"The last architect you need to talk to if you're remodeling": that was how we came to work with Walter on our remodel projects, from a couple we know who were very experienced and discerning in remodeling in the Bay Area, and who'd worked on other projects prior to working with Walter. And I'd say the same thing about Walter after working with him on a few projects over the years. From my experience working with other architects (both brand new construction and remodeling, all in the Bay Area) over 2 decades, remodeling requires a special skill set on architects, and not all can do it with the same skills and competence as Walter (many are great in designing brand new ones). And Walter excels at both (as I've seen brand new designs by Walter in our City as well). To name a few areas: Walter is very good at imagining the flow of the house' interior, therefore after construction, no one can tell it's a remodel! And he's very versatile in his design styles: traditional, rustic, contemporary, etc., as I've seen examples of them in our City. He also has an office crew that are excellent, from scheduling design discussions, to drafting, etc., so that things are always on track. read more

I have done 5 projects with Chapman Design Associates, all of which worked out excellently. Two remodels, which resulted in better, more functional homes. Two single family homes which are loved by their homeowners. A multifamily condominium project, where the owners are very pleased. Walter and staff are easy to work with and very responsive. Couldn't ask for a better eexperience. read more

Zero stars. I'm so disappointed! We bought a house for which Walter had previously drawn up plans, and we were hoping to buy the dwg files from him. First, it took multiple attempts to reach him, but when he understood he could make money off of us, he decided to call back. Instead of asking what we were looking for, he launched into design plans which were unrealistic for our needs- both in design and budget. He never asked our goals, budget, or timeline. Explaining that his plan was beyond our scope, budget and timeline, he refused to respond to any communication and instructed his assistant to do the same. Here's the funny part. He had already been paid fully for his design work. We wanted like to pay him MORE money for the design files (dwg) but his ego and childish communication is losing him free money. Communication skills and upstanding business practices are key to working with a designer. I do not recommend Walter Chapmen. read more

We were remodelling our kitchen and we hired CDA to help us figure out how to make it the kitchen of our dreams. Although it was a smallish project, we felt like an important customer. Walter is an out of the box thinker and a great listener. By asking good questions about how we lived and what we wanted, he came up with some suggestions we would never have thought about--and it turned our kitchen from something really nice to a room that meets the needs of our family exactly. A few years ago we decided to move to Los Altos from Burlingame and fell in love with a beautiful garden. Problem with love is that you're blind to the other aspects - like the house itself. That's where Walter and his team came in - they truly transformed our 1950s ranch into a phenomenal home. The CDA design approach, to sit with clients and immediately visualize design concepts, was amazing. Not the great cathedral in the sky design approach of many architects where it's their design and you're an observer. Walter and team were also able to think outside the box and reuse the bones of a house well. They were responsive, great design team, worked well with the city and at a reasonable cost - far less than build new. Our remodel included a new basement, outdoor covered porch and complete remodel from stud level of ~4000 sqft. read more

We have been working with Chapman Design Associates on an addition + remodel over the past several months. This is a terrific team to work with. Very friendly. Very detailed. Always prompt. We never had one problem and they always made sure that the whole experience went smoothly. We have enjoyed all the sessions we have spent with Walter. We bought an existing 80 + yr old house near downtown LosAltos , after living there for 4 months , and trying to make the home more livable , we decided to replace the whole house with a whole new house . The project had several tough constrains including 2 very large heritage oaks , a small lot and an eclectic mix of neighborhood architecture . We interviewed Walter Chapman along with some local architects , Walter was able to quickly understand what we wanted and gave us a detailed outline of what we were looking at both on a time schedule and our estimated costs for the project We met weekly with Walter , and developed the plan in small bites which gave us time to understand how the new home would look and feel , At the end of the process Walter was able to deliver detailed plans which allowed us to get our permits with the city Over the years Walter has developed an excellent team both in his office and also among the engineers and other professionals needed to get the work product delivered . The project was an education for us , and we learned that a methodical approach was the best way to get this work completed , meeting weekly gave Walter time to communicate with us and come up with a good final plan . read more

We've been working with Chapman Design Associates for over a year on a custom residential project in Los Altos. It's a very challenging job with unique sustainability AND healthy building requirements. We've found their team professional, flexible, and very creative and effective at combining these unique owner goals into a lovely and practical home. My wife and I have used CDA for multiple major remodels and, ultimately, for the design of a new home from scratch. Walter alwasy brings a lot of creativity and also listents to our goals and inputs. This is an unusual and important balance that many do not possess. Walter is also very good at helping us to visualize options and at brainstorming togehter with clients to achieve the best possible designs. Meet the Business Owner: Walter C.

Having grown up in San Jose in the 1960's, Housing subdivisions and concrete drainage swales were quickly replacing the fruit orchards and creeks we played in as children and I was fascinated by the construction of the new homes popping up all around us. I did not know then the influence that both of these memories would have on my life and future career. The very first home to be constructed was from one of my designs when I was seventeen and still in high school. It stands today near the Santa Cruz yacht harbor. While supporting myself by preparing designs and plans for a local developer, it became apparent that the degree was only one means to an end, that I could pursue and realize my dream of designing homes simply by learning and applying the trade. As circumstances would have it, people recognized my talent. Soon I was on my way to establishing the practice that I have now enjoyed for thirty years.

(They also offer realty and construction services.) We interviewed another firm before finding Open Remodel on Yelp. The other company's price estimate for architectural plans kept going up and up. It was like they were feeling us out for how much we could pay. It was a huge red flag. We are willing to pay a fair price but we don't want to be taken advantage of. The quote we received from Ashish (one of the owners of Open Remodel) was fair and in line with what we'd budgeted. The Open Remodel architect Ashish assigned us to, Ron, was also very pleasant to work with. He not only listened to our vision but also had great suggestions, including putting a window into the kitchen. I will be a great way to break up what would otherwise be a full wall of cabinets. We'll be able to make that area into a bar (or coffee bar)--exciting. Our project was unusual because Open Remodel finished our plans just as the pandemic was starting. We put our project on hold during shelter-in-place and for a few months after that. When we finally submitted the plans to the city, Ashish was true to his word, not charging us to revise the drawings for changes the city asked for. In fact the planning department didn't have any changes other than wanting a clause added to the plans. You are in good hands when you work with Open Remodel.

We aimed to generate income by converting the former primary bedroom into a rentable, attached JADU. This mean building a new primary BR on the back, downhill side of the house, along with creating a new family room, and office. The front of the house was definitely old style, and did not, in any way, match our vision of a contemporary, hi-tech, look. I had interviewed other architects who had suggested we add a new front foyer, but I wasn't thrilled about the look presented, which was basically to add a gable roof addition ("A" frame shape add-on) at at the front, that would be harmonious with the rest of the house. In my first meeting with Davide, he suggested something that changed the whole dynamic of the house. He suggested that rather than be constrained by trying to harmonize the new entry with the old architecture, we could add a new layer to the front of the house, and change the look completely. This also creates a new corridor at the front that greatly improves the flow/circulation from the front to the back. It was a genius idea! This new layer at the front of the house gives us a spectacular new front entrance, plus a new corridor with tall ceilings. He also very skillfully raised the ceiling heights in many parts of the house so it feels like the rooms were expanded (when only the height changed). I am attaching a photo of the original house and Davide's concept for the new design. I want to add that we are not demolishing any part of the old house so we are not losing any existing square footage. We are just adding and "splicing the old with the new". For the new room additions at the back, he integrated the complex siting of the hillside PBR & family room to flow seamlessly into the same level of the existing house on. I have very strong ideas of what I want in terms of design, and Davide has been very patient in working through my ideas. He uses his critical eye and design experience to guide me so I don't get off track, and we can get to where it is I want to end up. We are now in the building permit process, and I can't wait for construction to start. I will be updating this post when the house is finished with more photos, because I want to show off the dramatic transformation between the "before" and "after". If you are looking for a miracle transformation, Davide Gianella is the architect who can make this dream come true for you! I can recommend him 100%

From the beginning, Giovanni was very good about communicating the process he recommended based on the state of our siding and was responsive through the end of the project. Their team sanded and stained all of the cedar at a fair price. And unlike other companies, they didn't pressure me to get the cedar restained more frequently than needed. If I had one minor suggestion, it would be to ask the staff to be careful around my plants, but honestly I would rate the job 9.9/10. When the color didn't turn out how I expected, the owner wrote me a long explanation for why he used a particular stain and the issues with my old stain. I really appreciated the explanation and that his team did a more labor intensive process (sanding all of the cedar siding) than other quotes I received. Several months later, they also went out of their way to get back to me on the stain they used because I want to stain my gates the same color. When the time comes again to restain our cedar, I'll definitely be giving Giovanni and Richard a call. Their customer service is top notch!

They had changed their email server and so lost all the past correspondence and thus apologized and re-engaged. We eventually set up a date and all seemed good. Well, that date came up and went. I called, texted and emailed that morning and day and have not heard a word from them still. It's been 10+ days, which feels overly generous as I don't tend to write negative reviews. However to safe you time and energy, engage at your own risk. If people tell you they are being ghosted, believe them.

After talking to a few different firms, Kanika Design just felt like the right fit. Kanika really listened to what we wanted. I've always been a bit nervous about using bold colors, but she pushed us (in a good way!) for a deeper color palette in the main living areas. It looks incredible. Kanika found us so many unique, high-quality furniture pieces that you just won't find at a big-box store. The biggest thing for us was logistics. Once the design process completed, their team handled everything - architectural, permit headache, and construction. Anyone who has done a remodel knows things never go 100% perfectly, but whenever an issue popped up, they were on top of it immediately. They kept the contractors moving and kept us updated on the budget and what was happening next. It's a relief to finally be done after 2 years and have a home that feels like us but way better. I can't recommend Kanika and her team enough. We're still obsessed with how everything turned out.

Really pleased with how everything turned out! From the start, Zion's quote was more detailed than other contractors we talked to, which gave us a lot of confidence that they truly understood the work involved. The team also worked really well alongside our other third-party contractors and designer, making the whole process feel coordinated and smooth. One thing we really appreciated was how they handled changes along the way. When our requirements shifted, they adapted easily and offered great feedback on ways to simplify our design to save time and money. The team showed up on time each morning, cleaned up before leaving every day, and were always respectful and courteous. They made a point to ask questions and check in to make sure everything was being done to our satisfaction. Their attention to detail showed in the finishing touches, and whenever something wasn't quite right, they were more than willing to fix it. The project finished on schedule and mostly on budget.
