So...we almost gave up on KOA until we stayed at this place. I'm not sure where to start: I mean, they deliver fresh made pizza and wings to your tent or RV door! The site are meticulously maintained. The staff is exceptional (special shout outs to Chuck, the owner; Reagan in the kitchen; and Bethany, who was always kind). The campgrounds is perfectly situated in the midst of a bunch of mountain towns (Idaho Springs, Central City, Black Hawk, Georgetown) , so there a ton to do in the vicinity. Know what you're getting: this is a hotel for which you provide your own roof; calling it a campgrounds is only slightly accurate. KOAs are really designed for folks who like the idea of camping, but don't want to camp. You'll get a fire pit, and some excellent, super dry firewood that makes for a really easy start, and you'll have a fully stocked convenience store steps away from your very clean campsite. What's more, the bathrooms are better than most hotel bathrooms! They're clean, with plenty of hot water, and the staff check them several times a day. We spent two nights here while exploring the greater Denver area. The staff was outstanding, and the facilities were clean and well-maintained. Although the tent sites are small and close together, they were still enjoyable. The drive to the site is scenic, and it's just an hour and a half from Rocky Mountain National Park. WARNING! Stay elsewhere! I have stayed at KOA's all across America while traveling and I am completely flabbergasted by this owners aggressive, crude, unprofessional mistreatment of customers. My husband and I have stayed here for the spring while in Colorado and mainly dealt with his son (which by the way is the nicest guy, very helpful and so are the other employees). Tonight I was taking my dogs out to go potty (whilst the owner was yelling, complaining about something nearby, we could hear him) and I went to bring my dogs in and get a bag to pick up after them, while walking back inside he rudely approaches me with "you gonna pick that up?", "yes" I replied, "I'm bringing my dogs in and getting a bag, I always pick up after them." We have a garbage can behind our grill outside the camper with our pets waste, you can see it filled with doggie bags. Anyway he argued with me and yelled "can't wait for you to leave!" I didn't feel right about him saying that so I went to the office to let them know that an employee just unrightfully yelled this to me. We've been here for 2 months, if you had any problems with us why wouldn't you let us know? He was clearly having a BAD day. So he was outside the office and shouted while waving his arms towards me "I'M THE OWNER, I'm not having this conversation and if you say ONE more word you're out of here!" We had plans to leave in a few days and we paid up for the week so I said "but we've paid for the week?", mind you it's 8pm at night. Even bystanders were standing in disbelief of his mistreatment towards me. He then stomped inside and brought me a receipt for a refund for the week and told me to be out by 11am. We've stayed here for 66 days with 4 days left and he kicks us out because he's angry for no good reason? Absurd I cannot believe anyone would treat a customer this way especially in front of his employees and other customers. I would not recommend staying here and giving this man any business. I'll also be in touch with KOA corporate to make them aware of such volatile ownership. *P.S. I now see other reviews from the exact same type of mistreatment and behavior from this man, specifically towards women (surprisingly more belligerent abuse than my interaction with him). This is one of the top 4 KOAs in the Nation, not opinion this is fact. They have very clean facilities and friendly staff. I feel very secure staying here with my family. They offer $3 pancake breakfasts, and pizza for delivery every night. There are two hot-tubs on site and the staff was very informative on activities in the area. They have a nice big rec room from relaxing and crafts, I love being able to spread out a bit after being in our rig. Each site has a table and a homemade fire ring, which we used every night. Now to address the drive...yes it is mountain driving at its best, but I saw plenty of big rigs in the park so would guess they make it up the steep hill just fine. Although what I was told was they are opening an on and off exit at the top of the Central City Parkway...so this should solve all the driving complaints. The views from this campground are breathtaking, and the stars at night are amazing. This is our go to spot for a vacation, in the foothills. read more

I'm sure this experience would have been better for those with an RV since all you need to enjoy yourselves are hook ups. For those of you who are using a tent, don't bother with this location. They have a few tent sites with electric hook ups, and those are tucked back in a few trees (literally, a few) behind the office and behind the cabins. For those who opted for the non electric, you arrive and are pleasantly surprised by a wonderful tiny gravel lot with your campsites. Each camp site comes with a fire pit without an attached grill. There is only one grill for the entire "tent city" as they call it. On top of that, you cannot nail your stakes in all of the way because, surprise, there's cement beneath it. The office told us to put rocks in our tent so it doesn't blow away. Luckily we were just on a cross country trip and only stayed here for two nights to check out the area and shower. The hot tubs were nice and the showers were, for the most part, clean. There was a broken one in the women's room, but I'm sure they'll probably fix it eventually. I also never got a confirmation email for my reservation, even after re-confirming my email twice with the office. So, if you love to tent on gravel and have a view of a main road and another gravel lot right beneath the tent site, while looking at all of the area that is nice, pretty, and green, right next to the campground...pick this place. read more

we stayed here last week. the campsite was an okay time, too close to some of the mountain side apartments though. although the pizza (keep in mind I have 0 food intolerances) gave me hard-core food poisoning and my wife felt very nauseous after eating the wings. This was quite literally the only reservable camping location 2 nights ago within 30 minutes of the front range or all along it. Among the options we had, this place was certainly the best. I actually didn't even know what a KOA was until Friday, mostly because I'm far too much of a hardass to stay at a place that asks you "do you need a site with electricity" when you book. My idea of camping is typically more bowie knife, case of beer, and one individual in the group that everyone feels comfortable eating in a dire situation. At some point during the night, a guy came up and said we needed to dial it down. I promise you, the dial was already really low (think stock Honda Accord at a car show). He really did handle it well, but I couldn't figure out where we had gone wrong. I was playing (again, at a low level) The Temptations, Earth Wind and Fire, The Isley Brothers, you know, old people music. I thought it would make the 10:00 sleepers within earshot happy, but some people's hearts are deep chasms of dark nothingness in which no enjoyment or pleasure may exist; a hollow, lifeless carapace of sadness and misery; a barren wasteland of despondent presence that seeks nothing beyond the sufficiency of mundane continuance in a life void of meaning. Golf cart dude came in yelling at me because I parked in the wrong spot when checking in. Said "no one is going anywhere until he moves his RV!" and pointed at me. I had been parked there for two minutes. I didn't know where to park because all these broken down fifth wheels were blocking the way. I couldn't block the through traffic lane so I had to pull ahead of everyone. Thirty seconds later after checking in, lady went on radio and called for an escort to my spot and grouchy dude responds well he's just gonna have to wait his turn! Then I step outside, all the RVs are gone, fifth wheels and all. They all easily got around me. Never staying here again with such rude staff. Read other reviews about the owner so this must be the owners son who thinks he can yell at people. I think I know where he learned it from. This kind of behavior is not commensurate with KOA ownership, and I think they need to have the KOA name pulled from this establishment. I really enjoyed staying at this KOA. I was on a cross country road trip and actually got stranded for three nights due to car trouble. The staff was extremely friendly and accommodating when we needed to add on extra nights last minute. It was refreshing to receive such warm hospitality. We spent two nights on a tent site with electricity that were private space and great for a nice relaxing fire at night. We also spent one night on a non electric site which was also great and easy to set up our area. Since our car needed service, we didn't have it with us and the staff was pleasant and willing to help us whether it was a shuttle ride to town for food and supplies, or allowing us to keep that food in the rec area to avoid bears. This campground is run by a family and it adds such a nice touch to the overall experience. The location of this campground is ideal up in the Rocky Mountains! The scenery was gorgeous and there are trails for exploring. I would highly recommend this place for anyone looking for a gorgeous place to stay with a great staff! read more

This was first KOA we've ever visited as we are not a member but gave it a try what a disappointment. The site I wanted was fully booked so started searching online found this, clicked the book online tab, rate was $42.55 a nite plus taxes since this wasnt exact location I wanted I continue my search with no luck I went back to KOA site now price jumped to $46.95 a nite not sure why anyway booked 3 nites came out to be $149 n some change. Oh, thought I selected pullthru but it was pullin I asked if she had any pullthru left she said no and stated our site has the best view. well the view was nice but the wind was horrible, we were facing the valley so we were wind barrier for them. KOA didn't offer any local attractions or maps, all sites I been to always offer them. The girl told me I need to find a visitor center to get them. Lastly, this site isn't RV friendly to drive to. Too many hills, the right hand turn in town was almost impossible for a big rig towing vehicle to make. read more

The approach is not for the faint-hearted, especially if you are in a big rig. You can see the site from the top of the parkway but don't be fooled - you must carry on and make a steep descent and ascent to reach the site. Fuel up before you head here. Once you've made it the place is absolutely beautiful. They have 2 hot tubs and take orders for pizza and wings that are delivered to your site. Make sure you book ahead - we saw many people turned away because it was full, which must be dispiriting after the journey up. read more

One of the few campsites with full facilities - so that was nice. Really surprised with the lack of showers in campgrounds in the area. Facilities were clean, well maintained. Laundry was a plus. They have a nice little souvenir shop where you can get basic supplies. I was not happy with the WiFi service however, it was very slow. You're right on top of a huge hill, the climb is very steep so beware. We were towing a trailer with a small car and almost didn't make it. The views were OK. The campsite itself left more to be desired, you're very close to other campers, and it's right by a playground. You're also right next to the main highway into town, so a lot of noise. Also very hot in the summer, no tree cover. I can see the appeal for RVers, but for tent campers, lot of inconveniences. I would expect more considering the price. They do offer a pancake breakfast for $3 and also have pizza onsite that they deliver to your site. Both were actually pretty good. Overall, it's a nice place to camp because of the facilities, but definitely could use some improvement. read more

We got stuck in Denver due to snow and could not find anywhere to park our rented C class RV in town. Called up these folks and they were fine with us pulling in late, took reservation on credit card. Really nice facilities, clean, well taken care of showers, laundry, and two hot tubs. Sad to have to hit the road in the morning, and that the weather didn't let us see what look like amazing views. Also great gift shop, very friendly staff. I was nervous to come here due to some negative reviews regarding the owner. Although, I did not have a personal encounter with him, I did see him and he makes zero effort to be friendly and welcoming. I probably would not have noticed this had it not been for the reviews. We are new to the RV world and stayed at this KOA for our first two times out. I would definitely equate the KOA to some of the nicest Holiday Inn hotels we have stayed. They are pet friendly and have all the hook ups needed. The staff is sooo friendly! We ordered wood and rented a propane gas firepit which they quickly delivered and the firepit came with the propane. They have a shop with gifts and necessities as well as a dog park, playground for kids, etc... the sites on the perimeter are very nice. Everyone who has been around us each time has been very respectful and not too noisy. It's great to get away from the city but not have to go too far. read more

Day 3 Noticed over the 3 day here that there is no restriction on any type of dogs. I am a dog lover and we have one of our own that is always with us when we travel. But seeing several of the aggressive dog breeds on our walks with ours makes me nervous when they jump out at us. I am postings our stay here 3 nights. Take a look at my reviews of this place to get a picture of what i see. Just my opinion. Pored rain this afternoon our site is totaly under water. The 3 pull thru sites on the end are flooded due to very pour poor drainage. And they get a view of the parks employees rigs and dumpy storage area. This view is not on there web site where they show the pull thrus. Very muddy down here due to poor grading and no rock to help the flooder areas. Leaving today. Our stay here could have been very enjoyable if the the front desk check in person would have had at least some C S training and could use the crap computer system that many RV parks use. If you are staying 3 nights and there is only one site that there systems shows that is open for 3 that's what you get. I have seen several sites that were priced the same in great location that were used by one nighters. They come in late and leave early so there site is not the place they are trying to enjoy for 3 days. But due to the system if you are staying any length of time you can not have any of those sites. This is what we see in a lot of RV parks. The owners have a computer system to schedule a site. They give you what ever comes up. And then we see employees who are trained and give you the best site for your rig and family when you arrive. Differences here training. read more

Buyer Beware! This KOA is the worst KOA we have ever stayed at. The employees are rude (especially the young man behind the desk), the campsites are overpriced and the environment is cement pads, security cameras and rules posted on every other tree. (No free coffee either like some of the other nice KOAs). It felt as though we were spending the night on someone's driveway. Sewage hookup for RV next to us was right next to our fire pit! Also, RV next to us, as well as other RVs in park, had motion lights on their RV going off all night long lighting up their site as well as surrounding sites. Do yourself a favor and play at some of the casinos in town and earn a free luxury hotel room for the night! This KOA is not worth the bother. read more

I got here on a Monday, and booked for one night to try it out, and make sure the weather would hold. I am an avid camper/ hiker and decided to ditch the hotels while waiting for the house I was purchasing to close. I've been trekking the outdoors with my young daughter since she was 7 months old. I met a couple who the owner was letting tent at a campsite in exchange for work who were very accommodating, and helped me pick out a nice site behind the main building that had plenty if cover, should incremental weather occur. I have a good set up worked out, through plenty of experience, that keeps her and I happy, dry and warm. This KOA site isn't the best I have been to. I'm a member, and I've stayed at others that were much more developed and weren't as bare. However, I thought given the fact that is set up a fairly nice camp and my experience so far, is book through the following Monday the next morning. An older woman behind the counter who has a pretty bad smoking habit told me every tent site was booked. Let me tell you, it was pretty empty. I pushed her on that, and she said every tent site where I was at was booked, and I could move to another tent site, like the family tent area (which has no cover and is open to the elements...this place is on top of a hill at 9000 ft), and then suggested another tent area near the RV's. Basically, they're tent areas were not booked. She tried to claim that people had personally reserved the tent site where I was. I'm calling BS on this. It is my firm impression that she saw me with my kid, didn't approve, assumed we were noisy (we're not), and thought I was a bum. She figured she would make it difficult based on some lame excuses and situate us "more appropriately". I am anything but that, and hate this KOA for not simply leaving us at our tent site for the week we WOULD have booked and WOULD have enjoyed like normal campers if she hadn't decided to be silly about it. I consider this KOA unprofessional, backwards and, especially compared to other KOAs, not that great. Yeah, they've got a hot tub, and the bare bones of a site, but Idaho Springs just down the road has the Indian Hot Springs AND you can RV or camp there, too, if you don't want a room. There are plenty of other places my money's going in the future for this area, and it's not here. read more
