Sooo I'm a die hard Chandos fan! I was so happy to hear they re-opened some of the locations. However I'm a bit disappointed in the taste of the food. It was ok but not the best like it used to be. Looked the same, fresh ingredients but for some reason it's lacking flavor. I'm pretty sad about that! This is the OG Chando's location, it used to be one of my favorite spots. Their carne asada was top-tier. Since they've expanded to new locations, I feel the quality has dipped a bit. It's still good, just not quite as tender or flavorful as it used to be. Today, I had the carne asada burrito, and my wife got the carne asada tacos. I still enjoyed it, but I'm still a bit nostalgic for that OG taste. Service is good, they have friendly staff. Just a heads-up for those who haven't been there before, you order outside at the window. On hot days, if there's a line, it can be a bit rough. Luckily, there was no line when I went today. Ordered a Cali burrito 14.13$ no add ons. This is the burrito I got. Almost like just half the burrito, super small. Size of a taco bell burrito. I really wanted to love this place but unfortunately it wasn't for me. None of the meats were great and I tried all I tried all of them. The tortilla kept sticking to parchment paper and's as soon as I tried to eat the taco it completely fell apart. At the end of the meal, I was completely sad because I had not enjoyed any of it. It's been a while since I've been to this location and ordered from here, probably over two years and some change now but I recently just went here again for a quick lunch and ordered what I knew I liked which was their carne asada tacos. This time it just seemed different. It was good but definitely not as good I remembered it. I'm not sure if they use a different cut of meat and/or if they slightly tweaked their marinade but the meat was tough, bigger chunks, fatty, and , the flavor was very mild. I remember the meat use to have a nice Smokey char on it, and the flavor from the marinade really stood out and was slice perfectly thin. It was definitely lacking this time. LOVE THE FOOD!! I'm a HUGE Mexican foodie and this place always has great food. The asada tacos are my favorite and I've tried nearly all of them so definitely recommend these over the other options. I tried three of their tamales and I would suggest having the rajas con queso and the pork tamales but the chicken one was good as well. Also the portions and the prices are reasonable so definitely check it out and they have some daily specials. I saw this place on a youtube video that it is a "must see". The lady who works there seems less then thrilled to work here. No bathroom or place to sit. There is no restroom for paying customers! It might be grandfathered in in statute because it's not a 'real' building "Drive in Taco Stand" , but it's a permanent structure. Just know if you go here you can't pee here. When I was working downtown every day before the pandemic, we would come here for lunch and I have used the restroom in the past so I think they're just selective on who they let use the restroom. read more

Sunday, March 6 at 2:00ish: We ordered two Carne Asada and two Carnitas tacos. I had the Carnitas tacos, when they came, we started to eat, and there was so much grease pouring out of the tacos. It was amazing that I've never seen anything like before my life so I ate my first grease trap. I've had them at a catered wedding a long time ago but had never been to their brick and mortar. Coincidentally it was taco Tuesday and they offer $2.50 tacos with a wide variety of meat options. Well, I couldn't help myself. After I did a covid test(NEGATIVE, WOOHOO), I couldn't stop thinking about celebrating taco Tuesday, even though I was on my own today. It wasn't busy with only one person ahead of me waiting for their food. For $9.50, I ordered a combo of 3 Birrira (MINI) tacos with consume. The wait was about 15+ minutes. I waited in their covered outdoor seating in the back. It felt dirty with a little bit of standing water on the ground and old food sticking to the tables. After 15+ minutes I came back around the front to check on my food... for not being busy, it sure took a while. They handed me a box of 3 (MINI) tacos, which looked good. They still have pink tortilla shells from last month, so they were pink Birrira taco shells, stuffed with meat, onions and cilantro. There was no cheese...ummmm, ok. I can kind of live without cheese. The consume was just broth and bits of meat. I did have to go back and ask for a side of onions and cilantro to put in. After that, I was set. After a few bites, I noticed the meat tasted a day old or so. It had that reheated taste to it, but it was better than not. I finished eating and was on my way. My husband and I stopped at Chando's after a car salesman had recommended it. We knew we wanted Mexican food and they were quick to recommend it! After taking my first bite, I looked at my husband and said, "we need to move to Sacramento." Because it was SO GOOD. I ordered the veggie burrito. I'm pretty sure the burrito came with gauc, tomatoes, onions, cilantro, sour cream, some sort of a crema. The veggies were green bell peppers and mushrooms and were absolutely delicious!! My husband ordered the NorCal (which I believe has the same ingredients as the burrito, plus fries) with Carne Asada and absolutely loved it)! I just spent $30 on dinner here for one person. I ordered 1 shrimp taco, 1 asada taco, side of guac (over $3 ) melon juice and vanilla churro....ummm what?? I will say that the young man (thin, dark hair) working the register tonight was polite to everyone that walked in while I ordered, waited and ate. He is very knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients and addressed all questions regarding ingredients. His customer service was Since I was still hungry, I later ordered a mini torta. I enjoyed all the items that I ordered but it's just pricey. 2 tacos is not enough food and they go for over $3 each. The melon juice was ok. Ask for a cup to sample before you commit to the aguas frescas (horchata, jamaica, piña or melon). I find it odd that this is a Mexican place and rice is no where to be found on the menu. However, they do have beans! The fries w choice of protein looked good in pics but they're $13 so I didn't order them. If I'm back in Sacramento, I'd eat here again. The consensus favorite for best tacos in town. When it comes to Mexican food, Chando's Tacos tops the list in Sacramento no matter the category: Mexican restaurant, taco or torta. Chef Chando's special mix of spices for the meats, freshly made and hand padded tortillas, tacos topped with freshly pureed guacamole have all contributed to its popularity. The tacos are street-sized but piled with generous servings of meat. Inexpensive and made-to-order. If you are not squeamish about trying offal (organ) meats, the crispy tripas (tripe) and the tender buche (pork stomach) are the tastiest meat choices on the menu in my opinion. The carne asada (beef steak), if you are squeamish, is your next best and probably safest choice. The pollo (chicken), carnitas (braised pork) and adobado (marinated pork) were fine but not memorable. I was also surprised how flat the taste was and how dry the meat became after only a couple of hours. (I ordered extra for later that evening.) The tacos are prepared Tijuana-style: packed with grilled meats and topped with pureed guacamole. I would have liked my guacamole a little chunkier and their salsas with a bit more "kick." Friendly counter service. You have to love the freshly hand-padded tortilla shells, the generous servings and choices of meats, and the authenticity of the recipes. I get why this small, local taco restaurant chain is so popular and considered one of the must-try stops in Sacramento. I will reserve judgement for now, however, if I agree it is some of the best tacos in town. Burritos are loosely wrapped and falling apart; shrimp used in the shrimp burrito was fried and very dry; no freshness to the burrito (fresh veggies were mysteriously absent or just old).
