a potted succulent. Nice glassware for sparkling, whites and reds is offered. Chef sends with his compliments an amuse bouche of tiny smoked potato cubes, smoked mascarpone, and a lightly spiced potato crisp. A little mouthful of heaven smoky, crunchy, potato still al dente with bite, and not over seasoned with salt. Crumbed croquettes of 'brandade' or salt cod are served with fresh crab meat, potato mousse, smoked roe and sprinkled with spiced powders ($18). My MIL loved it! Mr Wino's special of the day ($16) was white anchovies presented in their own tin, with a garlic mayo and toasts. Gone in mere seconds! Pumpkin tofu ($16) is not a 'true' tofu as there is no soy in it. In fact, this is far better! You can taste the pure flavour of every ingredient. The tofu is silken and wobbling and rich with pure, savoury pumpkin flavour. Seed crisp is crunchy and studded with roasted pepitas. Savoury Japanese pumpkin is also served roasted over coals, with just a hint of sweetness. MIL opts for the Star of Greece classic, Kangaroo Island battered whiting, chunky hand cut chips, watermelon salad and sauce gribiche ($33). Pretty in pink, my house made fettuccine is stained with an earthy but not overly flavoursome pink beetroot sauce, sprinkled with toasted walnuts and adorned with a slice of heirloom yellow beetroot ($29). As pretty as it was, it was a little cold, and while I polished off the lot it wasn't as flavoursome as my pumpkin starter. Glorious greens. For an extra vitamin boost we also have a serving of the seasonal veggies, with truffle oil and roasted walnuts ($10), which is perfectly cooked, glossy and fragrant from the truffle oil. We were all happy to eat our greens! Afterwards or before, the beach beckons. A stroll along the orange cliffs with sand beneath your toes is very good for the soul, and for digestion!

Whether you are a keen cook, a reluctant chef, or a dinner-from-a-jar specialist, having a night…read moreoff is a relief. But when you are a veg*an, or keen on local or organic produce, your night off options are usually non-existent or too expensive. What luck then to have a treasure like home based catering business Studio Voodoo so close to home in paradise at Port Willunga. Anna & Matt from Studio Voodoo have a weekly 'foodie Friday' club, with a new menu released early each week on Facebook & via SMS. Orders are then taken via Facebook or SMS, and you then pick up your goodies on a Friday evening between 4pm and 8pm from their gorgeous eco-friendly house. Meals are served on crockery and trays which you return (washed of course!) for re-use so that Studio Voodoo is no waste. The food is all made from local, organic produce and is 100% vegan. There is often a raw dish or two, and gluten free options are clearly marked. Sometimes there is a weekly theme, and other weeks it is a round up of past favourites or new creations. The menus are so tempting, making a choice can be really hard - so there is also a weekly "Share Plate" with small portions of most of the things on the weekly menu, plus extras, enough to feed two people for $30. The share plates always feature freshly home baked Turkish bread sprinkled with sesame, or garlic Turkish. The delicious beetroot hommus also makes regular appearances, perfect for dunking the Turkish bread into! All of the salads are fresh, crunchy and flavoursome. The signature salad has herb, spinach & rocket mix with roast pumpkin, pomegranate, pecans, dates and delicious savoury chickpeas, with dressing on the side for you to add. Studio Voodoo always keep experimenting and coming up with tempting new dishes, like too-cute vegan sliders that came with one of the share plates in January. Also popular are the home made pastas. Stuffed with an ever changing array of house made flavours, including vegan cheese and artichoke with rocket pesto, pistachio and olive tapenade. Now that Autumn is here, abundant root veggies and figs find their way into the menu. Last week the share plate featured a fresh fig & pistachio salad, mushroom pate (with agar jelly!), zuchinni fritters with saffron aoli, bejeweled Mexican rice, and a cheesy artichoke tart with artichoke & pumpkin, plus cute edible flower decoration. The chocolate & beetroot cake with choc-cardamon ganache was particularly delicious and a steal at $8 with plenty for two sweet tooths to enjoy. When they are offered, grab some of the choc-maple ice cream cookie sandwiches too! For more drool inducing pictures and menus check out their Facebook page. Studio Voodoo is an affordable and healthy weekly service with restaurant quality meals. See you there Friday!

At last I can stop driving as far away as Port Elliott to get a pie of taste and quality!…read moreI love this bakery and it opened in December 2011 at a time when first moved to SA and lived close by in Seaford. Toff, Cara and the staff at the Home Grain Bakery have perfected the art of the perfect pie! During my time in Adelaide I must have sampled nearly every "Pie of the Month" and my usual favourite "Beef and Green Peppercorn" which has won the best pie award on numerous occasions. This is my favourite as it is simply delicious. I have never had a chunkier pie! Please open a pie shop in Sydney - as I know you'd do well. I also frequented usually on Saturday mornings so that I could sample the breakfast pie range as well. If I wanted a the 'Bacon Brekky Pie', I needed to be down at the bakery early, because they usually sell out by mid morning. If this pie sells out don't fret because there is usually a Spinach and Mushroom Pie still available. Both breakfast pies are the best I have ever tasted and so much better than a quiche! In addition there are many Vegetarian pie/ pastie options. If you'd like to be temped with some sweet choices - there are lots of Jam Berliners, Finger Buns, Vanilla Slices (Yum), Beerenberg Kitchener Bun,Croissants and donuts. Freshly baked bread loaves are also displayed in the bakery window. Too much choice to choose from. I complement my meals with locally roasted Villere coffee made on the Ruggero Espresso machine. The best coffee 'Down South'! All coffees are served with a little moon shortbread made exclusively by Margaret -Toff's Nan- for the bakery. These should also be packaged for sale as they are delicious. Every time I visit Adelaide - I have to come back for one of Home Grain Bakery's Pies.

The fingerbun was overpowered by the icing. The staff member I dealt with was unsure of which items were vegan. Despite this I am planning to return in a few weeks to try one of their famous vegan vanilla slices!

Good curry is fantastic, but good curry at the right price is a a beast as elusive as the unicorn…read more Most neighbourhood Indian restaurants these days are bloated with too much cream, sugar and same-saminess. Imagine my surprise at finding good curry, at honest prices in a combined curry & fish & chippery opposite the stunning Aldinga beach cliffs. The cafe is clean & bright with a welcoming vibe. Tables are neatly set and floor to ceiling windows face the Esplanade. Friendly service includes a basket of poppadoms warm & crisp to keep the hunger pangs at bay while waiting for your chosen goodies. Sandy feet are welcome, like the boys by the window making short work of a newspaper parcel full of minimum chips. Soon we are brought with a smile a groaning-full & heavy bag of neatly wrapped foil bag parcels and large containers with change from $30. The hardest part is smelling the spicy aromas as we trundle the few kilometres along the Esplanade to enjoy our feast on sparkling Port Willunga beach. The rich, cheesy & spicy tandoori-flavoured 'Vindaloo naan' is indulgent. Curry puffs are handmade and unique thanks to the black pepper sprinkle on the outside and mint chutney for dipping. Ditto the fresh vege korma with bright hits of cardamon, medium chili bite, and sauce of ground cashew. Rich dal makhani mopped up with wholemeal roti and saffron rice work too. For a cheap as chips curry feast in a priceless location - it's Aldinga Bay Cafe for the win!
