I admittedly walked past this place many times without actually realizing what it is. It looks half…read morelike a castle keep, with a super modern shell attached to the back. It wasn't until the summer when I noticed all the people drinking outside that I realized it was a bar and restaurant! The inside is an equally odd mix of old mixed with very new. It's a Samuel Smiths bar which means they offer up a unique mix of reasonably priced beers. My bloke was recommended a 'Man in a Box', which tasted better than its name would suggest. I opted for a lovely cider. The menu didn't temp us, especially being a little more expensive than we would normally pay. Nice enough place for a quiet, relaxing drink especially in the summer, but not really anything special.

The upsides are: As I said can have a quite drink and get served hassle free. You can play board games as they have quite a few behind the bar including Monopoly and Scrabble. They have a lovely outside area where you can either sit at a table or on the lush grass in the summer. They have speciality beers. The downsides are: They have speciality beers - some people will see this a good thing but I can honestly say I have never tasted a beer I like here. It can be a bit pricey. It can lack a bit of atmosphere if its too empty.

This is probably my favourite bar in Cardiff bay…read more One of the reasons for this is because most people do not regard it as a bar (more a coffee shop) and it is therefore never over run unlike the bars over the other side of the bay like Salt and Terra Nova. Sitting inside is very pleasant as are the staff, especially the manager, who I think i called Hugo but to me its big selling point is its outside area. It over looks the oval basin and faces the sun. I have spent many a summer day having a few cheeky ones chatting away whilst the sun goes into the bay. So if this isn't your bag - stay away (that way there is more room for the rest of us who do).

Of course I chose the veggie options which included Garlic Mushrooms, Mediterranean vegetables and feta in oil and a good stack of pitta. It was yummy, not exactly mind blowing but really tasty. What does make this place unique is the fantastic view over the bay, so essentially that's what your paying for with your £7 glass of champagne and limited tapas menu. It was worth a visit but it's not the kind of place I'd go regularly.

I highly recommend going for lunch, where there are appetizers under £3, wine and beer for £2 (one glass only), and many mains for £7.50-8.50. For vegetarians, vegan, and gluten free folks - they have a very extensive menu that is very clearly marked. ( I personally recommend the vegetarian enchilada.)

Not a bad place for a date at all! ~ Customer Service: The waitress who served us was excellent. Really friendly, prompt, and since it was Valentine's Day we even got served some complimentary wine for 2. The food came out in no time at all - can't fault that! Overall, absolutely no complaints about the service. Even though it was a really busy night, things still went smoothly. ~ Food: Delicious! We ordered: - 2 Taco Planks (£12 for 2): There was a variety of options you can choose for toppings on the grilled soft tortilla and we opted for the pork and the garlic chili prawns. I especially loved the prawn tacos! The lime aioli sauce they used was absolutely divine. The taco planks were also a lot larger than I thought they would be. Normally, restaurants served tacos in 3s but the taco planks were HUGE! I couldn't even count how many there were! - Sea Bass Achiote (£13.95) DELICIOUS! I absolutely loved this dish and would definitely be ordering it again next time I come back. The sea bass was perfectly cooked and the crab and prawns was perfect in the tomato sauce that was served with it. Normally, I don't order fish at restaurants because fish is really hard to get right and when it's cooked wrong, it's terrible! However, I can safely report that Las Iguanas KNOWS their way around fish. Incredible dish! --- I'm really pleased with my Valentine's Day meal. Going to a new place for a special occasion is always a risk, but we're really pleased with how this one went!
