They also have tours and tastings here at La Demoiselle, but if you have already been to the Pommery tour, you will be seeing something very similar, except that the atmosphere here is a bit more intimate and charming, as it truly is a fancy estate, vs. a large warehouse. They also have a large random selection of "unique" modern art exhibits on display here as well, such as a pudgy version of batman flying above the tasting room, and a floating chair trying to escape outside. The tours are also of the caves, and include tastings of the Millesimes d'Or. This place also required reservations in advance, but it was VERY empty as I think most people just stop at Pommery and pass this place by.

Given the experience with some of them I was not expecting anyone to be there to welcome us but I was wrong. We actually had to call to find out if anyone would be able to give us a tour and were told that it would be possible but only at 5:30 or later since one of the owners and general manager (I guess that would be the appropriate title) was not available until that time. This worked just fine for us since we had another appointment that was running until that time anyway. At around 5:30 we have come to the house and met with Mr Jacquinot who gave us a personal tour of this boutique producer of champagne. This champagne house is very young by comparison with some of the other big boys in Epernay of only about 60 years old or 4 generations of Jacquinot family making champagne. He gave us a tour of his operation, which is small and still uses some of the old technologies for maturation and fermentation which makes this fairly unique from some of the others we've seen but it was exciting. We went to the cellar which was one of the deepest in the area 19m below street level 109 steps, it was damp and still had clay floors so water made it slippery but what we saw there was very interesting. Some of the old vintages like 1973, 1953, 1949 still in existence and Jean-Manuel told me that he still sells some of the old vintages for those that order them while supplies last. After that we went to the tasting room and I have to say his philosophy of best grapes makes best champagne pays off.

The nice thing about this one is that they are open in the morning and afternoon, and you don't need to make a booking before you go. They will let you try several of their wines. Since I was driving, I could only have a splash, but they all seemed really good. I think this winery is the one we brought the most bottles home from. We got several bottles of the vintage (because it was so good as so much cheaper than at dinner, only around 25 Euros a bottle I think), and a few of the others. There's quite a bit of seating for tastings, but when we arrived, it was already half full, and the other half filled up quite quickly. There are English speakers if that is necessary for you. All in all, this is a great house with great wine. If we're back, I know we'll be making this a stop to pick up more of their delicious wine. (They also sell pre-made French food like foie gras that you can take away with you as well.)
