The Royalty is a wee local cinema in Windermere, and seems like a quirky little place. Being a city…read moregirl, I'm normally at the huge multi-plexes, which are pretty one dimensional and soul-less, so I found it a nice experience, as The Royalty has a bit more character about it. We went in the main entrance. There's an old-fashioned ticket seller's booth, but no-one was about. A queue formed, and we all waited and shuffled our feet. Around the foyer, there's a few pictures from ye olde cinema days which were interesting to look at. After a few minutes, an employee appeared on the balcony, and called down to us that the movie was showing on the other screen. Clearly we were a bunch of dummies, although perhaps a sign might have been helpful for customers. To get to the other screen, you leave that bit of the building, walk down the outside of the building and into the other entrance, which we all duly did. In that building, there's another booth, and you get old fashioned paper tickets, which pleased me greatly, for reasons I'm not sure about. You can also buy confectionery. The screen is then straight next to it so no traipsing about. Ideal. The screen room (is that what it's called?) had a bit of a strange feature. It seemed to me that the seats were on a slope. Pretty standard you might say. But sloping the wrong way! Resulting in the seats at the back being lower down than the front. Maybe it was an optical illusion but that's how it seemed to me. There were the usual trailers, and amusing local adverts. Then a guy came out with an old-fashioned ice cream tray round his neck. I really wasn't expecting that! The only thing missing was an advert for Wrestler's hotdogs and a declaration that the non-smoking seats were at the side. Remember that - when you could smoke in a cinema? The usual palaver with the curtains. Lovely gold shiny ones I noticed. Then the movie began. The final quirk that I noticed is that they have put a litter bin right in the middle of the aisle. And people actually used it during the movie. So occasionally, as we were unwittingly sat right next to it, we'd get disturbed by someone thudding litter into it. Bit strange. But also, if you had to evacuate the cinema, it's totally in the way! In summary, a reasonable wee cinema, with some funny little quirks to keep us city girls enthralled.

There are regularly changing exhibitions in the Art Gallery, and interesting history and art displays in Old Tullie House and in the new wing. They are really good at putting on activities for children at half term and in the school holidays, and these are usually free. It's a gem - and the cafe's good too! Tullie House is also the only place you will be able to see arthouse films in Carlisle now.

You must visit the Beatrix Potter exhibit in Bowness-on-Windermere if you have little kids, or are…read morea little kid at heart (like I am!). In addition to the her first and most famous book (Peter Rabbit) which she apparently penned as a letter to the son of her governess and then self-published in 1901, every other story Beatrix Potter wrote get its own diorama and/or interactive section. Such as Jemima Puddle-Duck, Benjamin Bunny, and Mr. Jeremy Fisher. It's like walking through every story she ever wrote! In addition to all the beautiful dioramas, I also loved the beautiful outdoor garden, filled with sculptures and beautiful shrubbery and flowers. The garden was in a multilevel terraced section along the side of the building and included several educational signs naming flowers and vegetables and showing where small creatures make their homes (like hedgehogs in pipes, and frogs in damp spaces behind slates and stones). Our kids also enjoyed spending time completing puzzles using touch screens (Beatrix Potter is staying current for the iPad and Kindle generation!) in the interactive section halfway through the exhibit. Every puzzle was of a beloved Beatrix Potter illustration, and my two-year-old squealed with delight every time she completed one! Tickets were inexpensive (£6.95 for grown-ups and £3.65 for kids 3-16) - there is also a family pass for £30 which gives two adults and two children access for a year. Parking was easy (ample long-stay parking just across the street) and there is a nice tea room on the premises as well, so we didn't have any trouble waiting out the light drizzle that started as we were about to leave. You get 10% off if you have a family pass. So if you're in the Lake District with your kids, be sure to stop by Windermere and check out the Beatrix Potter exhibit. You won't be sorry!

This is a very busy club cattering for not only the locals but for many visiting clubs. A lounge bar which is nicely decorated & dispays the Thomas Lipton Trophy (1st world cup) & a smaller bar which is exclusively male only. On the next floor it has another lounge bar & large concert room. They hold bingo nights & at weekends it's always busy with live entertaiment. There is no parking immediatly outside the club but spaces can be found around the village green or by the post office. The beer is always cheaper than the local pubs which in the main are closeing one by one. Worth a visit if only to see the world cup from 1909 & 1911 winning team of West Auckland.

The building is well designed with a grass roof & loads of activities for everyone to enjoy, how the kids in Barnard Castle can moan that there isn't anything to do is beyond me. We went to see a Shakespeare play put on by the turrets teenage theatre group outside which was great. Whilst there we had a mooch around and saw all sorts of activities going on. They have a flootlite BMX track which was full to bursting. Music studios where people of all ages where doing their thing with instruments. A garage where mechanics where learning new skills, a lake to do canoeing. Down at the lower end was a fishing lake & high wire/climbing area. Inside the main complex rooms for the arts, dance & martial arts. Check out the web site for activities or if you are local then get yourself along, I'm sure you will find something to do. The roof is a beautiful shade of blue, and it's one of the biggest and loudest venues in League Two with 18k fans able to attend. This might even be in my top 5 lower league stadiums in the country. It's wonderful. It's been kept up well. It's very loud. It's passionate. It's a credit to the region and country. I saw Oxford play here years ago, away, and then I saw a game here in 2011 and again in 2014. I'm addicted to seeing games here. I've seen hundreds in my life but coming here is always an intense and memorable day out. I've been to most UK & US stadiums, due to lifelong obsessions with travel, sport & especially footy (soccer to Americans). Born & raised in England, I followed Oxford United (hometown team) to stadia all over the country at away games, and later Liverpool (fave team) around. Every stadium review - like all my reviews - are from first-hand personal experience, usually from several visits. In 2011, I was on music tour in the UK, and visited most stadiums for fun in my spare time. As recently as Fall 2014, when I was "stuck" in UK for 3 months, I went to hundreds yet again while travelling. I have pictures of me at most, which I'll post later. Also, when back in UK I'll take more pix, and add more stadia! *** return to regular review *** Its history is long and storied, and it was even a Premier League (wasn't called that then) ground in the 70s when the team reached the top flight for one season only. A great social club based at the top end of the town. Good prices being a social club and great…read morefriendly staff. A good selection of drinks available from the bar. The place also has a good size function room available to hire for any occasion from christenings to birthday parties - reasonably priced charge for this. The room is done out nice and the staff always helpful, whether to open earlier to setup room for a party or any other request. Buffets can also be ordered from the club for your party rather than having to look for an outside caterer saving time of contacting different people when organising a party.
