A young, not very experienced "technician" performed a $9 annual A/C tune-up (Home Depot Christmas…read morespecial). Since it was cold in January, the refrigerant "fail" could have been caused by a malfunctioning part and NOT a LEAK. I was quoted a RIDICULOUSLY HIGH $1,200 for a Dye Leak search (plus $380 for a refrigerant recharge and balance). [To exacerbate what I believe is dishonest business practices, they quoted me $626 for a Surge Protector (Condenser Only) and $1,170 for the Condenser and Air Handler!! The problem is I have a WHOLE HOUSE surge protector that I paid about $100 and had a handyman install in less than 15 minutes!! The surge protector is visible when looking at my outside electric meter...hooked up on the bottom of the electric panel.] When Florida Breeze came out in Feb., they indicated because it was too cold, any testing on my Variable Speed Heat Pump unit could be tricked/influenced by the weather and provide a misdiagnosis. When Florida Breeze tested on April 2nd, they determined there was a defective part that was preventing the refrigerant from flowing through the unit. They ordered the part. (They also said it would be less than $500 for a dye leak search and refrigerant.)

We called Alden (for the first time ever) on Friday, December 22nd to come out and look at our hvac…read moresystem (which had stopped coming on earlier that morning). Alden was very responsive and had someone there within 2 hours. After spending about 30 minutes diagnosing the issue, the Tech said that there was a loose wire going to the thermostat. He (apparently) fixed the loose wire (the heating had finally come on). He then offered to sell us a Service Contract on our overall hvac system. We declined. He went to prepare his invoice for today's repair of the loose wire. Alden charged us $89.00 for the service call and an additional $69.00 for repairing the loose wire. A few days later (this morning) the hvac system stopped working again (it was acting the exact same way it was the prior morning). We contacted Alden again and they sent the same tech (along with what appeared as a more senior tech along with him). They determined that the thermostat itself now needed to be replaced. Alden quoted us $377.00 to replace a (readily available) $30.00 thermostat. Alden made no mention to provide an explanation why it was going to cost $377.00 to replace a $30.00 thermostat ($377.00 is higher than any cost-range estimate that you can find online - the actual time to replace a thermostat is around 30 minutes). Alden also offered no reasoning or explanation why we wouldn't be due some credit for the $158.00 we just spent with them for repairing a "loose wire" just a few days earlier. If you add it all up, Alden must have thought it was reasonable to charge us a total of $535.00 (over two visit for what ended up being a bad thermostat. We are reasonable people and do not mind paying for good service. In this case though, either Alden doesn't care about what their customers think of them or Alden isn't fully aware of how any of this looks from the customer's point of view. The service techs offered no logic or reasoning whatsoever why we should pay the full charge from the "loose wire" repair PLUS pay an unreasonably high $377.00 charge to replace a simple thermostat. We are writing this just to warn people about the potential pitfalls of working with Alden. Update: 12/26/2017 @ 1:56 pm We just had an independent hvac repair technician come out (we called him after I replaced the thermostat myself). I replaced the thermostat myself (which Alden said was bad and needed to be replaced) - i bought one at Home Depot for $24.95 plus tax and it took me about 35 minutes to replace it. However, replacing the thermostat did not change anything - the hvac still didn't come on. The independent hvac tech came out and identified that the AC drainage overflow safety switch was what was causing the hvac to not turn on. He bypassed it for today and will come out to replace that tomorrow. His service charge was $39.00. He also indicated that if the thermostat was actually bad (which it wasn't) it shouldn't have cost more than around $155.00 to replace the thermostat (that Alden wanted to replace for $377.00). Buyer beware. Also, I will happily recommend the independent hvac tech (after he is finished successfully replacing our AC drain safety relay). Thanks, David

My poor wife was sick and I made an ice fan for her with the help of a YouTube video, but, there was one (1) BIG draw back though, you had to either drain the melted ice or replace the frozen water bottles every hour!!! NOT the greatest solution, but, fortunately, Ronny of ALPINE Air Conditioning & Heating in Arlington, Texas came out on a SUNDAY and refilled the coolant that we needed so badly!!!
