I brought in a graded Queen Elizabeth coin that was still in its protective case, with its certificate/ticket of authenticity included. This was not a loose or unverified coin. It was preserved, documented, and in the same condition as comparable listings I later found ranging roughly between $300 and $600. I was offered $20. There was no real explanation, no breakdown of value, no discussion about the grading, rarity, or condition. Just a number. For a coin with documentation and verified condition, that kind of offer raises serious questions. I also brought in three 1 oz silver bars. These are some of the easiest items to price since melt value is publicly available. Even with a standard dealer margin, I expected something reasonably close to melt value. Instead, I was offered about $12 under melt. Not slightly under. Not within a typical spread. Just significantly lower than what anyone with basic knowledge of silver pricing would expect. At the time, I didn't have much experience with coins or precious metals. After going over everything with my husband, who is more knowledgeable in this space, and comparing current market values myself, it became very clear that these offers were not competitive in any sense. What stands out the most is the lack of transparency. There was no effort to explain how these numbers were reached, no attempt to educate, and no indication that the grading, authenticity, or condition of the items had any meaningful impact on the offer. I fully understand that businesses need to buy below market value to resell. That's normal. But there's a difference between a fair margin and an offer that's so far below known value that it relies on the customer not knowing better. If you are not already informed walking in, you are at a disadvantage. I strongly recommend that anyone considering selling coins or silver here take the time to research their items beforehand and get multiple offers. Based on my experience, that step is not optional. There are businesses that are transparent about their pricing and willing to explain their evaluations. This was not that experience.

The location is clean and the selection is pretty good for a more intermediate-size hardware store. It's also mostly consistent with the idea of shopping locally. Ace Hardware stores are operated as cooperative not a franchise, as such each local store has lots of control over design and profits. This location seems to always have some sort of philanthropy effort going on.

They're a great resource, and I'm thankful they're here for us. They keep on top of stocking, so empty bins are rare. Downside is they're expensive relative to larger, home-improvement type stores, but you can't beat the convenience. The liberal hours are a big plus, something rare in our small town. Floor staff is friendly and helpful... but the checkout clerks? I find friendlier, more personable clerks at the DMV. Clearly, they're trained to be cold fish, absolutely not deviate from the annoying script about the rewards card, and refuse to recognize regular, frequent customers. Seems a little odd (to me) because I rarely need the guys on the floor - I know the store nearly as well as they do - so the only contact is usually with checkout. Heckuva way to treat your profit.
