Henfield Antiques and Homes is a shop dedicated to antiques for the sake of ornament and decor…read more This isn't the kind of place to go looking for a 16th century grandfather clock or a Chippendale side table but for those of us who enjoy dressing our houses out in the Victorian rural style this is just the kind of scullery maid's den that we need to inspire us. It goes without saying that a place like this, in Henfield is going to be fairly pricey, but run by such a helpful lady and with such well thought out displays and stock the prices actually start to seem reasonable. While I was there browsing the selection of stripped wooden dressers, bathed as they always seem to be in a gold or perhaps biscuit coloured light, I came upon a set of wooden chests that could easily make for the centre point of any room. I cautiously turned the price tag to find that they were on sale at comparatively cheap sixty five pounds. That's not where the reasonable and entirely functional finds stop either, they also sell old table cloths and bed linen on a set of shelves at the back of the store for about eight pounds a set. In fact in terms of this place being useful I don't think you really have to even buy an actual physical item from here. The place itself can serve as an inspiration and with such a pleasant lady running the place I get the feeling that advice and guidance are available from Henfield Antiques in vast quantities.

Brighton and Lewes are both rich in these kind of establishments, but I personally feel that Lewes…read moredoes the antiques and oddities side of things so well. This place is a great case in point. The lay out and the feel of the Flea market are as you would expect, stalls and cabinets dividing up a larger space within a splendid Victorian building. Much like Snooper's Paradise or any other flea market. What I think sets this place apart is the stock they seem to keep and the prices that they sell said stock for. There's a brilliant selection not just of retro tat, but fascinating antiques most of which are on sale for the kind of money that any sensible post graduate with a little flare and taste could afford. The staff seems a little mad too, in a good way, rather than quietly shuffling around as you would expect in a standard antiques shop they talk loudly and whiter away about their social life in a way that makes you feel that you can spend a good hour or so here simply to brows. This works very much to their advantage in my opinion as I now know where to turn for any difficult birthdays or Christmases. All in all, if you're enjoying a day wandering about in Lewes or if you are just in town and have the time, this place is definitely worth a visit.

Lewes Antiques Centre is definitely one of the former. Focussing more on the small household wares and accessories this place has a good selection of glass cabinets filled with all manner of interesting trinkets from the past. It's a little like when you're young and you sneak off to go through the dining room drawers at your grandparents' place on Sundays. While the prices and the stock in here are great the vibe of the place seems to be really odd, had I gone in on my own I would have almost certainly left within a minute or so. The reason for this is that the people who were apparently the staff seemed generally unpleasant huffing and puffing every time I was remotely in their way rather than simply saying excuse me. Then there was the constant whispering. Nothing is going to set a potential customer less at their ease than the sound of hushed voices from behind the counter whilst they are trying to browse. If you can get past that though then I have to say this would be one of the best places going to pick up the finishing touches to a 1930s fancy dress outfit.
