With this review which is 100% genuine, I hope to reassure all mums and dads out there who would like to have their daughters stay in a safe, kind, warm, very affordable place in Manhattan and contradict that very unfair piece of review by Miranda below.
First, a little introduction: I am French, I speak 4 languages among them Spanish, I am 52, have two teenagers and currently work as a modern language teacher in Scotland. When I was 26, I stayed for four and a half years at Centro Maria and LOVED every minute of it. A Japanese friend of mine had recommended the place when I lived in Japan and was looking for a place to stay as I went to study filmmaking at NYU. I found in Centro Maria a place where I was safe, I made wonderful friends that I still have today, I got along so well with the nuns that I even stayed at Centro Maria as an adult guest for a few days last Christmas and I enjoyed very much the life we had there. First, the meals. B'fast was plentiful and simple, do not expect full cooked b'fast everyday though. Dinner is very good, well balanced, lots of veggies too and the fruit salads are freshly made, not from tins!! Last stay I was there, I even helped around in the kitchen so I saw that everything was made from scratch by the great cooks. When I arrived, I stayed in a room for 3 people, then had my own room for a few years and the last year I decided to be in a room for 2 with my best friend. The showers and toilets are cleaned every day! The place is impeccable, the nuns are very tidy and clean. In my time, they would bring the mail every night but it never was intrusive. Of course, they mostly speak Spanish but many girls speak only English and get along very well with the nuns. I had so many US friends who could only speak English and still were very happy there. They even learnt a bit of Spanish along the way.
I remember us creating a lot of little plays, shows for the different celebrations in the year: Halloween, Christmas, Easter... we were actors, dancers, directors, and we would create so many fun shows it was unbelievable! We had a amazing fun. These were my best years in NY.
I believe that fitting in a place depends on the attitude that one has. If you are nice, smiling, communicative, open, respectful of others, everything will be alright. In a residence like Centro Maria, the rooms are very close to each other and sometimes you need to share your room so guess what kind of qualities are going to be needed upstairs in the rooms and the corridors? Respect someone else's sleep, don't play your radio or TV too loud, don't scream on your phone, don't bang the doors, don't shout in the corridors to call people etc... is that unreasonable to you? If that is, then I guess you are not fit to live with people and need to buy yourself a whole house :-)
If those qualities are yours, then you will fit admirably in Centro Maria and like me, will spend the best years of your life there. Parents, your daughter will be as safe in Centro Maria as when she was in her mum's womb.
God bless and do not hesitate to contact the nuns for a visit.
