Dr. Roghair and his staff are amazing. When I first went to Dr. Roghair I could barely walk, I have bone on bone arthritis in my knee. After my treatments with Dr. Roghair I'm able to keep up with my 10 year old again. He is a miracle worker. I did hyaluronic acid injections and PRP and I don't even have to take Tylenol anymore unless I over do it (like when I hosted Thanksgiving). The treatments didn't even hurt, he uses ultrasound to guide the needles. It's hard to be in constant pain and I was losing hope thinking that was my new normal, I'm so happy it's not. I would give 5 stars to Dr. Roghair for his mastery of the ultrasound wand amongst and everything else except one: his prescription for knee braces. The one has decided to sling is a complete piece of junk: It won't stay in adjustment because of a design flaw. Roghair's administrative assistant was unmoved. After returning the 2nd. sample because of the same problem (not a one-off defect as it turned out) my insurance record was amended so that I could pursue and alternative on my own. Luckily, the one I found used a different mechanism which by design, can't go out of adjustment! 3 years on without injections or knee replacement surgery, a replacement brace was authorized due to wearing out. read more

Dr. Roghair saved my Thailand trip! I have a degenerative left knee that led to chronic back, knee, and ankle problems. Despite extensive visits to physical therapy, alternative medicine, and orthopedic specialists, my knee got progressively worse. My acupuncture doctor referred me to Dr. Roghair. He took the time to diagnose and explain my injury thoroughly. He offered me various conservative and non-invasive treatments. At a follow-up appointment, I shared about my upcoming Thailand trip and my fear that I could not walk or climb stairs. He gave me a cortisone injection to aid my healing. I'm so thankful that he did! The most sacred and celebrated treasures in Thailand all seem to sit at the top of the highest pagoda, temple, or mountain. I have a knee that has some missing meniscus. Several years ago I was told a new knee was in order. It was suggested that I try injections of hyaluronic acid (common name: human motor oil) and warned that if I had any relief, it would last maybe a week, six months at most. Well it lasted 18 months, when I simply went in for an "oil change" and went off for another 18 months of pain-free knee. This latest "oil change" was obfuscated by Brown and Toland's delay of a Physician's order of more than a month, allowing additional potential damage to said knee. This company is gathering quite a roar of discontent from patients. Enter Cal Sports Institute and poor Dr Eppley's deteriorating office staff. I was able to get three appointments in subsequent Fridays and received shot #1 of 3 on schedule. When I showed up on time for #2, I was told the appointment was cancelled (they claimed to have left a message. Our phones will not accept calls from unknown callers and hangs up on them) and #2 was pushed out a week. As I was already 5 weeks late thanks to Brown and Toland, I was upset. Not impolitely so, but irritated. Enter Dr. Roghair, unbidden. He had heard the conversation and offered to provide #2 then and there. He not only injected me but offered a tutorial on knee anatomy, pointing out the good and the bad areas of my knee. Astonished, I left the office injected (as expected) and informed well beyond any one of my many previous treatments. This office has repaired my rotator cuff, replaced both of my wife's shoulders and one of her knees, so we are hardly strangers Bravo to this extremely competent, human doctor who stepped up when the flummoxed staff stuttered and stammered In lieu of being helpful. Dr. Roghair is a great doctor. Thorough exam, ordered imaging when requested, explained the imaging in a voicemail instead of making us wait for an appointment. During the appointment was so friendly about showing and explaining the scan results. Highly recommend him. The only reservation I would add, not worth taking a star off for: he was absolutely right to diagnose the sciatic nerve causing leg pain, and the MRI he ordered showed one of the spinal discs bulging out as he thought. However, he didn't include the hip in the MRI and subsequent PT has found that some of the sciatic pain seems to be local to the leg. Might have been good to consider that possibility but PT is zeroing in on it. read more

Dr. Roghair continues to impress me. He is consistently on time, prepared to discuss my health concerns (and reviewing my medical history), careful in making diagnoses and prescribing treatment, and personable. And he explains his findings and the treatment options/suggestions very well. I never feel rushed, dismissed, or patronized. The only negative is that the word (about how great he is) has gotten out, so appointments generally must be booked several weeks in advance. The office staff is generally competent and friendly, too. From my experience of living in the Bay Area and seeing all kinds of doctors, this is very rare. read more

I hate to put this review here because if I had one complaint it's that he is so busy and it can be hard to get an appointment. That said he's one of the best physicians I've ever interacted with. I originally was referred to Dr. Eppley, who was recommended to me by a friend (ex-NFL) who had shoulder surgery. As Dr. Eppley was not accepting new patients, I was given to Dr. Roghair. I have to preface this with the fact that Dr. Roghair is a personable, effusive man, and an athlete that treats other athletes. You can tell this from speaking with him. But he was the second doctor I had seen in the course of a month for a shoulder injury I had from a fall I had while skating, and he totally missed the boat on recognizing a fracture. This "oversight" was the downfall of the rest of my appointments with him and the PT scripts he assigned to me at SOL, a PT place in Rockridge. He asked me about my accident, we discussed his playing on an ice hockey league, he deduced it was only a dislocated shoulder (when it actually turned out to be a dislocated shoulder, a broken shoulder bone, and two broken ribs), took a cursory glance at my X-ray, and wrote me a prescription for PT. The exercises he prescribed at PT were strengthening and light weight bearing exercises, which are contraindicated on broken bones. Consequently, I was constantly in pain for the following six weeks and upon visiting Dr. Roghair again was told I was probably healing slowly due to age (I am over 40 and took no offense to the statement). Because I am in relatively good shape and eat well, historically I have been a very quick healer. The professionalism of his both his offices was fine, and Dr. Roghair is probably functional if he does not miss your diagnosis. But the fact that he did resulted in permanent damage to my shoulder as it healed incorrectly, causing it to be shorter on one side than the other. read more

Although Dr Roghair is a knowledgeable doctor, I agree that the office and billing department at this orthopedic office is extremely challenging. My bill was double what I thought it would be after spending hours on the phone with my insurance company and their office. The Berkeley office never returned my phone calls for months... something is really wrong here. read more

I love Dr. Roghair. He used to do a shift or two at the Urgent Center at TANG when I went to Cal. He's sweet, and very nice, and fairly direct without being a jerk. He was pretty nice about the fact that I get nervous around the doctor and tend to grill them with questions about what's going on. He really did make an effort to help me with unusual symptoms and he got it that because they were unusual they were freaking me out. I thought his bedside manner was one of the best I've come across. Though he normally practices sports medicine, I thought his general knowledge of medicine was great. Also, the athletes that I knew agreed with me that he was awesome. So if you're injured and need some TLC, he's the doc for you. read more

In the years we've been seeing Dr. Roghair, he's fixed a shoulder impingement, arthritic knees, and accurately diagnosed a pesky hip condition that had eluded identification by other doctors. That's just me. He also kept Handsome Hubby's knees going long after their pull date and when replacement became needed, steered him towards to an excellent surgeon (Dr. Zwahlen).. All other reviews say Dr. Roghair is knowledgeable, experienced, and puts patients at ease-- and I say a rousing amen to that. He's also on time for appointments and never seems rushed. What puzzles me is no other reviewer even hinted that he's one heck of a handsome dude. With a spandex onesie, tights and a cape, definitely super-hero casting. Not that that matters when choosing a physician. But the distraction sure helps suppress the "ewwws" when your knee gets that healing shot. read more

There are so many things I like about Dr. Roghair! First, and most importantly, he's a good doctor. He listens well, give straight-forward advice and explains what's going on clearly. After going through a more conservative plan for treatment, I ended up having surgery on my Achilles. The surgery was nearly painless and see to be successful so far. Secondly, his office is organized and runs on time. I had a 10:20 appointment the other day. I was seen at 10:20, he listened to me, made recommendations, wrote them down for me and made a follow up plan. I was home by 10:50. I really appreciate that he doesn't waste my time. I don't know how he manages to run on time, honestly,because I've never felt rushed by him, but he does. The office staff are professional and friendly. Lastly, he's nice and very personable. Dr Roghair is simply fantastic. He has worked with our school for more than 6 years. He takes time with our players. He comes in on off days, schedules patients on his lunch hour to ensure nobody stays in pain one second longer than needed. As a medical provider, I know medicine is not perfect (to an aforementioned posters comments) but this group at Cal sports and Ortho is darn close. I have not seen an example in 2 years that I have known Dr Roghair where he has misdiagnosed a trauma injury...I mean he is a ex-football payer and still plays hockey. AWESOME! Dr. Roghair has a great manner, he talks and laughs with you to put you at ease. He didn't seem rushed nor was he rushing me as I was asking questions. I was very nervous about having a treatment that consisted of having shots in both knees because of osteoarthritis. He put me at ease immediately, talked me through the procedure and assured me about how safe the procedure was. I'm very happy. i originally had another orthopedist but he had lousy social skills. I backed out of having the shots and he didn't seem to care at all. I'm one of those people where i"m not going to have someone work on me if I don't feel comfortable with them. The hylarounic acid shots for the knee do help And they don't hurt at all. After the first shot I could feel the difference in my knee. My only complaint is that the effects wear off before you can have the next series of shots. (I think my insurance only approves two or three treatments per year.) So if you have it done, take advantage of those first couple of pain free months and get in that hike or trip you've been planning. read more

Dr. Roghair is probably one of the nicest, gentlest doctors you could ever meet. He listens and he cares. I have been through so much with my knees in the last three years. Dr. Roghair has done everything possible to keep me from having to have total knee replacements. Unfortunately, my knees are so bad that none of it worked.
