My roommate (who is 25yrs old) got jumped one day (yes, durning the day) just going to the 711 right behind the apartments . He was by himself, minding his own business, buying cigarettes. When he left the store he was approached by a high school kid, asking him for a cigarette. When my roommate kept walking and said no, he was followed by 4 high school boys, one of them had a broken arm because he had a blue cast on. As they followed him home, they kept referring to my roommate as a "nigger"...he is very white. He turned around and said "I'm not a "nigger" leave me alone." (Probably with a few cuss words in there, let's be honest). Anyways, as soon as he turned around, they ambushed him. The boy in the blue cast hit my roommate repeatedly WITH his cast in the ribs, and face. The kids also stole his cell phone... Long story short, we talked to the police countless times and they never got back to us. We also made a special trip to talk to principle Lundie. Security told us he was too busy, then I became a bitch and told her I needed to speak with him RIGHT NOW...his schedule all the sudden freed up, we sat and talked to him about what happened.. and he said he couldn't do anything about it, to contact police. Since then we have moved out of that area because of the crime, and still haven't heard anything back from police. Thanks for the HELP...not. -Heather

For All High School Drama Departments:…read more Our friends' daughter was in George Washington's production of The Secret Garden this past weekend. I was very impressed with the production and the fact that the drama teacher acted as a mentor and the students did everything else from director to producer to set and prop designers. It made me realize that this is the ultimate support of local art and education. For the price of the ticket, the Husband and I had a wonderful evening watching a well done production of The Secret Garden and for $1.50 more we shared a bottle of water and two cookies. You should check your local high school's theater productions and have a fun inexpensive evening out.

The nearby community is safe and convenient to a lot of businesses and shops. The programs such as IB on top of a strong AP program does produce a lot of good students. In terms of the student population I think GW has always had a healthy mix of varying ethnic and economic backgrounds. Both essential to developing well rounded personalities prepared to deal with the real world. If you are a planning to live in this school district definitely check things out for yourself, but don't discount GW just because its a "city" school.

The destination is usually tied to your current learning and you basically get to learn about it in real time and it is very fun. This school is nothing like I've ever been to and it is an amazing experience. 10/10

Now, my husband (also an RMSEL graduate) and I are looking at the school for our kindergarten-aged child. While RMSEL has grown and changed over the years, I believe its core values remain the same. The key takeaways I received from my time there are life skills that have followed me into adulthood and served me well in my career--resiliency, problem-solving, and independence. The expeditions were life-changing in so many ways: they offered my first experiences with developing countries, and they required a level of self-discipline that shaped who I am today. We currently have friends whose children are in kindergarten at RMSEL, and we love hearing about their experiences. Small class sizes, meeting children where they are, and introducing expeditions at such a young age are key reasons we're excited to return as a family. As a teenager, RMSEL was a blessing to me, even when I didn't always see it that way. Returning as an adult, I could recognize how the expeditions build resilience--even when the students themselves don't yet realize it. This school pushes kids to step outside their comfort zones, and many won't appreciate the benefits until years later. The very things I resisted as a teen are now the things I credit most for my personal growth. If you're looking for a school that teaches more than academics--a place that nurtures real-world life skills that will serve your children well into adulthood--RMSEL is a truly special place.

A couple of things that I would call out. 1. The school itself is very cliquish and allows a "Mean Girls" environment to exist. This is very different than the kind and welcoming cultures we have experienced at other Montessori Schools. 2. Specialization between students is treated as a nuisance by the teachers. On multiple occasions we asked for our child to be challenged more academically after coming home every day in tears about being bored. In each instance the teachers made commitments but then failed to follow through. 3. For the last 4 weeks of Spanish class the teacher had them re watch the same Cinco De Mayo celebration again and again. 4. They used our emergency contact information to solicit money from friends and family. 5. Despite the items above and based in large part on assurances from teachers, we committed to another year at the school to avoid another transition for our child. Once we were locked into the pricey financial investment for the following year, the assurances fell through and the school refused to let use out of our contract despite a questionable ability to meet our child's needs. My advice to those who consider MSD would be to not let the tour fool you. If you are looking for education tailored to your child's needs in a warm environment, this is not the school for you. We are currently paying MSD tuition while sending our daughter to a public school. We get a specialized and tailored learning plan, a teacher that follows through on commitments and and a Spanish class that teaches Spanish. It is worth every penny.
