The Albert G. Horton Memorial Cemetery is a State Veterans Cemetery on Milners Road in a rural area…read moreof Suffolk. Its 2004 opening provided a military cemetery for the huge military community that chose to retire in Coastal Virginia. The cemetery is one of a number of regional cemeteries run by the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, Eligible Veterans receive one free burial site & USDVA provided outer burial receptions/crypts & headstones. Should a veterans's wife predecease him, the headstone is inscribed with her information facing forward. When the veteran dies his information is inserted on the opposite side and the headstone rotated so his information faces the front, My Uncle had originally planned to be buried at Arlington. After his wife died, the funeral director mentioned Albert Horton. When we left my Uncle asked what I thought. We both had individually felt that it would be a place where we could more easily visit her. We toured the next day. Even the drive down Milners Road is picturesque. The cemetery itself was clean, new and beautifully laid out. The staff was friendly. The decision was made. At that time word of the beautiful Veterans Cemetery had not yet widely spread. She received a convenient plot near the drive through and near a bench. There appeared to be space for burials for many years. That hasn't been the case. The Cemetery filled over the years and has been expanded. When my Uncle died I had my first experience with the Pavilion, which is used to provide a military graveyard service with Honor Guard. It was a moving experience for the man I considered my second father. The Honor Guard was a special final recognition for the retired Naval Commander, buried in his uniform, who had served in WWII, Korean & Vietnam. Albert Horton Veterans Cemetery continues to serve as a valued source for a final resting place for those who have served our country. Wreaths across America places gorgeous holiday wreaths on each grave. The Horton Wreath Society places wreaths on military holidays. Contributions can be made and are encouraged. Whether the burial be a traditional plot with stone, a columbarium or in ground urn, there is no cost for those Veterans who qualify. Thank you to the Virginia Department of Veterans Services. I am eternally grateful for the diligence, respect, and kindness shown to my family while my mother was in their care. Their team meticulously prepared my mother and presented her more beautifully than I could've imagined. I remember feeling much anxiety about a viewing - as anyone would - but experiencing an indescribable feeling when I did it; my mother was gorgeous. I cannot forget the warmth I felt while carrying out the difficult task of coordinating my mother's remains at every stage. I was shown patience, empathy, and respect. My mother's funeral was held in New York, but her first stop was with E. Vaughn Wray, and they took expert care of her. They even continued to reach out to my family as we traveled behind my mother from Virginia to New York for her services. They reached out during the process to ensure that her interstate transition went as smoothly as possible. They even offered their support after her services had concluded. On 2/4/2022, I signed a contract with E. Vaughn Wray Funeral Establishment to embalm my mother's…read morebody and send her by plane to NY. The contract also involved the purchase of 6 certified death certificates. The total bill was $2114.00. ($542 for air transport by American Airlines and $1572 for the embalming, death certificates and tax). My mother's body was sent to another funeral home in Queens, N.Y. On 2/9, the embalmer at the other funeral home called me with the following disturbing information. 1. My mother's body was not embalmed properly. 2. She was sent in a container that was neither new nor approved for remains. He said the E. Vaughn Wray funeral home simply took an old container, flipped it inside out and placed my mother's body inside of it. He said she was not strapped in properly as well. He said it was the most disrespectful thing he had ever seen, in addition to other disturbing observations. Immediately after I spoke with this person, I called EVR funeral home to inform him of what I was told. I asked him for a refund. He refused. On 2/22, I called him to ask about the certified death certificates and why I had not received them. He said "this is a service that my company provides and we won't be providing this service". I am currently seeking legal advice on this matter. I had a gut feeling that I should not use this company when he asked me on the phone, even before I met him at the establishment, if I was bringing check or credit card. He also (multiple times) insensitively referred to transport of my mother's body as "shipping", as if I was purchasing an item on Amazon. The process of burying your mother is tough enough. Companies like this make it even more unbearable.
