I had a friend who used CertaPro and was happy with the results. He gave me Shawn's business card, and Shawn came over to provide an estimate. I explained that I wanted the house repainted with the same color and paint type that was previously used -- no color changes. About two-thirds of my home is brick with aluminum-clad soffits. The rest includes wooden casement windows. I recently had a new roof and gutters installed, so all I needed was for the house to be repainted exactly as it currently is. I also have double front doors that did not need painting. Shawn told me I'd be getting one of his best crews -- the same crew that painted my friend's house -- and quoted a price of $4,139. However, instead of a crew, one person showed up to do the entire job. To his credit, he did an excellent job. That's not the issue. The issue is that it took him a total of 10 hours over three days to complete the work. (I confirmed this using my security camera footage, which shows when his truck arrived and left each day.) Two other companies had quoted me similar jobs, estimating about 10 gallons of paint at roughly $80 per gallon -- around $800 in materials. That leaves $3,339 for labor, meaning I effectively paid $333 per hour for one person to paint my house. For that rate, I should be hiring Vincent van Gogh, not a one-man crew. I understand that CertaPro has overhead, but the painter arrived in an unmarked, rusted Chevy van that appeared to be his own vehicle. It took him several minutes of yanking on the cord just to get his old power washer started. So, I can safely assume CertaPro isn't pouring much investment into its "fleet" or equipment. The real kicker came when I noticed they refused to paint the wooden frame surrounding my patio door. It's a standard sliding glass patio door -- two large panes of glass, one fixed and one movable, each surrounded by about 1¾ inches of wood. It would have taken maybe 10 minutes to paint, yet I was told that "wasn't included". For a $4,139 paint job, that kind of nickel-and-diming is unacceptable. The proposal even includes photos clearly showing that patio door and fixed window as part of the areas to be painted. Yes, I can paint it myself in 15 minutes -- that's not the point. The point is being charged an exorbitant amount for 10 hours of labor by one person, only to have minor details like that left unfinished. Because of this experience, I can say with confidence that I will never recommend CertaPro to anyone. I hope the 15 minutes they saved by skipping that frame was worth the lost referral. read more

I submitted a request for consultation re: crown molding installation through the CertaPro website. The rep visited May 24, and we talked primarily about two jobs the company could do: crown molding installation (they do time and materials approach, etc.) and exterior painting of the front. (Other jobs like refinishing the floor was something they don't do.) I made clear the crown molding installation was the primary job I was concerned with. On May 31, I texted the rep looking for the quote. Jun 1, he said he was back in the field and apologized, believing he had already sent the quote. On Jun 2, I pinged again, and reiterated I was mostly interested in the crown molding quote. Jun 3, still no quote. On Jun 5, I called the 800 number, letting them know I hadn't heard anything. The rep said he'd call the owner (I realized then this is a franchise model). I got an email estimate for exterior painting on Jun 6 from the rep I talked with. I emailed same day asking if there would be a quote for the crown molding. The rep texted me they didn't do crown molding. I responded I was confused and sent them a screen shot of the website that said the company does crown molding installation. I called the 800 number, asking why if I submitted a request for crown molding did someone from a franchise that doesn't do crown molding come out to look at the job, walk around telling me about their time and materials approach to doing the job, only to come back to me and tell me they don't do crown molding installation? The phone rep said they'd ask Mary to call me back. After no calls or comms from Mary, I called the 800-number again on Jun 9, letting them know I hadn't heard from anyone. They said they'd let Mary and Duke know. Two hours later, the original rep who initially visited called (no call from Mary or Duke). It became a heated conversation as I pressed him why he'd waste his and mine coming out and walking through the job if they didn't do crown molding in the first place, and why hadn't my request been sent to another franchise nearby. I then called the 800 number again to note the interaction. This might have been an anomaly, but one concerning enough to post here. read more

I would not recommend Certapro painters. My husband and I had them out to paint our home, decks and garage just over a year ago. They explained that they would power wash and then paint and it would be just over $5000 we agreed to the price as we assumed since they were a reputable company that the price would reflect the quality of the work done. We were disappointed as after it was power washed there were flakes of the old paint that came off and instead of making sure the surfaces were clear they just painted over the flakes. There were also several places that didn't get painted at all. A couple days after there were also parts that were bubbling up. I contacted the office and they had someone come out and they did paint the places that were missed, didn't acknowledge the flakes that were now painted into the deck, and told me that they would pop the bubbles and paint the wood underneath but it was because of the old paint they painted on top of because what should've happened was they should scrapped any old paint that was an issue away before painting but that would've taken more time and been more money. I would've been fine paying that money if it would've even been mentioned when they came out to originally give us a quote before the house was painted. Again Certapro painters are supposed to be experts and professionals, I would have taken the advice. Less then a year after it was painted my deck spaces look like they have never been painted, see picture below. When I tried to get in touch with the company I received no response from the local office so I sent something to the corporate customer service. They forwarded the information on to the local office. After two weeks I sent another email to the corporate customer service since I hadn't heard back. They assured me that they would send the information on to the general manager and have them respond ASAP. It has been another week with no response. It took me awhile to find out which office to review because when we got the house painted it was listed at Cass Ave in Westmont, I did find out however that it is the same person running this location in Clarendon Hills now. read more

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE. I had high expectations of certapro's "quality" service. However, I truly regret ever dealing with Certapro. They spilled paint on my carpet and did not say until we discovered it later when it was too late. It looked like someone tried to wipe it with a dirty towel and made it worse. The paint on the carpet was the same color as the paint they used on the wall. Smoking gun proof! We complained and they tried to clean it with a steam vaccum and it didn't help; it was dry already. Also, we discovered that the outlet where they used their vaccum didn't work anymore. Perhaps, the vaccum was faulty but I don't know for sure what the cause was. I asked them to at least replace the carpet and they refused. I am left with having to fix my carpet and investigate and fix the power. In the end, we feel that we shelled out extra money for a brand name that is supposed to provide quality work and were disappointed. We are still left with paint drops on outlets and wood that we are cleaning ourselves. Uneven lines, excuse for everything, speed drive. I would rather hire a small guy and watch him closely next time. Lesson learned! I posted photos of the carpet. I should have read all the reviews all the way down first. read more

While I had very high expectations for CertaPro's quality of service, I did not receive the level of service that I was sold. In my initial meeting with Graz Matutis (local geography lead), I explained my frustrations with prior painting companies and he assured me their level of quality would be far superior to their competitors. I obtained three quotes to have our main floor painted (1,800 sq ft) including all walls, ceilings, trim and windows. CertaPro was this highest quote but when I shared the amounts of the other proposals he decreased the quote roughly 10% to match the second highest quote I received which estimated 3 resources for 8 days. My issues started on the first day when Graz said three individuals and himself would be on-site Monday morning at 8am to get started. At 9am two individuals came and finally got started. The entire project took the team of two 5 days, an estimated 65-70 hours which was far less than the original estimate of a team of three for 5-7 days. Additionally, the crew did not apply a second quote of paint on all of trim and windows which they specifically agreed to do to match the other quote I received. The most frustrating part of the program was the lack of QA by Graz. He was a very good salesman on the front end and made a number of promises that were clearly not communicated to the team doing the work. Additionally, Graz spent a total of two hours at our property over the course of the 5 day project and typically only stopped in for a quick check-in with the team. All of the detailed quality review was left to my wife and I, as we spent a considerable amount of time reviewing the work throughout the job, marking spots that were either not prepped correctly, not prepped at all or not painted correctly including a lot of overspray on our walls, windows and fixtures. The team came back Friday afternoon to clean-up all of the mistakes made on the project however they were rushed and did not get to everything such as cleaning the excess paint from the windows, door hardware, etc. My wife was very frustrated with the amount of paint dripped onto our hardwood floors, windows and ceiling fan in our family room which she had to clean. When I brought these oversights to Graz's attention, in some cases, he was condescending and did not express the urgency expected given the number of issues noted. I contacted this company to get an estimate on painting my kitchen. They were courteous and were able to come out the same day for the estimate. The owner came and talked to me about the project and said I would get a estimate by email in the evening. I have yet to receive it, 2 days later. I called the office the morning after the estimate to let them know I hadn't received it, make sure they had the correct email, Nikki said she would have Graz get back to me or email me the estimate. Still no word! I can understand if maybe my job is too small, but have the courtesy to let me know or if there is another reason. Bad 2nd impression! read more
