I was just there and we had a drink and left. The wait staff seemed more interested in interacting with each other than with guests. I watched 3 complete tables walk in sit down wait and then leave without a single staff person approach and explain the menu or ordering. The bar service was good but it is self serve. And she was the only person I observed during the time I was there who appeared to be actually customer focused. I hope the management team takes this feedback to work on the customer experience and realize that signage and personal customer contact is important to the tourist industry. read more

Went here during a golf tournament, coolish night but the staff were quick with the blankets to keep the legs warm. Beer on tap was local and delish, pizza was piping hot and delivered and the local musician playing was an absolute star! read more

We both had the bacon cheeseburger. Yum!! I loved the flavor or the "char" on the burger. I could taste each individual ingredient of bacon, cheese, pickles, and the sauce. Sometimes flavors blend together but this burger had distinct flavors that stood out. The fries had a special salt on them and they were hot out of the fryer. I didn't cover up the taste with ketchup as I appreciated the potato taste and texture, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Loved the ambience. Light music and relaxing decor. read more

I love the minimalistic way that NB prepares their lobster rolls. Honestly, I never understood the hype until I had a true NB/Maine lobster... and Char and Chowder served me my first. Wow, I finally experienced the ocean sweetness and umami that everyone else talked about. The seafood chowder was on the thin side (and I'm thick chowder kind of gal) but all the flavors were there and my picky eater parents approved. This spot was recommended by the owner at Niger Reef Tea House, another locally rated 5 star establishment. The service here was very good and the food was excellent. When I requested no bun with my chicken sandwich and just the side greens, the server didn't flinch. No questions asked, my sandwich became a garden salad with grilled chicken thighs. I appreciated the flexibility of the staff. It made for a great, light dinner. The lobster roll was very respectable - light mayo sauce with just the right amount of celery, dill, etc. The House Salad was great with a good amount of toppings including nuts, berries and crumbled cheese. My hubby's steak and fries was good. Fries were hot and crisp the steak was more to the medium side but good. All in all we enjoyed the casual dinner experience. My family and I were walking through downtown and stumbled on Char and Chowder because of the beautiful building and decor. The food was incredible. I had the lobster roll and my family had the wood-fire pizza, the hamburger, and the smoked salmon. Everyone ate it all, including the kids. Pretty typical tourist fare. I wouldn't order the steak and fries again; the meat was dry, overcooked, and tasteless, with a very perfunctory drizzle of chimichurri on top. The beer was good and the space was nice, but it was just another mediocre meal in the tourist grind. read more

We went twice during our stay in St. Andrews..by far and away the best seafood chowder I have ever had! A real palate pleaser.. ambience is rustic with a cool vibe...and the staff and bartender very helpful and pleasant. Such a cute place and I'm glad that we stumbled upon it while looking for lunch. Food was just okay (we got pork tacos, a lobster roll, and hamburgers) but the ambiance of this beautifully done outdoor dining area and the ice cold beer more than made up for it. I'd visit again but maybe just get a snack for food or try something else rather than what we ordered. read more
