I left Morro Bay in 2000. I lived in this "village" many, many years. And I went to Central Coast Music for strings and stuff. I even bought a used National double neck lap steel made in the 40's. Ed has owned and operated Central Coast Music for all this time, 40 years or so. Always great service, focused on the person, not the pocket. He recognized me when I came in the other day. He switched locations since I left, but it's still the same. So much has changed. The bank is a coffee shop, Mills is some health place. But Ed, is still here and everything is the same. Nice employees, but totally overpriced records. $150 for a zeppelin record that you can get elsewhere for $15. Found a mamas and papas record in the store for $115 and walked across the street to a thrift store and found the same record for $10. Seems like the store is making prices based off of what tourists will pay not knowing that they can get it cheaper elsewhere. The prices just aren't even close to market value. The instruments in the store were fairly priced however, but they didn't have anything unique in stock. read more

Want to know what kind of place this is? I'm in SLO at the Downtown Brew to play a show. We're opening for a popular band, and any musician knows when you're opening you are lucky to get a sound check at all. I'm setting up and I realize I have no tuner. Now, this is a real problem as I am playing in a duo with a brand new guitar which had not been set up yet, and needed pretty much constant tuning (not to mention the bypass quietness of the tuner) to get me through the set. I call my girlfriend at the hotel frantically, asking if my tuner may be in the car to, no avail. She races into action and says she will track one down (she's a good one.) She calls around to a few places, all of them closed. But she finds this place in Morro Bay, and the guy has an "emergency line" for musicians. An emergency line! We all like to think what we do is important enough to warrant local emergency lines, but this guy actually makes it a reality. Awesome. She calls and asks if she can buy a tuner real quick, and he asks her why the rush? And she explains the story. He says, well don't buy one if he has one at home, just borrow one. She rushes out to the guy's house and sure enough, he loans her a tuner -- no deposit, no collateral, just gave it to her and told her to drop it by the sho the next day some time. She even tried to foist $40 on him for the trouble, and he refused and just told her to wish me good luck at the show. Folks, what reason more could you need to support this guy? That's as cool as it gets. Are guitar strings a dollar cheaper at guitar center? Who cares? We could one day very soon live in a world without shops like this, and if we risk losing them to save a few bucks here and there then we don't deserve them. Me? I'm going to be spending my money at Central Coast Music every chance I get. read more

There are so many great reviews on here it almost seems a waste of time, but I make the effort because Ed always makes the effort. He is 100% there for his customers. I've purchased 3 or 4 guitars, a few amps, effects pedals, hundreds of sets of strings and various accessories over the years and I will always choose Central Coast Music first. Anytime someone asks me about buying a guitar I tell them to go see Ed. Why? Because I trust him completely. It really comes down to this: Ed is a musician who loves music and loves that others feel the same way. He encourages this by supporting musicians and aspiring musicians. He's not going to steer you wrong or try to sell you something you don't need. It's just a great experience to go into a music store and immediately feel welcome and comfortable and know if you have a question you'll get an honest answer, the same straight up answer he would tell a friend. I'm jumping on this wagon with 5 stars! *Batman voice*: "Its not the review they need, but the review they deserve." OK, been here twice, met Ed(?) I'm pretty sure, so freaking epic in just how he greets you even when it was semi busy, the dude oozes super rare charisma. This second time we met his daughter. She was nice, and handled the shop well. Customer service gets the 5/5. We checked out their humble supply of left handed guitars for my mother this time. I liked that they had entry level and intermediate electrics and acoustics to choose from. I already decided on a trophy guitar I WILL purchase from here should my mother follow through on learning. Its a beautiful Luna acoustic. Speaking of beautiful, they have plenty of Luna and Dean guitars to choose from, most of which were gorgeous to the point I didn't want to test run them! My own folly, I know. I'm still waiting for that ONE guitar that'll tie my heartstrings around my wallet so I can then leave broke and extremely happy. And I'm pretty sure that when the time comes, it'll be a Jazzbox of some kind. They have a good supply of hollow body and more importantly, cigar box guitars. It seems with some music shops nowadays, hollow bodies are few and far between, let alone having the chance to run into some quality diddly bows. They also had a cabinet full of pedals. So, customer service: check. Selection: check. Atmosphere: check. This is my favorite and now go to music store. I live 3 hours away. That should say enough. read more

I've been going to CCM for at least 15 years now. Being from the area, I didn't know how good I had it. If I needed something, I'd go see Ed. Never thought twice about it. Then, I moved away for a few years. No other music store I've visited, whether it be a mom & pop operation (not many of those left), or a Guitar Center type, has been as willing to help find what is best for me. Many years ago, Ed told me NOT to buy something from him because he didn't think it was what I was looking for in the long run. I was confused. Happy he's being honest, but not used to that in a music store (or any store, really). So, he ended up ordering a pedal we agreed would be best for me, I waited, and it was worth it. I discovered this place a couple of years ago while my wife was shopping in the neighborhood. It's a great store full of new and used equipment. The selection is modest but the guy who owns and runs the place is super knowledgeable, friendly, and very cool. He gave me some great advice on how to get the most out of my Laney amp, which they now carry. His prices are surprisingly very competitive to Guitar Center. Great place to shop if you are just starting out. Just wish I lived a little closer because I'd buy all my gear from him. read more

Stopped in to get some strings and to see if they would change the strings for me. They were fantastic! And the string change was inexpensive. But beyond the price, the customer service was outstanding. I felt like I made some new friends! They were down to earth with none of that too cool for you attitude that I've sometimes experienced at bigger stores (guitar center, for example, though I've also had some good experiences there). I will stop by this store whenever I'm in town, just to poke around and chat because they were that great! Several reviewers have commented on them being more expensive than guitar center. I think the cost difference is minimal and negligible when compared with the fantastic energy of the place. I will be doing as much business with them as I can. Truly a great experience! read more

The friendliest music store in the universe. I once moved there (to Morro Bay) because of Ed Frawley and his Central Coast Music vibe thing. I really did. Eventually I had to move back to LA (family), but this is without a doubt the coolest music store on the planet. You know it the moment you walk through the door - It just looks and smells right. They have a good selection of new and used instruments and gear, and Ed is the nicest guy ever. EVER. He's also Mr. Knowledge when it comes to guitars. "Hey, Ed! Look at this crusty old guitar I found in barn. Doesn't have any logos or markings on it. What do you think it is?" "Oh man, do you know what that is? That's a ... " Every time. He knows what it is. Never fails. He's a heck of a blues guitarist, too. I did repairs out of Ed's store for a few years. It was glorious. Only about 50% of the repairs were on guitars and basses, so I got to hone some skills on a wide variety of non-guitar but kind of related fretted, unfretted and sometimes maybe fretted what the hell is this something are you kidding me instruments. Ed has a great following because he treats everyone like they are his neighbor - as if he's known you for years. It's not just locals. You'd be surprised at some of the names that pop in there. Eyup. Ed is great! I've been shopping there for over 15 years, bought 3 gits and some pedals and a lot of strings (what can I say, I like to play aggressive when my tender side is on hold). In fact, cool fact, they have DR multi-colored strings and Eddie recommended I might like to get them in Red, White and Blue for my 82 LP Custom/black gold hardware. Really got some great looks! His 'policies with people he trusts are nothing I have ever seen in retail sales, which I have been doing for quite awhile. Nobody beats Ed's service and gen-u-wine caring about his people, i.e. customers. I've never given anyone higher marks, and he deserves it. I'd like to give this store a 3.5 (but I'm nice, so I round up). It has a fairly good selection and the man at the front was nice. It's lacking in more expensive instruments and tends to only stock the lower end (unless it's used). The only real negative about this store is that everything is covered in dust. This isn't that big of a deal, but it's always something that I tend to notice. The used gear, while not extensive, is always fun to poke around. read more

This is the kind of music store that you love to visit. The guy who owns it is super helpful and friendly. There is no snobbish "I'm a better guitarist than you" attitude. He welcomes anyone to pick up an instrument and freely play it. The store is crammed with all types of interesting music stuff and always has some very good used guitars for sale. When I asked about an amplifier, the owner gave good accurate info and even invited me to take it home and try it before buying it! This place has offered me the best music store experiences of my life. I am a hobby-casual kind of musician, but I play several different instruments and have had all kinds of experiences. I LOVE this place - they stock a lot of stuff, can talk to you about what you "really" might get - so you consider not just the option you came in thinking about but good (better, sometimes) alternatives. All I needed was polish. That's all I was going to buy, but when I saw this 12 string Ovation hanging on the rack I had to have it. I knew how much I was willing to pay and was ready to play hard ball with the owner. No need though, Ed accepted my first offer (far less than the asking price) and made the sale. He even incorporated the tax into the price and I didn't pay a penny more than I had offered. Even if I didn't need anything, I could spend hours there looking at the architecture of the interior of the building. If this makes sense - Ed didn't turn what this building used to be into a music store, he fit a music store into what this building used to be. You have to see it. read more

stopped in here while in Morro Bay, you know, just to check it out. WOW! i had no idea that there were such interesting and unique manifestations of the guitar and banjo. They have the usual, a heck of a selection, by anyone's standards, but then they have the unique; a banjo made out of a bedpan, a pay telephone guitar, Epiphone, Luna, Ivanez, Fender, you name it, they have it and in any configuration you could want. I wanted a certain type of electric guitar cord, the man had to go in back to get it, but he had it! What a wonderful place to visit and shop. i live far away, but will make it into this marvelous music emporium whenever I am in the area. read more
