Prepare to wait! Actually we got lucky and got a spot at the bar. The place is extremely small and I wouldn't recommend a party bigger than 4. It reminds me a lot of a Mexican version of "Grad-school" down town. The grill is directly in front of a bar type seating area, and there is also a beverage bar near the back. I ordered the chicken burrito; it's huge with the beans and rice inside. I also opted for the queso cheese on top. The wife got traditional chicken tacos which were a pretty good size. The one thing that was gross is there was some sort of sauce down the whole side of my beer can. It's definitely above most Mexican food places around here, but I'd say there are one or two other spots in Springfield that are comparable or better. Ok everyone has there favorite mexican restaurant in town that's just a given. But if you haven't eaten at Cesar's then your missing out. The menu is a mix of tratdional Mexican and El Salvadorian food, all cooked fresh to order. This place is just amazing and personally I think it's hands down the most authentic in town. There are a few others in town but Cesar's takes the cake. Now it is a small place and is often packed at peak hours, so don't be thrown off by this, there is a reason, the foods worth the wait. So if your in a hurry or get agrivated over a wait, do us all a favor and get some fast food, the rest of us patient folks will be rewarded by a fantastic meal. Some of the highlights here are the, Salvadorian Pupusas, fajita style quesadilla, and if you are a Torta fan these sandwiches are massive! One of my personal favorites is the grilled chicken Sopes, now I'm not going to go into detail describeing what's in these traditional Mexican dishes, because honestly you should already know. The vibe of Cesar's is one of the main draws. It is a smaller establishment but fun. All of the servers are friendly and provide good service. It have very specific tastes in Mexican cuisine (it has to be similar to SoCal) and Old Cesar's gets pretty close. The food is tasty and reasonably priced. If you are looking for a more traditional Mexican meal ( NOT smothered in white cheese sauce), I would recommend giving them a try. read more

Springfield has a lot of really delicious Tex-Mex, but Cesar's is clearly a favorite of many! Get there early, and even then you might have to wait. The wait's not so bad though, because you can order a drink to sip on in the outside waiting area, and you get to take the cup home! You must try the Skinny Margarita, it's refreshing and really packs a punch! The space is so well decorated, there are many personal touches and the ambiance is great, although it can be very loud. The service is fantastic every time I go! To start, their salsa is a little spicier than most restaurants in the area, and it has a great fresh flavor. We had the Steak Fajita Burrito, Chilli Relleno, Lengua Taco, and Pozole (not pictured). The Steak Fajita Burrito was just what I wanted, all the fixings of a Steak Fajita plate wrapped in a fluffy flour taco and topped with queso. Yum! The Chilli Relleno is always a favorite and it has an excellent flavor. The Lengua Taco is very authentic, served with cilantro and onion. The Pozole had a great flavor, although the pork was a bit dry. Overall, Cesar's is a Springfield classic and a favorite for a reason. Definitely give it a try! read more

This is a wonderful Mexican restaurant that serves incredible food. Very prompt service with a quick delivery of our order. I had a chimichanga and it was delicious: such a complex flavor. The accompanying elements are often a letdown it many places, but not here: refried beans and the rest - all fantastic. Their drinks are amazing. My dining partner ordered a margarita and it was so strong. A very welcome break from the mediocre drink service in many restaurants. If there was anything I would change, it would be the ambiance. This was quite brightly lit and the background noise was high. I would love to have seen it more romantic and quieter. read more

Came in with the lady for dinner. This location is popular and small. The bar was lined with people elbow to elbow and every table full. We figure they must be doing something right and settle in for the wait. Great seating area outside to wait so good there. 30 minutes later we are seated at a 6 top table and offer to let another couple sit with us to help with the rush. Was really fun. I go for the Viva Mexico. Three enchiladas, beef, chicken, and cheese with a side of rice. All three were excellent but my favorite had to be the beef. The seasoning on there was killer. The lady had another enchilada dish and said she really like it too. The Good Great Food. Friendly Service. Big Drinks. The Bad Popular to expect a wait in prime time. Was in Springfield to see our youngest, and as usual to feed him. So we got on Yelp to find a new place to add to many places to take him to eat. Lol. So we figured we love Mexican food, and the name was cool. The place was packed, which we thought was a good sign. We were sitted quickly and our waiter was on point. We explained that it was our first time, and he told us some of the favorites that others chose, plus a couple of his favorites; because the menu had everything Mexican you could think of. We each ordered something we knew, because that is our way of testing the restaurant we eating at. Anyway, before our food came we ordered margaritas, my son opted for water. And they were huge and good. The food came on hot plates with a lot of food. The food was good and the drinks were good, the company excellent. We'll be back. OMG. Quite possibly the best tacos in Springfield, maybe Missouri, and possibly the Midwest. Large and flavorful and juicy with expertly-seasoned meats. I ordered four, and then despite being full, ordered two more, just because. They had to roll me out of there, but it was worth it. My experience started with the chips and salsa. The chips were nice and thin and definitely homemade. The salsa, though--that's where I got into trouble. Deliciously flavorful, with a great smoky flavor and a nice hint of heat (most standard "mild" salsas that Mexican restaurants serve completely lack any punch at all, so this was nice). The salsa was so good I used the entire carafe (which filled two bowls) on about half the chips. My first order of tacos consisted of the "Cesar's pork," adobada, al pastor, and birria. I asked what Cesar's pork was and the answer wasn't super clear but consisted of "pork cooked a long time" (sounded good enough to me). The tacos came out plain with just tortillas and heaping piles of meat plus a side garnish of cilantro and onions and a healthy dollop of obviously-not-from-a-jar guacamole. A minute of spreading the toppings around (plus some of my last drops of the delicious red salsa) and I had my very own authentic street-style tacos. All four were super delicious and juicy, with distinct flavors featured. I really can't decide which one I liked the best, but al pastor is my go-to for tacos, and this one was awesome with a clear fresh pineapple flavor shining through. The birria was the most unique of the bunch; although traditional birria often features goat (with its associated strong pungency), this one was a much more mild beef but still featured great notes of garlic and a few other spices in the mix. The four I ordered were so delicious that I couldn't help myself and ordered two more: asada and chicken. Both were equally delicious as well. At $2.50 a piece, my order came to $15--a little more expensive than I had intended, but the tacos are quite large (four would probably more than satisfy a normal person). In fact, they're large enough that my one and only complaint is that they don't follow the style found in northern Mexico and use two corn tortillas per taco--mine were so moist and juicy and full that holes formed in the tacos when I tried to pick mine up. I arrived at about 7pm to a packed house and a line of four parties in front of me. I've been told this is not at all unusual, so probably expect a wait. As I was dining alone, I easily snagged a spot at the bar, which saved me from delaying filling my stomach, and the bartender was quite friendly and efficient as well. I left at about 8 and there was still a line almost out the door. I've been very pleased by the quality of Mexican food in SGF (as long as you know where to look--417 Mag is a good start), and this is high up in the running for best-I've-had (to date, at least). It's also the best I've had on the east side of the city, and it's awesome that it's so convenient to 65, which means it's about 10 minutes from home. As much as I've enjoyed Tortilleria Perches and some of the other options on the west side, this is likely to become my go-to place because it's so much closer...and so delicious! And the flavors I chose, Cesar's Old Mexico!! My first time. I hate making decisions and I love street tacos (or as they call them authentic) so I chose a carnitas and a chicken. First, I was so happy to see only cilantro and onion as toppings. I asked for lime. Both tacos were amazing, but I feel carnitas are pretty simple so I will elaborate on the chicken!!! OH MY FREAKING GOSH, it was so juicy and had so much flavor. Way more meat than a taco needs, so I had leftovers. Just yummy! read more

And service is...well...questionable at times. It's just so busy they are usually inadequately staffed. But the food more than makes up for it. With portion sizes that could give Mt. Everest a run for its money, totally reasonable prices and cuisine that never fails to hit the spot, Cesar's should be a shoo-in for five star status. Unfortunately, there are a couple of factors that hold it back. Chief among these concerns is the noise level, which is more akin to what you might expect at a rowdy bar than anything resembling a sit-down restaurant. At least in part, this is a function of Old Mexico's second major shortcoming: its tiny location, and the limited seating that results. None of this is to say the food isn't wonderful. It absolutely is. But our ability to enjoy it thoroughly was limited by the hyena-like cackling at the table behind us, the general commotion of the open-air kitchen area and the constant in-and-out of customers coming and going - all things patrons could be spared, if only the owners/management would do a little extra planning. read more

As someone who was born and raised in central California, this is the best Mexican food I've had in the area! I had the tacos: carne asada, carnitas, and brirra and they were amazing. The meat cooked perfectly. My bf had the Colorado, which was also mouth watering and big portion. Everything is fresh and the decorations and vibe of the place is beautiful and fun.
