Been here for a birthday brunch before and it was great. Today I ordered a Mother's Day package for one. It was plentiful and everything was delicious. All the items were packaged well. The service was super slow, and our food came out cold.  From where I was sitting, I could see that the food sat on the counter for approximately 15 to 20 minutes.  The server even came by, looked at the food, and then walked away.... By the time we got the food, it was cold. read more

I used to like this place. Until the St. Patrick's Day Farm Dinner -- part of my main meal was the hard, white stump of cabbage, instead of their advertised "crispy cabbage", which was served properly to my husband sitting right next to me. We had also just raved about the sweet potato dish. But upon serving our meal course, instead of the advertised carrots, we received another potato, and then I had the stump on my plate. Can't imagine someone in the kitchen sitting there thinking that was okay to serve, unless this person purposely put it there. This same person also plated a nice piece of corned beef on my husband's plate, while I had a small, fatty piece. Will NEVER go there again. Also should mention, I put a post on FB about the stump, and now Celestial has blocked me!! Guess they can't take criticism. read more

3 strikes you're out. Had eaten here twice before. I spaced out my visits because I always found the food a little lackluster. But the owner was so nice and presentation of food was unique enough to keep me trying. So I did. Until my last recent visit. The "hostess" had a puss on her face from the second our party entered. We even tried to joke with her to lighten the mood. No such luck. This is a miserable person and an unfortunate choice to greet customers. We had a reservation and the restaurant was very far from busy. Yet she kept us waiting in the doorway for over 20 minutes for no apparent reason. When we were finally seated we passed through a sea of dirty tables and found our table to have dirty glasses. Which the same sour person took 20 more minutes to fill with water. Which she also poured messily missing glasses and onto the table. Nonetheless we tried to make pleasantries with her as we really wanted to enjoy our evening. She then abandoned us for almost another 30 minutes. Never introduced herself. Nothing. We asked someone if they could send her over. This clearly upset her and she actually accused us of being aggressive- because we asked for drinks. Amazing. She was so absolutely absurd that we decided to just leave. She told us she couldn't care less if we left. We went down the street to Back 40 and had an amazing experience with amazing staff. We laughed all night and happily spent lots of our hard earned cash. And, as usual tipped quite generously. We also made sure to tell everyone about our experience. On a last note, Miss congeniality also made a point of telling us when we asked to speak to the owner that she didn't care because she was related to her. I wonder how happy that owner, who we remember fondly, is that this relative is literally taking money out of her pocket. This is a small town. Word travels fast. Be careful Celestial. Too much good competition to treat your customers like this. Shame. read more

Went here on Friday, Jan 19, 2024. First, with all the fantastic restaurants in Rhode Island, THIS ONE IS WORTH SKIPPING! We had a 7:15, and half the restaurant was empty with dirty tables all around. There were four of us, and we asked for a booth, and we were told all the booths were full and weren't. When we finally got seated almost 20 minutes later, we sat there waiting until nearly 8 o'clock for one of the most unfriendly, unprofessional servers to walk over and take our drink order. We stayed another 20 minutes and just decided to leave. When we got up, this waitress, who should never be in the service business; started over to our table with our drinks, 45 minutes after entering the place. When we tried to explain why we were leaving, she said, well, do what you want and walked away with the wasted drinks in hand. What a horrible experience, and as a local, I will never return or recommend this place again. To top it off, when asked to speak to the owner-manager, I was told she wasn't there. The horrible waitress informed me that she was the niece or somehow related to the owner in a very nasty and sarcastic tone. With all of the good restaurants closing in Rhode Island with excellent service, this one is one I won't miss. LOST A CUSTOMER FOR LIFE, so as your waitress so confidently suggested, "do what you want." I will, and I will let everyone know that going to Celestial Cafe is not worth it. read more

The eggplant towers dish is always my go-to here. They put value on locally sourced products which they label on their menu. They also make one of the BEST cosmopolitan cocktails around! Prices can be a bit high but for the quality of the dishes it's worth it. read more

First time with a friend who recommended it. The menu was so interesting, in a good way. It was complex and everything looked so good. Not many "common" dishes. A lot of super fresh, local ingredients. There was such a variety of types of dishes, made choosing so difficult. I ended up going with the SPICY CHICKEN & PORK BELLY RAMEN- Pulled Cedar Valley chicken, crispy Pat's Pastured pork bellly, RI Mushroom Co. mix, purple cabbage, SK Farm Market carrots, peapods, farm co-op greens, tamari, boiled egg, ginger, chili pepper and Laurel Hill microgreens in our house made chicken broth. My friend ordered the ribs which were her second time in a row ordering. My ramen was way above my expectations of ramen. The perfectly cooked chicken and pork were amazing. The broth was flavorful and the noodles were perfectly el dente. The chef came around to the tables and greeted everyone. I will definitely be returning. Bravo chef! read more

This was our first time dining out since March! We were completely impressed by celestial. They were following safety protocols, all tables were spaced for distancing. The food was AMAZING! We had the pulled pork nachos for a starter. Delish! So unique and so much flavor. hubby had the filet- which I snuck a taste of- so good! Cooked to perfection. I had the Chicken eclipse...when I tell you I have had dreams of this amazing dish ever since- I am not lying! So so good. The service was excellent. Why in a RI restaurant would a chef put fish and chips on a daily menu and use frozen fish with tank armor batter? Awful. Just use fresh fish and a fish-chic batter, then add your seasoning flair. No one wants to chew their f&c until their jaws hurt. Cole slaw was not good, couldn't eat more than one bite. The Vietnamese noodles were described much better than they were delivered. The menu writer here is more skilled than the kitchen staff. I will compliment the soup of the day - a corn chowder. Tasty. This place has slipped. I get the supply chain\covid\Biden inflation\can't get help issues. When you charge $9.50 for a draft, seems like there is cover to keep quality up to par. Not returning. read more

Celestial Cafe is a hidden gem I absolutely love this place. I found it by accident 4yrs ago on my way to Newport Rhode Island. I was lost, cold & hungry. From the outside looking in I assumed it was a bar with basic bar food boy was I wrong. As the saying goes "Don't judge a book by its cover". This was our second visit to this restaurant and each time I left disappointed. Tonight I ordered the strawberry roasted pear salad with chicken. It had 1 strawberry and 3 thin slices of pear. I had to search for the blue cheese crumbles - I think I found 4. The chicken was tasteless, over cooked and dry. All this for $27. lots of spinach. Very little dressing. I did not ask for more dressing because on a previous visit I had the peachy chicken and it came with very little "peach sauce". When I asked for a bit more, I was told sauces were made to order and I'd have to wait. I agreed & twenty minutes I got the sauce - burnt and not at all peachy. and we were charged $3 extra! My dinner mate tonight had the Vietnamese noodles and it was so spicy he could not finish the dish..... no flavor just heat. I am not keen to go back. The ribs were very good. Solid 4!! Probably even over 4 but not quite. We tried farmer's dinner menu and regular. Food is great. Salads from the menu were delish! Great dressings and fresh. Entrees also great ( chicken parm & Thai cod with risotto ). The watermelon/feta/mint salad could've been great but ingredients by themselves were not top notch, watermelon wasn't really sweet and crunchy and feta was ok so it took away from the dish. My peach mojito drink from farmers dinner menu was so so. Scallops with peach salsa & rice from farmers dinner menu were cooked perfect but salsa itself had no flavor, again due to peach being hard and not flavorful, rice was lukewarm and very plain tasting. Ambience is casual, a bit dark. Service was friendly and caring. To summarize the food from their standard menu was 5/5. Farmers dinner menu was uneven and more so due to ingredient itself in my opinion. We liked that the chef walked in and talked to the regulars. Would recommend without reservations but not quite 5 on this visit! read more

This was place outstanding. It's clearly a favorite with the locals and a well hidden gem! The farm to table concept is done perfectly. And the portion sizes where quiet large so bring an appetite! My husband came for my birthday and we shared everything, including the house salad. And I brought home left overs. We started with a house salad, floretine pizza (amazingly done, thin and just right), chicken parmesan and ended with a homemade apple pocket with homemade Carmel ice cream. If you live in RI or visiting or near URI you should come! I'd think about reservation if you are more than 2. Oh I almost forget. An outstanding craft ber, craft cocktails and extensive wine list. We have eaten here twice since my initial visit, once on a Wednesday night and once on a Friday.The menu and food are still excellent. However the service stinks. It took almost an hour to get our appetizers and another hour for our main course. Our waiter disappeared after taking our orders and I had to stop another server and order drinks. I spoke to the owner while we were leaving and he said he is having trouble hiring. Well URI is only 10 miles away and they have 1000's of people looking for part time work. read more

A death in the family brought me back home and I was in charge of booking the brunch after the funeral at the Veterans Memorial Cemetary. The Cafe is located just south, a stone's throw away from the cemetery which automatically makes them a logical candidate. Close proximity wasn't needed. My career was in the wholesale bakery field and I've walked through the back door of a thousand restaurants like this to interact with managers. As soon as Chris started showing me the brunch options I could tell this kid had his act together. He was also in charge of serving us and the service was impeccable. It was a nice touch when the women at our table received their drinks and plates ahead of the men. It's old-fashioned for sure, but a nice and classy gesture nonetheless. There's nothing wrong with old-fashioned class. It was noticed and appreciated. Our brunch consisted of a fruit cup with cantaloupe and berries, blueberry pancakes, home fries with both white and sweet potatoes (a table favorite), a frittata, and a chicken marsala dish. Everyone at the table gave it a thumbs up. I was most surprised by the pancakes. They were so soft and fluffy and the blueberries with syrup just melted into one awesome flavor. I had to nitpick, the frittata could have used a little more kick to it. But I'm a spice/hot sauce/red pepper freak so take that with a grain of salt. No pun intended. My wife rolled her eyes when I mentioned it. :). The Celestial Cafe is a first class operation all the way. We'll be back in RI at the end of August and my daughter wants to take us to a craft brewery just up the street. We'll be sure to stop in to say hi to Chris and to enjoy another meal at their fine establishment. read more

If I could give this place negative stars, I would. A reservation was made in advance as family was coming into town. When we arrived, they sat us in the bar with a table that was completely wobbly. Requested a table in the dining area (where tables were available and we were willing to wait for one) two times. After an unfriendly manager came over to talk to us, who was clearly not concerned with customer service, we ended up leaving. Seriously some of the rudest staff I have ever encountered. I know the chef here would be seriously disappointed as he is always friendly and makes a point to speak with patrons. After 10 years of continued patronage, we will not be returning. read more

Me and my boyfriend had been coming to this place since 2018 but had stopped for a little over 2 years since the pandemic happened. With our recent visit to celebrate my boyfriend's birthday, (it was a Saturday, Feb 11 around 4pm) we were sat at the high table by the bar with bartenders serving us. These servers were nice and friendly except for the receptionist who asked us if we're dining in and my boyfriend answered "yes, can we get a table? She answered with an unfriendly tone "well we're fully booked tonight that's what I'm trying to say!" When she should've mentioned it beforehand! Now for the food part, overall we would say they were all on the SWEET side. We had Eastern Calamari for appetizer (kinda sweet but it's wicked good) Scallop & Shrimp Piccata risotto, Spicy chicken & Pork belly Ramen. These 2 entrees' sweetness really threw us off. My boyfriend had to put a good amount of salt into his risotto to at least get rid of the sweetness. After eating our dessert we were given our bill. Boyfriend signed it and tipped and everything. Server came back and told us she gave us the wrong bill by accident which really turned my boyfriend off not because we don't want to pay extra $9 but that shouldn't happen in the first place. Overall, that recent experience made us rate this restaurant from consistently 9, down to 6 out of 10 being the highest. We've been to all the restaurants in RI and we always have high regards for this restaurant but maybe they have changed chefs? The receptionist definitely needs to improve her interpersonal skills. read more

A hidden gem! Don't let the exterior deceive you, this restaurant is excellent! We came for a late lunch. I ordered the New Orleans Stacked Burger (pictured) and my wife got a Chicken Parmesan sandwich. I was very impressed with my burger, and while I initially thought the $14 price seemed a little steep in relation to other items on the menu, it was delicious and I would order it again without hesitation. Most of the sandwiches were priced between $9-$10. $14 was standard for their two specialty burgers. Craft beers on draft were $6.25. Considering its in Exeter, it's likely a little out of your way, but it's worth the trip! I am eager to return to check out their dinner menu as well as their "farm dinner." read more
