I have been studying dance since I was 5 years old (thanks, mom!), so the first thing I did when I moved to Edmonton was find a dance studio. One of my girlfriends recommended Marr Mac. I love this studio's location: it is at the back of the building occupied by Movie Studio and is very discreet. The studio itself is in the basement and consists of several large dance rooms. There are hardwood floors and wall-to-wall mirrors in every room.I signed up for musical theater, hip-hop and jazz. Additionally, there are ballet and tap classes. What can I say about the intructors? These people bring out the best in their students and make everyone believe in themselves. They are quick to provide encouraging words and to commend, and they never reprimand or discourage. There were several older women in my hip-hop class who confessed that their feelings of inadequacy upon starting the class disappeared as the classes progressed, thanks to the instructor's professionalism and encouraging words. I didn't get a chance to experience it first hand but as far as I know, Marr Mac's students get to perform onstage at various venues and to take dance trips abroad. Our musical theater teacher mentioned that once we master our routine, we will get to perform onstage. I wish I stayed at Marr Mac long enough to see this happen. Unfortunate circumstances made me stop attending this wonderful studio. I am thinking about resuming the classes very shortly.

You can really see the instructors enjoy what they were doing. My little can be a bit shy and it was so cool to see her open up and start moving and grooving with the others. A big part of my rating is also based on how well the pivoted during the changes in protocols ect. We always felt well informed and were given tons of options. They do offer a ton of competitive and recreational dancing as well which we are excited to try in the fall, but I definitely can recommend the summer camps. So fun for the kids!

REVIEW UPDATE So we…read moreare now in our 2nd year at Dance Co. and could not be any happier! My daughter did 2 full year long classes last year, attended the summer camp including a pizza party and sleepover, and now both my daughter and son are enrolled again in year long classes. Our experiences at Dance Co have been phenomenal! The quality of instruction and teachers has been top notch, the facility is wonderful, and the staff always friendly and helpful. The only thing I didn't like so much last year was the end of year format for recital time ended up requiring that we purchase tickets to two separate show times and it's through ticket master so you end up paying surcharges on the tickets so they ended up being about $15 each which for a family with grandparents, siblings, and 2 shows to attend ends up being more than a $150. I'm not sure how they could rectify this other than maybe only selling tickets through them and then not having the ticket master surcharge which adds up being close to $40 when you are buying 8 tickets (4 tix for 2 show times). One thing Dance Co. does to help support families with multiple dancers or a dancer that takes a lot of classes, is you pay by the number of hours taught per week. So each subsequent class costs slightly less per hour than the previous class in any given year. And this is the case that swayed me into signing my 3 year old son up for preschool dance this year because his sister is already taking 2 full one hour weekly classes, so why not add on a half hour preschool class on the same night as his big sis? Dance Co. also has a little consignment section which is great for picking up a second hand pair of taps or ballet shoes for your chitlin. They also offer a preschool program that always fills up and looks just marvellous (as I peek through the window). I foresee a long relationship with Dance Co. Two thumbs WAY UP! Oh and don't forget to attend their summer customer appreciation day with a free BBQ, bouncy castle, face painting, trial classes, and draws!

Sugar Swing is as sweet as it gets. It is fun. It is groovy. It is a blast…read more When you do join Sugar Swing Dance classes, you're not just another student in a class. You become part of a non-judgemental community - an almost exclusive swing dancing community that welcomes you with such friendliness that almost feels like home. Now, that's excellent hospitality in the making. Instructors are super friendly and professional at what they do. They offer classes to complete beginners and no partner is necessary which is a mega bonus. I have personally been taking lessons since May 2017 and have met a lot of friendly peeps. If you are afraid that you may look like a complete fool, don't worry - everyone is there to have a good time learning and bettering their swing skills. No one's got time to analyse how bad you're doing because we have all been there. Instructors are always ready to give you a tip or two which almost immediately makes one look like a pro at swing dancing. Apart from the classes they offer, they have social nights which are held on Fridays and Saturdays. These nights are open to everyone even if you have never swing danced before. They do beginners' lessons on social nights like these at 8PM followed by the official social dancing at 9PM. Again, you don't need a partner even for events like these. Just bring yourself and a big smile to the dance floor! Discounted rates are made available for both students and members of the Sugar Swing Dance Club. Another mega bonus!!! :D WIN!

I was lucky that one of the Sugar Swing dancers (I think his name was Reed) offered to partner with me and a lot of fun ensued! They had 5 members at our event and they all brought their own personality and spunk to their performances. They were definitely the perfect pairing to our Prohibition themed party and really brought the life to the party! It was a real treat, both to watch and join in on the fun! J'Adore Dance and Wellness is the home of Salsa Babies!…read more I heard about Salsa Babies when my daughter was but a wee lassie so I registered for a session. Hot tamales Batman - so much fun! The long and the short of it is a salsa/latin dance class for moms in which your baby is snuggled to you in their baby carrier. Yuppers, your baby is your dance partner! Usually classes are once a week for 10 weeks and each class is about 1 hours. It's a great way to help you lose your baby weight, make mommy friends, socialize your child and have a great time. The classes are a bit pricey, about $125. I believe you can claim this as a child fitness credit - added incentive. J'Adore Dance and Wellness also has a number of toddler and preschool dance classes and programs that help your child develop movement skills and a love for dance. I know we'll be going to more!

If I could post a quarter of a star I would, but that's not an option. I don't usually post reviews…read morebut needed to from what I experienced. My daughter attended J'adore for 4 years. It was good the first year, with competent teachers who actually taught dance, corrected poor technique and gave feedback on semiannual reviews. However every year after that the studio would shift focus and redesign their curriculum, create new class levels. It was frustrating and confusing. In order to get my daughter noticed-the staff have specified favorites and ignore most of their dancers who actually support their entire business-and moved to the next level, which she needed, she was required to attend a specified number of summer class to "qualify". She qualified and was moved up a level, but the teachers still had to dumb down the dancing to the lowest level of dancer on the class instead of teaching and improving everyone. Last year she was approached by a teacher during class and told they wanted her in their company. I was taken aback that the teacher would approach the student first and not the parents. I actually cried in the car on the way home because I knew she wanted to attend but we couldn't afford it. The program is ridiculously expensive because I had asked about it the year before. After back and forth with the studio, a deal was worked out to allow my daughter to participate in the company with a scholarship provided by the school which I greatly appreciated and my daughter was thrilled. The company program is intense and even still at the company level the teachers only give solos and special parts to a handful of their favorite dancers and dumbed down dances to the lowest level. Unfortunately, our family had to move in December for a job opportunity ( we knew for 3 months we were going to move but waited until absolutely necessary) and I was afraid to tell the studio my daughter was moving because I knew they would treat her differently and ignore her. Which is exactly what happened, they took her out of dances, made her stand to the side in classes, and ignored her completely when we had our house under contract and I had to tell we were moving. On top of that, I immediately received a new invoice with additional charges for the classes she had attended so far, which removed the scholarship almost entirely. I argued and showed proof of their shady and unethical billing practices, but was repeatedly sent bills and as another parent wrote earlier, threatened with collections. The teachers yell and scream at the girls making them feel stupid and incompetent. And what's worse is the the "pay to play/dance" mentality. In order to have a "special" part in their Nutcracker performances, you audition and then have to pay and extra fee to participate. The quality of their performances at first was good, with their shows performed at real theaters, but this last Klara performance was at a crappy high school auditorium and the tickets were ridiculously overpriced. Originally my daughter was supposed to be in 4 numbers, but they decided to give the teachers-who are also part of their new dance company attached to the school which is a place for the older girls who used to attend J'adore can't get a real professional dancing job to teach and still dance- special parts in the performances instead of showcasing the students. I was so frustrated that the teachers had run good staff off (Ms. Alyssa and Mr. Ryan) and stretched themselves too thin choreographing for their favorite students that decided to scrap the student numbers and give solos to the teachers. I don't want to pay money to see a terrible performance of the Waltz of the Flowers not on pointe except for the teacher on pointe and has turned in feet and sloppy technique which she's teaching to others. I am glad we have moved because my daughter is getting REAL high quality dance instruction at more than half the price.
