While e-books are great for some; I still prefer sitting down and delving into a physical book. When you're looking for that hard to find book or something to bring you back to your childhood, chances are you will find it at Stillman's. Everything is neatly organized by category and you can easily lose time perusing the great selection they have on their shelves. I never leave empty-handed. There is ample parking out front. The staff are very helpful if you need a recommendation or have a hard time choosing if several books catch your eye. It's definitely a hidden gem in White Rock.

I love going to these kind of shops as its like a treasure hunt as you search through the shelves looking for gold. I was finally able to pick up one of the Discworld novels that I've been hunting for in bookstores across the GVA. The "coffee bar" is a laugh, and since they have it there, they don't let people bring in their Starbucks or whatever while they look around. They try to be "renaissance" by having music events and classes and suchlike, but they should probably just take a good hard look at their store and their selection and focus on being a good used bookstore.

Thankfully there are still 1 or 2 bookstores in beautiful White Rock. Yesterday, my stroll took me to Black Bond Books situated in Semiahmoo Mall. They have a great selection of books from best sellers to kids to history to cooking and the list goes on. They also sell a good variety of calendars along with a small selection of toys. The staff always greet their customers and make them feel welcome. If you don't see it on the shelves, they are more than happy to order it for you. After enjoying myself just strolling the aisles, I left with a book I've been looking forward to reading. With every book purchase, they always include a bookmark (no dog-eared books for me). They accept cash, credit and debit. There is parking in the mall parking lot. If you love to read as much as I do or have a reader in your life that you want to shop for, I highly recommend Black Bond Books.

So I was out this way and I had to go look in. I am used to large selection even at the local Black Bond but this place didn't really have much. Could be that it was a small location but it just felt lacking. The customer service was the good part of my experience here. Since I rarely get out this way I will more than likely never be back.

I recently moved to Bellingham and Village Books (and paper dreams) actually really swayed me to move here. Its a book palace, 3 stories of well organized selection. The front facing books are well chosen, and the used books are interspersed with the new books. There are quite a few staff picks sections, all of which are super interesting and worth looking over. Three days before Christmas 2025 I was there trying to pick out a horror book for a friend of mine. Horror is not my genre (more of a fantasy and literature gal myself), so I for sure needed guidance. The shop lady spent so much time reviewing the whole horror section with me . When we couldn't find the main book we decided on me buying, she spent the time looking everywhere for it. She enlisted the help of two additional staff members. When she was needed for another task, she made sure one of the other shop ladies had me covered. I ended up ordering the book, which came in a few days and they texted me when it arrived. Easy peasy! I will never forget that experince, especially as the store was jam packed with x-mas shoppers. Village books in fairhaven is the spot! My only note is that their bookclubs could be better. The bookclubs are during the day and don't have different genre selections (they are mostly nonfiction). There is a silent reading bookclub that I might try. They could be cultivating different types of communities (ie book clubs geared towards romantasy, sci-fi, literature, etc.), but maybe that will come with time.

The last part can explain why the vibe is just off. It just doesn't feel comfortable nor welcoming, and if I had to put my finger on the cause, I would say it is likely due to management. I witnessed firsthand how the store manager ignored customers in line waiting to pay because he was on the phone. You never ignore the customers who are right in front of you.
