Emergency Care (and some Follow-up Care) -…read more NOTE: I have a lot of Good Things to say about CDH ("Central Dupage Hospital", they seem to call it!), and a few Bad Things to say, as well. In the final equation, the "goods" outweigh the "bad", and leave me with 5 stars. My Health Issues are my own, and not the Hospital's. I have taken this into account. I will also reference comments made by other Reviewers... and I will not judge your own opinions, but only the comments others made. Let's acknowledge - right up front - that Hospitals are ALWAYS understaffed. After all, who in their right mind would want to deal with people like me, or are writing negative reviews on Yelp, whining and bitching about their Entitlements? And do this for an entire Career of 12 - 14 hour shifts? Not me, bucko. I went to CDH ER after visiting the Warrenville Urgent Care Facility, for a *severe* nosebleed. As I near the end of my Tenure on this miserable planet (whose Joys are compounded by His Awesome Puissant Orangeness and its Clown Car Administration), I've seen a lot of things - but NEVER a nosebleed like this. Think of a fast-dripping faucet, just shy of a constant stream. It literally scared me. My Bride and I worked at home for 10 hours trying to stop it, and could not. So, we climbed in the truck. Warrenville Urgent Care took a look, and recommended we go to CDH ER. We walked into the ER. Warrenville had obviously called ahead - the nice ladies at Reception saw us, and motioned me toward a waiting gurney and Nurse. There was zero wait time. Fast-forward 4 hours of serious effort by the doctors and nurses and a couple of what they call "Rhino Rockets" stuffed up my snout, and we had it quenched. We agreed that the Probable Cause was "Eliquis", a blood thinner recently prescribed to me to combat another Health Issue as I crawl toward the grave. A blood vessel had ruptured in my schnozzle. But there was also a collateral concern - I had lost so much blood during those 14 hours (circa 2 liters, we "bevnap estimated"), that the Doctors wanted to monitor me awhile. My Hemoglobin level was 7.1. So they admitted me, with my agreement. The ER Experience? Check, check, and check. No issues, professional, courteous, and caring. Up to the Second Floor, Cardiac. In Cardiac, the Doctors, Nurses, and Assistants came in and introduced themselves. I spent the next 4 days there, and reflecting on the experience, I have very few complaints. I'll list 'em below if I have room, or in a follow-up post. But overall, they took very good care of me. The Cardiac Experience? Check, check, and check. No issues, professional, courteous, and caring. I'd like to personally thank Nurses Josh and Isabella, who looked out for me over several lonely night shifts - I was insomniac, and if I slept for the next three days, I really can't remember it. But, hey: this is a review of the ER, so let me tangentially address some of the Yelp comments I saw: * "The problem with most ERs is under staffing." - Yes, indeed. That's called economics. Nearing the end of my life, I can't say I've ever found a solution, except to stand up for yourself where needed, and don't make a fuss if the issue is triaged-out. * "They know how to spend on remodeling" - Yes, indeed. I would also venture the opinion that *this is the best-looking Hospital I've ever seen" *. And, why should they not work to make their Facility as attractive as they can? Construction workers are not Doctors, and there is a shortage of Doctors. * "No one came to check on me with any regularity." - Yes, entirely possible. That's why there's this widget attached to the bed with a "Call Button" on it. This comment suggests a 'passive approach' to one's own Health Care - waiting around for things to happen to you. Enable yourself. * "Ran test and wanted to run more." - Yes, indeed. Corrective process for sacs of meat (e.g. Humans) follows a procedure where you must wait and observe the outcome of the last action . * "They nickel and dime everything." - Yes, indeed. That is the current state of the American Medical "system". Vote to change it, sir. And, to punish the Orange. The Bad's? Well, I took a look at my own notes, and nothing was important-enough to bear mentioning. I'll call-out a few, just for drill: * Their signage (Facility-wide) is abysmal, and does not support a first time visitor. * There's a Valet available to help you park your ride after arrival. You'll never see him, due to the poor signage. Now I am approaching the end of my Character Count (as well as my Life!!), so let me stop here. But please keep in mind - these are people who have devoted their entire lives to helping people, undergoing the strictest training of which I'm aware, and working shifts that exceed what I would EVER consider putting up with myself. Can they make mistakes? Sure! But give them the grace to be human every now and then, and question them if you see an issue. Stick up for yourself. Peace.

I eventually had to specifically ask a staff member to clean the blood off my finger and my hand. Neglect of Pain Management: I was never brought any form of pain medication during the entire visit after asking for it. When asked about this, I was told that maybe it would be brought to me when I was discharged. Failure to Provide Basic Comfort: I was forced to ask for an ice pack to manage the swelling and pain, which was not proactively offered by the nursing or medical staff. I then had to ask for another ice pack after the first one was no longer cold. Absolutely horrible, horrible, horrible experience. Do not go here for any emergency services!

I called another hospital 6 miles away and got right in - bloodwork, urine analysis, Doppler, ultrasound - it was night and day and my baby is okay. I DO NOT recommend Rush Copley and warn others NOT to trust that they will take care of you because they will not.

Hospital staff were emotionally abusive to the patient IN THE PRESENCE OF THE FAMILY. I shudder to think how our loved one was treated when the family was not around. I believe that this standard of "care" would not be allowed under the Geneva Convention for prisoners of war! After transferring to a different hospital, much more compassionate care was immediately evident. Moreover, the doctors at this second hospital had far more theories of the case and considered at lot more potential treatments than Rush Copley physicians. Ultimately, the physicians at the second hospital figured out the medical issue very quickly, while Rush Copley never did in a lot more time. I am no medical expert, but I think all of this might mean that the Rush Copley Hospital was medically incompetent, if not negligent. Don't let your loved one--or even your worst enemy--check into the Rush Copley hospital! Go to Delnor or Good Samaritan hospitals instead. Both are highly rated and have been great experiences for our family over the years.

Even though I had already seen several doctors within the practice over the years, they assigned me to a new physician who seems to demonstrate a real lack of genuine care for patients. I asked to switch to a doctor I already had an established relationship with and was flat-out denied. What made this even more frustrating was that I had recommended this doctor to other family members, and they had also become patients there. Yet I was told that because they had not seen the doctor within the last year, they were no longer considered active patients. This was during 2023, as the pandemic was winding down -- a time when many people still were not scheduling routine visits unless absolutely necessary. Every visit now feels less about healthcare and more about being sold something whether it's the latest vaccine or a new diet drug. What should be a simple refill for blood pressure medication has become an exhausting process. Every refill turns into, "You need to come in for another checkup, physical, or bloodwork several times a year or we won't refill it." Yet during the physical itself, I was warned not to discuss anything beyond the physical because that would require a separate appointment, and another copay. Communication is equally frustrating. If you need help with a prescription or pharmacy issue, there are multiple phone numbers to call, but nobody seems empowered to actually help. The standard response is, "I'm not part of that team, but I can send them a message." Meanwhile, the pharmacy never hears back and this is with Walgreens, not some small independent pharmacy. The office used to feel patient-focused. Now it feels cold, fragmented, and transactional. At this point, the patient feels more like a nuisance standing between EE Health company and extracting as much money from insurance as possible.

She and her team of residents were wonderful! I have an unusual condition, ME/CFS. In the past, I've been afraid to go to hospitals for fear they would force me to do things that would make my unique health problems worse. Few doctors understand my condition. Dr. Tieman listened carefully, collaborated with me, and advocated for me. I felt safe and seen. My surgeon, Dr. Jaclyn Wierzbicki was also terrific. I was there during a busy weekend and she had back-to-back surgeries. Despite that, she stopped at my room at the end of her long day to reassure me about the surgery scheduled for the next day. My surgery was laproscopic which is usually less painful, but I feel she did an unusually good job. The pain was mild and lasted for only 3 days before I felt much better. I only took Tylenol twice, and I am someone with a low pain threshold. My anesthesiologist, Dr. Pan, was also great. I've had trouble with anesthesia in the past because I am unusually sensitive to medications. He listened carefully. I don't know what he did, but I had no effects except for a slight feeling of nausea the second day. When I looked into the eyes of a Delnor doctor, I saw high intelligence and deep caring. There was little doubt in my mind that I was being cared for by the best the profession has to offer. The nurses were amazing! I've nominated two of them for Daisy awards. Every person I encountered was friendly, skilled, and made me feel like an honored guest. I am a quiet person not usually comfortable in group settings. Northwestern Delnor made me feel as comfortable as I do at home! Each person I talked with - from aides, techs, nurses, residents, and doctors told me that Northwestern Delnor treats them very well. I know that many large conglomerate hospitals these days are so profit driven that employees and even doctors are treated like interchangeable parts. Many hospital employees I personally know are just waiting for the clock to run out until they can retire, find a better hospital, or change careers. They work under so much stress. Northwestern Delnor treats their people well and it shows. At times I almost felt like I was staying at a nice hotel. There are blanket warmers along the corridors. Whenever I felt chilled, a warmed blanket was wrapped around me. These small touches had a way of making me relax. I have no doubt the kindness and safety I felt had a positive impact on the positive results of my surgery. In the past, I have been afraid of going to a hospital. After this experience, that fear is gone. Northwestern Delnor is like a safety net that brings me peace of mind. After years of fearing hospitals, it's hard to even say how much the care I received means to me. I am so grateful!

I would have recorded them doing this to me but I didn't get discharged from the ER. I had surgery after being in the ER about 4 hours. I stayed 3 nights in the hospital.

She was in the ER for over 24 hours before being admitted. Unfortunately for the ER staff, they were understaffed on a busy weekend. She was admitted with an unknown condition. The physician staff, which are brought in from other hospitals like Edwards and Northwestern because tbey don't have their own, we all AMAZING. The nurses, CMA's, CNA's, physical therapy, speech therapy staff, even the housekeeping staff, were all incredibly caring and kind to us. My mother ended up having West Nile. She was in for 2 weeks, we almost lost her. Dr. Ines Casey was her infectious disease doctor was with us every step of the way. After she was discharged to a rehab facility she had to be readmitted again, only this time she was closer to Edwards Hospital. It was like night and day, her 2 weeks stay there was terrible. No one even wanted to understand what had happened to her or what she went through. They thought she was just some old lady with dementia, which couldn't have been further from the truth before West Nile. But we lucked out when we realized Dr. Casey was on staff at Edwards and was asked to see my mother. She then explained to doctors and staff her condition. I just wanted to thank Mercy's staff for all they did for us. My mom is now almost back to her normal self. I know Mercy use to be a non for profit and now it's owners are for profit.
