What a fun community diner! We were in St Stephen for a day trip from Maine and the diner had good reviews so we went for lunch. Our waitress was so nice, and we ended up talking to people at the two booths near us who gave us recommendations for where to visit. Food was great - we got a large poutine, BLT, and toasted club, with a huge slice of lemon meringue pie for desert. It's your typical diner layout - booths along the wall with a bar near the kitchen area. They also have a side area with booths, which is where we were. I had seen a review that mentioned individual jukeboxes but we didn't get a booth with one. That was okay, though, since we spent so much time talking g to the folks in the booths next to ours. Blueberry Pancakes!! When you look at the menu, your option is that you can only order 1 pancake. I was shocked ... until it arrived. The pancake is HUGE - it's almost bigger than the plate. The staff was friendly, but the food was bland and needed seasoning and lacked flavor. My mother ordered the highly recommended seafood chowder... although it did have a lot of ingredients in it, it was lacking in seasoning. I ordered the fish and chips which was also bland, and the coleslaw side that came with it came in a small paper cup that is usually used for serving ketchup. Not impressed at all... maybe we should have stuck with what this place is "known" for- their burgers. read more

After reading the menu, I was looking forward to trying the creamed lobster-over toast. However, they ran out of lobster and thus, I settled for the pork sandwich with gravy and fries. And, I must say it wasn't bad at all. Add to that a very clean restaurant and amicable/friendly waitresses (who are also the owners), and you have a winner. Carman's Diner is popular with the locals (at least that's what the locals we met told us), and it proved a nice place to grab a casual dinner. It's family-owned and has a very friendly staff; even though we were certainly strangers, we got a very cordial greeting and quick service. The menu is diner-like with lots of choices, and we went with seafood (scallops) and club sandwich. Both were good, and so were the ice cream floats we ordered for dessert. (Our waitress wasn't sure how to make one, but with our directions she did a very good job.) We know little of other dining choices in the area, but we'd have no problems returning here and wanted to alert Yelpers to its existence. read more

Go anywhere else! Earlier this month, we spent a few days out near beautiful Oak Bay. Whenever we rolled into town, there were many cars around this restaurant so we thought we'd give it a try. What a mistake! We came during lunch... it was busy but the owner/manager barely acknowledged us. She seemed to look at us, then at several dirty tables, and then do nothing to get us seated. After several minutes I took it upon myself to clear the table and she hurried over saying she was about to do that "any sec." It pretty much went downhill from there. It took 40 minutes to get a mediocre and expensive lunch. The waitress was friendly - we appreciated that! The highlight was we got to leave. I'd skip this place for anything else you can find in town. read more

What a sweet little find! The ladies running the place were so friendly and service was fast. Husband had the fresh roast beef, mashed potatoes with gravy, and carrots. Besides wanting a little salt added to the veggies, he loved it. I ordered the toasted club with fries- it was SO, so good. They use fresh cooked-in-house turkey and it was amazing. Traveling with toddlers can be stressful at times, but Carman's was so inviting and welcoming to our 1- and 3-year olds. One had turkey with corn & mashed potatoes, the other had a burger. Both enjoyed their meals. Be sure to pop across the street for a fun souvenir pic in the large sign with character head cutouts! :-) read more

Classic diner atmosphere. You'll want to order a milkshake. Exceptionally friendly service. When I was there, a couple was there celebrating their 47th anniversary. They'd eaten there the day they got married and have been back every year since. Another couple paid for their meal. It's that kind of place. Homey. Like going back in time. Totally revolting. Carman's is a no-go. Floppy fish-n'-chips. Fishy fries. Tim Horton's is offering a better meal at a tenth the price.

This place is always open, a beacon in the night for years and years. Quality food at an affordable price. With great service. It's a quaint diner but the hot sandwiches are spot on and there's free refills on your tea. I will definitely keep coming back. read more

Very friendly service. I had the T-bone steak and it was easily the worst steak I have ever had. I ordered it medium done and it was clearly more than well done. It was very thin, chewy and had no flavour. My father in law had the same and agreed. The other people in my party had sea food and club sandwiches and enjoyed their meals. Turkey salad plate (dark turkey) was huge; couldn't eat it all. Very good fish chowder. Wife had a plain old hamburger and side salad which she said were good. Prices were fair. Diner was crowded, many folks had to wait for a table to be vacated (Friday evening, too, which are very busy eating-out nights). Back room was closed; obviously short staffed. Took forever to get our order, hence the 3 star. Seems like every customer knew the other one. Would eat there again if I thought the service would be faster. read more
