Tonight was cold, so comfort food felt like the right choice. While the food was good, the experience was completely undermined by the female bartender's lack of attention--or even basic acknowledgment. At first, she was clearly weeded, and when someone is busy, I understand the need to be patient. That wasn't the issue. After the place slowed down, she continued to ignore my wife and I, while seemingly going out of her way to ask people who were not sitting at the bar if they needed drinks--often talking right over the guests who were seated at the bar. I tried repeatedly to make eye contact. I asked to see the menu again since we were ready to order more food. She gave me the menu, but even though the bar was no longer crowded, I still couldn't get her attention for another 15 minutes. I placed the menu clearly in front of me to signal that I was ready, yet she continued serving people all around us. I then tried to break the ice by asking if the kitchen was still open. She replied, "Of course it's open," and walked away. I didn't want to call out "excuse me," because that felt rude. Five minutes later, I'd had enough. I asked for the check and calmly explained exactly what I'm explaining here. She began to apologize, but then a male bartender aggressively dropped the check in front of me, which felt like a clear message to leave. I've been coming here occasionally for over 20 years, and it has always been a solid, friendly place. Unfortunately, after the way we were treated tonight, I won't be returning.

Fortunately the customers at the bar were noisy but behaved themselves. We ordered a couple of soft drinks, I had a burger and my wife had BLT on Texas toast. Service was good, atmosphere was "greasy spoon sports bar" (a full step above scuzzy!), food was decent, and the men's room was dirty. If it had been 7 pm I would have gone to a nicer place but since nothing else was open and this place serves food until about 1:15 am it served a useful purpose. I took an antacid before I went to sleep and did just fine.
