    Small bites

We had an excellent and informative tasting tour with Julie. She was very knowledgeable and taught us many things. The tour is very nice. The place is very beautiful and is certainly comparable to the best of Napa and Sonoma. We were able to go to the vineyards and to the barreling areas and learn about their biodynamic methods. The tastings were generous and varied and included vary appropriate and tasty food pairings (small bites). After the tour we were able to walk around and take a look at their fascinating collection of old winery tools which are meticulously cataloged.

They do not take in walk ins despite what their website says.

She offered to pick us up from the station when we got in (we had 1/2 hour from when our train arrived and when the tour started). You give them your credit card but that's only for holding your spot on the tour. No charges were noted from our credit card. After the tour is over, you pay Laurence for the trip with cash. On the tour- Laurence was very knowledgable about presenting the three locations. We opted for three wineries. She presented the first cellar, the second cellar and third was presented by the wineries staff. I loved learning about the different regions and different wines! Definitely had some of the most amazing wines of my life on this tour. From the 2nd winery, Vincent Sauvestre, I fell in love with the Pommard and Volnay. I loved the buttery aftertaste of the Pommard and the light buttery fruity taste of the Volnay. I am enlightened. The scales have fallen off my eyes. I never knew French wines could be so amazing. The only pitfall was another French patron who ridiculed our group for not knowing French. Unfortunately, some of us did know French. And knew he was sh*t talking us. Not cool. He turned red when he realized we knew he was talking about us. From the third winery, we had a white Chardonnay called Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru. That first sip forever changed how I look at wine. It was crisp, clean, slightly sweet and so flavorful. It tasted of rich minerals from the Beaune soil. It was the best white wine of my life. I was really sad to learn the price (88 Euros a bottle). Thanks for the enlightening journey! I had an amazing time!

Wanting an efficient "taste" of the region we decided to take a privately escorted tour. We decided on Burgundy on a Plate based on the very interesting tours that Sue offered as we were looking for something more unique, more personal and more local and Burgundy on a Plate appeared as a huge standout. Since our joint goal was to learn as much as we could about the wine, region and terroir we wanted an english speaker who could translate the intricacies of the region in a detailed manner. As much as we are fascinated with the wines of the region we were also excited and intrigued about truffles, foods, and fruits of the region. Sue is the type of person you find yourself wanting to spend more time with. She is knowledgeable, witty, and very charming. We enjoyed her "joie de vivre" and her passion for France, Burgundy, wine and all things gourmet. She was very organized and timely with her domaine visits, and seemed to have good rapport with the vintners. I talked on the 'phone with Sue ahead of time which was well worth doing as we had the best customized tour possible.

Florian shared his extensive knowledge of local wine accompanied with the region's history. Touring the area by bike gives you the opportunity to really take in the incredible sights and smells of the area. After a short ride, we stopped for a snack and a glass of local wine. Florian even shared produce from his garden. Our next stop was an explanation of a plat of roadside vines. Then, a short bike to Chassagne Montrachet. After touring the winery, we were treated to a very informative tasting by winery staff. We were able to experience the differences in wines due to their distinct terrior. Our next stop was a picnic style lunch at a very nice restaurant. It really gave our group an opportunity to chat and really enjoy Burgundy, over food and wine. We also discovered Florian's home town, Rully, makes very nice wine. After an enjoyable lunch, we cycled to Pommard. There was a headwind, but still a lovely ride. Domaine Lejeune was the last stop of our tour and it was a lovely ending. We were treated to a winery tour during harvest. Seeing the action at the sorting table was a bonus for a winelover. The tasting did not disappoint. We enjoyed wines from Pommard and Mersault. Two of my favorite Burgundian wines! From Pommard, we were transferred back to the pickup location(Tourist Office) by van. Our full day tour seemed to pass quickly and were appreciative to have taken in so much of Burgundy in such a short period. I recommend you ask questions and by an active participant in the tour. Florian is an excellent tour guide who's knowledge extends much further than the local wine and a fun guy to spend the day with. Daryl Gaitan

Although we wish we were, we don't know a whole lot about wine, but we do enjoy tasting to find a favorite and learning more about how to taste. Just buy a tasting package at the counter. You have your choice of 7 wines for 11 euros & a souvenir metal tasting cup or 7 wines + the grand cru wines for 15 euros & a souvenir wine glass. We got 1 of each. Head down into the 13th century caves below and read through the tasting notes and info about each wine. It started with reds, went to white, and ended with the grand cru fancy cooler that a store associate will help you with scanning your "badge." You can pick up a wine carrier to the wines you'd like to buy along the way or just wait until the end for the store. They also go through if you want to ship an order home too. Everyone was very friendly. We ended up loving one of the whites, which surprised us. Stowed it in the luggage and can't wait to break it open for a special occassion!
