How did I live in Montreal for 9 years and not hear about this place once?…read more I am a food addict, no surprise there, but I am also an exercise addict and this gym located downtown on Peel just north of Maisonneuve has me hooked. Nice newish cardio machines, each one with their own cable tv, tons of group classes in 4 studios: dance, hot yoga, cardio, spinning. A pool, squash courts, a bistro, nice locker rooms, sauna and steam room and just overall really brilliant customer service and clientele. It is about double what you'd pay at Nautilus, but in my opinion it's worth every dollar. one of the best kept secrets of the city.

Club PKL is a very nice pickleball facility located in the sud-ouest near downtown making it one of…read morethe most centrally located , and closest to the downtown core, pickleball clubs in Montreal. The facility is very well lit, has high ceilings and a good amount of space around the courts. Again making it one of the best facilities around. They have 6 playable courts and one training court. Although they advertise having 7 courts, you can't actually play a match on the 7th court as it has a very low ceiling. However, this court is good for warming up or drilling. As I've mentioned this facility is top notch. However, one thing I've noticed after playing there a few times during the summer is that the main area is not properly ventilated. I can see that they have large heaters in the space so I'm sure it is fine in the winter, but it appears to lack an adequate amount of fresh air circulation. So when the facility is full the air becomes quite humid and hot. The office area and fitness studios are in a full air conditioned area so there is no issue there. It is just the playing area that seems to be lacking in fresh air and air conditioning. Lastly the one major down side with Club PKL is the pricing structure. It's next to impossible to figure out and what I can figure out seems extremely expensive. Looking at the Play by Point app, Club PKL offers no less than 11 membership options. ‍ when you click on memberships on their website all you get is a list of hourly court fees of $64 or $72/ hour depending on the time of day. So the website isn't really very useful in helping you figure this all out. The way it works is that you pay for a membership, say $110/month for then"rock star" membership, which I figure must be the best one and then you pay court fees as well. For a "rock star" the fees are the lowest, $12.50/hour/player (assuming 4 players per court). So by my calculations if you play on average 3 times per week it would cost you over $5,000 per year to play pickleball at PKL. They are however very flexible when it comes to drop ins for non-members. I've seen last minute open play invites for as little as $10 but also for as much as $35, so it all seems pretty random which makes it a bit difficult to plan in advance.

It's a great way to change your workout and fitness regime without taking any of it too seriously since it's not competitive but rather for fun and get you moving. Sign-ups are on the website and locations for games are announced there as well (it's usually at the YMCA in Pointe St. Charles) . The season goes for 12 weeks and costs about $125/person or if you already have a group of friends who want to form a team, registering an entire team is about $650. I played my first dodgeball game in over 20 years last night and was surprised and how quickly you break into a sweat just by running around in the gym. Recently they changed their pay structure to be biweekly. If you're regular price individual, it comes out to a little over $30 for two weeks, around $60 a month. The facilities are decently taken care of. Nothing is too messy and they frequently have cleaners going in and out of the change rooms. The studios are pretty clean and spacious (though some classes are PACKED, even if it's inside the gym.) the change rooms are okay, I've never had issues getting a locker before. There are a variety of classes you can take and all of them are fun! I've tried quite a few of them and I don't remember any being bad at all. The teachers are great and are bilingual. Because classes are often busy, they can't really focus too much attention to you during classes. However, they are always open to speaking with you after classes. With the Y membership, you also get 10 friend passes to use and 2 fitness instructor training sessions. You have to renew your membership yearly (no, it doesn't just roll over). Staff are extremely kind and helpful in the front desk as well.

An extra bonus that they have a "plus" change-room and I had access to that as well since that was part of my membership which they also honoured. There's certainly bigger Y's than this one - including the one in my suburban community. But bearing in mind that they're in the heart of downtown Montreal, it's still a pretty good size with a bunch of amenities. The gym area is on the top (3rd or 4th) floor, so I caught the pool, a couple studios, gymnasium and others on the way up. The gym was fairly well supplied and should have most of what you're looking for. I mostly just use free weights and a running track anyway which they had available. The plus change-room was really nice! Funny enough it was quite a bit bigger than my local one, though the rest of the facility is smaller. The provide towel service, carpeted areas by the lockers, a large and well-functioning steam room and a large whirlpool. Just note that you'll need to have your own lock. My Y has a system where you can leave your card in the locker in order to bring a key with you, but this one you need your own lock. I'm not sure how it works for the other change-room. Glad I made my visit here to get energized and make a small dent in burning the excessive calories I took in on my trip to Montreal. Staff were really nice and helpful too.
