Ah...the good ol YMCA center. I mean what is there not to like about the Y. If you think about the concept of YMCA centers across the United States, you wouldn't disagree with me. First off the main goal of the Y in my opinion is to provide a safe and secure place for people of all ages and income levels to practice a healthy and happy lifestyle. They are not here to take your money like other corporate gyms. I mean ok, are there flat screens everywhere at the Y? No. Are there state of the art equipments at the Y? No. But what they offer is a strong sense of community and access to a gym for low-income families. Now more of the details about this particular YMCA, 1) OMG thank you for giving me a discount. Since I'm an Americorp member working for a non-profit they gave me a discounted membership. 2) I love their water fountains! I mean not just your straight out of the tap slimy looking water fountains. These water fountains are clean and most importantly provides cold drinking water. 3) Swimming pools! 3 pools in total, one inside, one outside, and a recreational one with a slide! 4) Free classes! Lots and lots of free classes! From yoga to body pump to cycling classes, these classes are BOMB! 5) Free exercise consultation and computerized system to track your workouts. 6) And my favorite reason why i love the Y is PICK UP BASKETBALL GAMES. Everyone wants to play and although there are little fights here and there everyone seems to have a positive attitude. Yea sure, you can't watch your favorite cooking show while you are on the treadmill and there might be a lack of workout machines. The YMCA offers a lot more perks then say your local Bally's or 24 Hr. read more

Looking at this place's Yelp page and photos make me reminisce the old days. I was a regular for 7 years!! My mom signed the whole family up for memberships because she thought I needed a place to socialize and play with other kids. This meant going to the pool every single day to practice swimming and maybe talk to the other girls in the locker room if I felt confident enough that day, or get to know those I shared the lane with. Later, I joined the swim team: the Central YMCA Mako Sharks(when I left it was the Pirates). I met two of the greatest best friends I've ever had on that team. Not to mention, Randy and Travis, my coaches at the time, were so sweet and motivational and made me the swimmer I am today. As I got older and took on new challenges, I noticed that the swim team was falling apart. The team that once built my speed and others' as well was getting crappier and crappier as my visits came to a close, though that more than likely has to do with the new coaches. It was truly heartbreaking to watch. The staff that I once knew and was so familiar with started to be more bipolar with me. Not quite sure if that was my fault, but it made the visits to the Y less exciting. It was no longer a place I could call my second home. I gave it three stars because this place is a place I hold dear to my heart. New locker room rule since September 2017: Girls under 12 cannot use the women's locker room, and they must use the mixed "boys' and girls' locker room. I am a mother of two girls. Now my girls and I can never take our swim suits off in the shower room behind the thin curtain, since there are men and boys all over the shower room. In this mixed locker room, you can also see naked boys 8 to 10 years old very often, since the shower curtains are so easy to move around and really not secure. We raised this issue to the manager, and the manager simply replied there are lots of people who greatly like this new locker room rule. read more

One of my favorite places in the world. Its where I would spend my summer days. I would get there and do cardio and lift weights. Then spend my days shooting hoops. Lots of games going on and lots of memories there. Very affordable. If you love basketball then this place for you. read more

I've been a member for about 7 years, and I love it! While it may be a bit more pricy than some other gyms, it honestly is worth every cent! Under this one roof are a LOT of activities. Something for everyone of all ages. Of course they have bikes, treadmills, elliptical machines, weight room, etc... But for your monthly membership they also include several types of yoga classes, pilates, ballroom dance, spin class, Les Mills workouts, Barre (if you take this elsewhere it is very costly, as are many of the other classes I have mentioned!), TRX, Basketball, aqua classes (daily!), indoor and outdoor lap pool, stand-up aqua on surf boards, etc... SO MUCH!! Seriously well worth a trial membership to see for yourself all it has to offer you and a family! read more

I've been a part of this Gym(on and off) since highschool (8 years ago) and I've had nothing but good experiences. I have had several gym memberships elsewhere and i can comfortably say this is one of the best when considering customer service. The morning front desk is great, I have never had any trouble when they are on the clock and if I do, they always manage to solve the issue. Albert has been there since I remember and he is very professional, understanding and knowledgeable. Along with the other AM front desk staff I have spoken to. I usually go in the mornings so I can't say much about the PM crew from experience. I still have yet to find out! read more

My kids have such an amazing time, every time they go to 123 Grow and Next Step classes. My oldest son took swim lessons absolutely loved it! I remember taking swim lessons here as a child and it's great that I can share that experience with my kids. The Kids Club is a really nice bonus, that's a child care service the YMCA provides while you hit the gym.The holiday themed event are a lot of fun as well like the fall festival. My husband and I were so excited to sign up for YMCA so we can start working out together, we have 2 little boys and they offer 90 minutes of day care a day. The first day we started we put the kids in their day care, I had no doubt my kids will cry ( I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old). We told the stuff that we will be in the pool, 10 minutes later one of the girls came to the pool to call us because the kids were crying, my husband went there set with the kids a little and went back to work out, after asking the girls not to call us if the kids are crying unless they are hurt or something happen to them. Few days later we came back put the kids in the day care and asked the girls again not to call us unless it's an emergency. An hour later we started walking towards the day care when we saw one of the girls coming to us telling my husband that the kids were crying the whole time. when we walked in the girl was talking in a rude way about us not realizing my husband standing right behind her. we took the kids and my husband went to talk to the customer service. They didn't really help and told him that the manager is out of town. The next day i got a call from them telling me that there is a 10 minute rule about crying, if the kids cry for more then 10 minutes they need to call the parent, I told her that I never heard of that rule and I didn't sign anything that say that. She recommended me to come with the kids and sit with them for a bit so they can get to know the stuff, I agreed and went in later that day. My experience was awful... first of all they had volunteers there, from what I understand people that work at a day care should have at least background check ( I doubt they did it in that case). Second I was sitting there for 30 minutes and not even one person came to talk to my kids or play with them. How do you expect kids not to cry when you leave them with strangers that doesn't even try and make an effort of connecting with them. I am canceling my membership and I am so disappointed! read more

My wife and I had our membership there since Nov 2007 and just cancelled last month. I joined for the pools and free weight room. Both are a nightmare now. Good luck getting a lane in the outdoor pool. The fast lane is the best because people actually swim laps in that lane. The other two are full of people that can't swim, walk back and forth, or wear a snorkel! Not to mention all the traffic that swims from the recreation pool into the lap pool. All this happens and the lifeguards stare into space! The free weight room use to be upstairs. It was large and had plenty of room and equipment. Now it is downstairs and extremely small. My breaking point was when I entered the free weight room and there was 5 other people working out in there. Where are we all suppose to work out? My wife frequently attended the classes. Again, the classes started off great nearly two years ago. Now the instructors are regularly late, the sound equipment doesn't always work, and most of the time you have to compete for a ball or other equipment. They closed the steam room in the men's locker room because there was sexual activity going on. That's not my problem. Send one of ten overweight trainers up there to patrol it every once in a while. Instead, it is closed for good. I could go on and on, but the Readers Digest version is: parking sucks, the building is old and often smells, the trainers need to do less training and more working out themselves, lifeguards need to show up on time Saturday mornings, the outdoor pool was disgusting before they resurfaced it, and for $85 a month they could open a little earlier so I could get a workout in before I go to work. So long Y - I won't be back. read more

Reluctantly dropped our membership about 10 years ago because of poor reorganization choices with a new layout. Rejoined this month because this Y has had major improvements in organization/layout, maintenance, equipment and staffing. Now the facility is really pleasant, clean and very well equipped. The members and staff are generally really friendly, creating a pretty good vibe for the gym. The only issues I see is that the free-weight room is a little cramped; but it's workable with some flexibility and patience; we really miss the steam room that was closed down about 10 years ago -- but that ship appears to have sailed; and some of the members seem to be really fond of complaining about trivial things (see the few bad reviews on here). All-in-all I give the facility an A, but only a B for the free-weight room. read more

this place isn't bad, but it definitely isn't the best either. i've had a membership for about 8 months now, and i still don't know the layout of the whole facility. i mean, i guess i could just wander around and figure it out on my own, but this really points to the number one thing this YMCA lacks: customer service. when i first became a member, i wasn't given a tour of the facility, or walked through any of the class schedules or given any sort of orientation to the place. also, i tried to take one of their spinning classes in the evening. it was NOT good, and has since then deterred me from taking other exercise class. i've taken spinning classes at Bally's, and was expecting something along the same caliber--a class where the instructor will walk you through the ins and outs of riding (ie--dont' slouch; push up with your legs, not your arms). instead, i had an instructor who just made us ride --some times faster than others--not to a beat, or anything, but just to a random pattern. i think i took quite an offense to how poorly this class was presented, and i have never recovered. i guess i can be quite east-coast judgemental. what i like about the YMCA, is the vibe at the YMCA is definitely more family friendly. all the cardio machines were recently updated (woohoo!), and they boast FitLinxx on many of their weight machines. they also have two swimming pools, and offer swimming classes that are pretty good. i guess when members need to pay extra for a class, they can provide good instructors. read more

So I've called here twice to get information on their programming. Staff is rude and generally not knowledgeable about their programming. I have an autistic daughter the loves water so I had questions about the pool. The Y is supposed to be a place that welcomes all people including those with disabilities. Instead of that I was told her swimming would be tested by someone with no experience with Autism telling her to do things (she's non-verbal) and if she didn't do them she would not be allowed in the pool/waterslide. Obviously I would't be leaving her alone there ever but if i'm with her and know her capabilities, why wouldn't she be allowed to do what the other kids can? The staff not being able to properly evaluate her abilities is not her fault. Taking her there and not letting her swim would be a punishment. No thanks, I'll take me kiddo someplace else. read more

This is the gym I go to when I'm home from college. My gym at school spoils me, with televisions built into the equipment and a smoothie bar. Though I don't expect the Y to build it's own Jamba Juice, it would really benefit from a few televisions in the cardio room. I have a local gym membership but every time I go the crowds seem to appear bigger and bigger. It is all a matter of perception is all I have to say!!! Are you grateful for ANYTHING, people? The negative reviews about smells and fat people and sassy youngsters at the desk and KIDS running around? Come on now. the Y is family based. I belonged to the Y in Jersey. Now I belong to the one on the Alameda. I love it. I AM ONE OF THOSE FAT LADIES IN THE POOL, young lady!!!! And at least I am getting out and excercising. I used to be young and built like a brickhouse, but just wait till you are 56. Anyway, the kids at the front desk are fun and I always make them laugh. I got a percentage off my membership because I was laid off. I love the outside pool it is wonderful. To see the kids laughing and going down the waterslide and the guards throwing water on them, and they scream; it is a hoot. I love being around people. And because I am 56 and overweight, you know what? Nobody pays attention! No one cares. And that is the greatest thing about the Y. read more

My son and I been a member of the YMCA almost two years now. I have visited a few location but this one is our home base. I joined this gym because it provides more than just a work out center. YMCA offers child care (90min)physical and educational class for all ages, group work out class as well as personal training. When you sign up as a new member you automatically get three free health and wellness sessions with a trainer. I opted to use them all as personal training session. Desiree was my trainer and she was super awesome! Really kicked my butt. I have also tried most of the group exercise classes they offer and I enjoyed them all. Yoga, body pump, body flow, trx and core conditioning are my favorites. There are 2 pools, one indoor and one out door. Indoor is for lessons and group classes. A bit on the humid side for me. Plus I'd rather enjoy the weather when we go swimming anyways. Out door pool is super kid friendly, mushroom fountain and very shallow entrance. There's a slide too! That's for kids who have passed the swim test only! Down side no eating by the pool which is a total bummer!! I get they don't want wasps but you can eat right outside the fence so it doesn't make a ton of sense to me! Oh well. We tried group swim lessons the first year we joined and I was not a fan. I actually stopped and still have a credit for one on one lessons when my son is ready. 123 grow in the small gym is my son absolute favorite! Physical play on fun equipment as well as circle time, stories, parachute play, bubble time and stickers. We also very much enjoy the reading time they have on Fridays. Class we do not enjoy, tumbling! Only went once due to the over crowded and chaotic nature. Way too over stimulating for my sensitive boy. It is a new class so hopefully they can work out the kinks. They recently have done an over haul of the gum and up grades work it equipment. Especially in the condition room! Better options for deads!! SCORE!! Over all I really like the YMCA the only reason I didn't give the full five is because it is a bit pricey and the hours could be better. Especially on weekends! Also the pool schedule during the summer gets annoying when closed during prime hours for swim lessons. read more

I love this Y! But you need to know this is a busy, family-filled place with lots going on. Pool: tons of kids -- especially on hot days. Lap swimming works in off hours. Don't expect to have a peaceful lap swim on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The staff--including lifeguards and swim instructors--work hard and keep calm even when they have to deal with challenging adults and kids. Group exercise classes: great variety and a full schedule to choose from. Lots of regulars so you get to know folks. Instructors are the best especially Lisa and Jenny. Great family activities and kids camps. Yup--the facility is aging. All part of the charm and community vibe at the Y! read more

This is a really good YMCA. Machines and weights are really clean, as are the shower room and locker area. I usually workout in the morning, but I've also have gotten some time in during the evening. Any time I attend, I can engage in the activities and stations that I desire. The staff at the front check-in desk are really nice. I would suggest to other staff throughout the facility to take their lead on how to engage with their patrons. read more

This facility is affordable, family oriented, and is a gym without the tools, if you know what I mean. There is a ton of classes offered, clean locker rooms, indoor and ourdoor pools, and they have a fit linxx system people swear by. This is a review for the adult swim classes. I am not ashamed to admit that I needed swim classes. Blame my parents for not making me learn when I was a kid but whatever. I am not afraid of the water, I'm just afraid of drowing. But who isn't? Anyways, I don't know how to tread water and I have no idea how humans can breathe while in water without gills. I have had other people try to teach me in the past, to no success because they were all friends and what not so really they had no authority to tell me anything. But I digress. . . I joined the adult swim class at the YMCA. Classes are twice a week for a month in the evenings and I paid $169 because I'm not a member. The instructor is awesome. Her name is Debbie and she's cool. The 1st day she wanted to see how bouyant everyone was (about 5 people in the class) and turns out, I'm not. I'm too "muscle-y" as she called it. Then she taught us how to kick and do the basic freestyle stroke. I got that all down, turns out I could swim because I knew how to do this already. But what I'm still having problems with is the breathing. I have not been successful in exhaling in the water. But Debbie is very encouraging and has been helping every step of the way. I asked her to teach me how to tread and she did show me the movement, but I'm too chicken to take it to the deep end to see if I can do it or not. One of these days. . . She also taught me the proper technique for a backstroke, which again, turns out I knew how to do already. Yay me. She will teach you whatever you want to learn as everyone goes as their own pace. I'm having fun though I'm dead tired after. I highly recommend the class and will probably take another series. They have better swimmers with another intructor at the same time so they split up the class according to your skill level. read more

I love this place. Even though it always "seems" crowded, I've never had to wait in line for a machine and I'm there at random times of the day. They offer an extensive amount classes, old school PE, Zumba,cycling,yoga, Pilates, core strength, meditation, swimming and even an into to belly dancing and several more that I just can't think of right now! They have an indoor and outdoor swimming pool, weight room, free weight room, basketball court, racquet ball courts, stretching room, and a cycling room, and they offer childcare while you are there! My children are grown so I'm not sure what they offer the little ones but I see them around giggling all the time and I've seen a few camps going on for them. I also love the fitlinxx. Maybe everyone doesn't get motivated the way I do but I love the reward system and I like being able to track how many thousands of pounds I've lifted for the day/week/month and total. Also, I'm striving to get one of those shirts. As far as customer service goes, I've only experienced the good! Everyone has been very willing to help and motivational. Oh! And the pools are actually heated to a nice comfortable temperature. The overall look of the place could use a face lift but it doesn't bother me so much when all I need is in one place and it works just fine and it is always clean. Just a final note! This central Y has its pros and cons! Majority for me and my family, it is cons... My two children are registered in their summer camp this year due to my job and how near it is, I just pray they don't have to encounter with any of the staff that has helped me thus far!! The customer service here is just awful. The membership department is flat out rude and impatient. I talked to Linda and she was helpful but other then herself everyone that I came across was rude and have poor customer service experience! Just one question for the Y... There is so many reviews here complaining of your front desk and general customer service, why are the same people still here? Smh! I just hope the summer camp staff and management are helpful and respectful! read more

I really like the YMCA on Alameda Ave. The family plan works well for us, my kid goes to the swim club, my daughter takes yoga, pilates or zumba when she is in town, my husband and I go to the cardio room. It helps us do activities as a family, like racket ball in the weekends. And they even have healthy living programs that are very good. I tried one of them and I learned many things that are helpfull to change habits. The staff is always there to make things easier for you and encourage you to attend. I love going to the YMCA. I appreciate the organization's commitment to the family. In the summer the pool is great to take the kids to. The mushroom waterfall is a big hit. I'm always pleasantly surprised to see someone I haven't seen in a while--the place is a real hub for the surrounding neighborhoods. I grew up going to the YMCA, so having one nearby is awesome. I spend most of my time on the treadmill and the bicycle. The staff is great about training newcomers on the equipment. Unless you are a woman or married with lots of kids, the Central YMCA is not for you. If you are single man without kids, the two women running this facility and the women who control all of the Silicon Valley YMCAs do not want you as a member. From the 1950s through the 1990s the central YM(Men)CA was run by men and was open until midnight, had steam rooms for men and those for women, and had a lot of weight training and other equipment and offered a variety of programs including those for children. It was very popular with men and women be they single or married with children. The focus was on fitness and getting in or staying in shape. Now the YMCA is run by women who closed down the steam rooms and who took out the spa and free weights in the adult men's and women's locker/dressing/shower areas and who got rid of most of the weight training equipment replacing them with stair masters and other passive (female friendly) devices which are crowded together downstairs near the lobby. If you are a man, your only real option is to play basketball; but only during the time periods the basketball court is not reserved for female activities. But remember: Children should be in bed by 9 PM, and they start closing down the YMCA at 9:30 on weekdays, and at 7 PM on Weekends. What if you want to lap swim? Forget about it. First off the pool area is filthy, and there are pools of dirty, black, filthy water all around the pool--and this is because of all the parents and kids in their street shoes who wonder about the pool area. Lifeguards eat food next to the pool, kids and parents bring food and drink, almost nobody showers before getting into the pool. Some people swim wearing their pajamas or gym clothes, pieces of debris float in the water. Ugh. Its disgusting. And smile because some parent may film you while you are swimming. Yes, parents wonder around the pool, in their street shoes, tracking dirt in the water, and filming their little darlings as they gulp for water in the lap lanes. For most of the day the pool is reserved for children who want to play in the pool, pregnant women and fat women who want to exercise in the pool, and for fathers and mothers and their children who just want to play. What about swim lessons? Sure, but the teenage instructors spend most of their time flirting with the female students. True, they do allow lap swimming for 45 minutes in the evening (and at odd hours during the day), but lap swimmers are crowded together in 3 lanes (which can have up to 5 people in a lane), and often one of the lap lanes are taken over by those who do not know how to swim including children who may have their father or mother walking along side trying to teach them how to swim and filming their progress. What are the life guards doing? Eating. Flirting with their boyfriends. Or staring off into space. Its ridiculous. Its no secret. The Silicon Valley YMCA's has been taken over and hijacked by women and they have been busily turning the YMCAs into a Chuck E Cheese where children and their parents can run amok and where YMCA staff consists of teenagers who receive no supervision. Want to use the stream room? They got rid of it. Want to use the spa in the areas reserved for adult men or women? They got rid of it. Want to work out with free weights. They got rid of most of them. Want to lap swim? Good luck. Want to have a place that is hostile to single men, and which is dirty and geared almost completely for children and their parents? Then the central YMCA is the place for you. read more

I've basically lived next to the Y the past 7 years, but hadn't set foot inside since I was a kid taking swim lessons here some 20 years ago. Finally decided to see what they had to offer since it is in walking distance for me. I used to belong to a no frills gym (just machines, no locker rooms,etc) and was looking for a change. The ability to have other options aside from machines (classes, swimming,etc) was attractive and I enjoy using the lap swim times in the pool to get a good workout. All of the machines I have seen are connected to the fitlinxx program (which will track your workouts). You log in when you get there and enter your user ID on each machine. What I really like about this is that on the weight machines, it tells you the machine settings and what weight your goal is. No need to carry around a log sheet. At the kiosk, or at home, you can review your workouts and get reports. I'm definitely seeing progress this way. Obviously, it is a very old building and they've improved parking and other areas. I'm personally not sure of their plans, but would be nice to see some of the areas cleaner and more modern. It's definitely not one of the preppier work out places, but has a great family friendly environment to it. I believe they do a great job with what they have. Overall, I've found everyone friendly and had great experiences thus far. I'm happy. read more

Great childcare! As a new parent, I'm so worried about who I let handle my baby.... Jenn and her team of caregivers are the BEST, and my little boy especially loves "Auntie Rosa" who snuggles and cuddles with the infants like they're her own. The swim aerobics classes are fun and cheerful- I've been in the pool since 6 weeks after a c/section, and I love the teachers of all the classes. I feel like I have a dozen Russian grandparents of my son now, we all enter the gym at the same time in the morning and they all coo and smile at my little guy :-). The classes are super easy or super hard, depending on how you push yourself. Yes, it's possible in a no-impact water class to get the heart racing- just jog FASTER, and use those styrofoam barbells to push more water! The locker room is super sanitary and always freshly cleaned so I'm comfortable taking showers and getting ready for my day after class here. The cardio areas are small, true, but if you take the power circuit class, there's always room for one more person, and the coaches are great at motivating people to push themselves to their limits in here as well. The swim lanes in the indoor and outdoor pool are not crowded at all from 8:30 to 11:00 am (if you're lucky enough to work part-time or flex hours like me!), and people are very nice about sharing lanes. Given I'm a total novice on the whole lap swim thing, but people have been gracious about sharing with me, and I know enough to stay in the Slow Lanes as I'm just starting out (although I overtake some of the very slow swimmers!). Can't say enough about how nicely this place is run for a non-profit. Compares very nicely to Golds Gym, where I was a member for....oh yikes, 10+ years! read more

This review is strictly in regards to their customer service, more specifically membership services. The regular admin are very limited to what they can or cannot do. Most issues or even questions must be escalated to the supervisor. The supervisor is never there, unreachable, and unresponsive. I've had an issue that only management can address and I've contacted and left messages 4 times now, over a 2 month time frame. To this very day, no response. read more

I registered my 6 yr old son for the soccer camp last week. Tuesday afternoon, my husband got a call from the camp saying my son was stung by a bee on the lip, and asking us to pick him up ASAP. Over the phone, we requested the teacher to remove the stinger so less venom can be released, but she refused, stating they could not help him in this way per company policy. It was surprising that a common sense best practice is not being followed in YMCA. The rest of the week we had to rearrange work schedule to take care of him at home, since his face was swollen like a pumpkin. Again, we understand it was not the camp or teacher's fault this happened, but the result would be so much different if the stinger was removed immediately. If this is really a YMCA policy, I'm curious as to why. If my son were choking or bleeding would a counselor be able to intervene? We paid for a five day camp, and not only did we receive half the service, but also our son suffered the unfortunate incident.
