This was no monument to love, only the memory of what food used to be. Our predictable order began with: Popadoms- not crispy, mango chutney (blended- possibly watered down left overs? -urgh), raita (not the freshest), dry mint in the yogurt and lime pickle out of an economy jar, no doubt. This confirmed my protestations about going in, I was punting for a Moroccan but was out voted. Sad times. The food was acceptable, nothing I couldn't have done myself with a jar of unilever Pataks at home, so boring. I don't understand how the 80's and 90's paved the way for generic uninspiring, pre-prepared Indian food when there is the potential for it to be so much better. Indian ( and also Chinese restaurants too) restaurant chefs...! Please use fresh ingredients. Fresh herbs. Simplify your menus, did darling Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, not put the fear of Ghee in you, today's dining expectations are so much higher. And if this sort of food is acceptable for you and you think this review is harsh then you are seriously missing out. A cold surly welcome, was smoothed over at the end by his colleague offering a mixed tray of sweet Corkey's shooters possibly after my party loudly commented on the disposition of our waiter. Corkey's bubblegum and After Eight flavoured shooters weren't our bag, but I guess this is a student city. Not I, however the obligatory 90's cliche, an actual after eight thin mint sliver with our bill cheered a couple of us up no end. I would love to campaign for the thousands of Indian restaurants in the UK to cook like 'their mamas used to'. Stop buying prepared sauces, stop describing everything as flavourful and tender, it shouldn't need a fanfare it should just be good, standard. Sorry to pick on you Taj Mahal, but I do believe you have rebranded yourselves as the New Taj Mahal and there is nothing, new about the experience you offer at all.

If I could rate 0 stars, I would…read more First of all, we called and ordered a takeaway - it being a Saturday night we were informed it would be near to an hour and a half wait, which wasn't an issue at all. The issue was, after an hour it was delivered (bearing in mind, we never gave our address and stated we would collect), the food was cold despite us living a one minute walk away, and when we rang to request for a replacement, the member of staff was unbelievably rude, informing us the food couldn't possibly be cold, as it had only just come out of the oven. In the end, they informed us they would send someone out immediately to collect our order and replace. 20 minutes later, our "replacement" was once again delivered - this time, only containing rice and chips, so we called again. The member of staff was again rude, denied sending us cold food and constantly talking and shouting over us, refusing to send out anything else. After requesting to speak to a manager, we were treated to a hugely unpleasant conversation, constantly talking over us on the phone, shouting and the excuse being "it's a Saturday night, I don't care that your food is cold, I'm busy." I completely appreciate it is a Saturday night, and the time for the order isn't the issue. The issue here is the extreme lack of customer service, the refusal to believe their own customers that the food they received was cold, which resulted in us having to wait two and a half hours for a dinner which could have been very easily resolved in the first place. Would not recommend this restaurant, purely based on the customer service, the extremely bad attitude and the rudeness of the manager and staff tonight.

The Chadni Express is the take away sister of Heavitree's Chadni curry restaurant. Situated in…read morePinhoe Road, this take away serves the same menu, but delivers to most parts of Exeter for free. It has to be said that this is not the most attractive building to visit, I have had a few deliveries but once I made the mistake of going there to order and it really isn't very inspiring. Strangely for a take away, there are tables and chairs and quite a large seating area, I don't think it would be a problem if you wanted to stay and eat your food there, but it is grubby and uninviting to be honest. Still, the food is cheapish and pretty good - not amazing but nothing to complain about!
