The professors are really good and helpful. I choose Greystone to study because I read a lot of good reviews in my hometown. I hope you enjoy to study here too and have a good experience as I had :)

This is a review for the Japanese General Level 1 language course…read more Currently halfway through the course (week 4) but so far, the course has been amazing! Class size maxes out at 10 people so classes are intimate and you get to know your fellow classmates. Apparently the course still runs if minimum 2 people are registered in the course! Price remains the same but it's considered semi-private lessons and are 1.5 hours long. If 3 or more people register, it goes back to being 2 hours long. Yoshiko, our instructor, is fabulous, always making sure we understand before moving on to the next part of the lesson. Classes are a blend of conversational and writing, 60/40 mix. For the Japanese General courses, they cover two chapters of GENKI I textbook (textbook has 12 chapters, good for the first 6 levels of Japanese at IH!). By the end of level 1, we are suppose to know hiragana, katakana and also be introduced to kanji! It's no cakewalk, do expect to put in some effort but it's totally worth it! I've taken many language courses in high school, undergrad and continuing ed (e.g. french, mandarin, latin) but this course is my favorite hands down! Because the course is during November/December session, it is only 7 weeks long instead of the regular 8 weeks (due to Christmas break). Regardless, 2 chapters are still going to be covered! Price is reasonable, $195+tax and textbook if you don't have your own copy (+ $75). In regards to the admin staff, I have had no problems with them. Course registration was painless, and they were able to provide me with an official invoice/receipt for work purposes. Overall I am extremely happy with the quality of language instruction and small intimate class sizes. It's also located at a convenient location downtown, close to Stadium-Chinatown skytrain station. That being said, I'm definitely continuing on to Level 2 in the new year =D

Took an intro Mandarin course thinking it'd be an easier transition coming from a Cantonese…read morebackground. The entire operation was pretty smooth from registration through to the end of the course. Registration online is easy. However, I would recommend that they differentiate International House Vancouver (ihvancouver.com) offering more than just language training -- homestays, volunteering, work experience, etc. from the modern languages area (languages-vancouver.com). Both are based out of the same office, but becomes confusing for those looking for just one or the other. A quick assessment test over the phone pretty much determines which level you would be appropriate for. The curricula are set up so that you can progress at your own pace since it is a rolling schedule. The classes themselves are small with (based on my observation) student-teacher ratios no more than 15:1. This is essential to getting enough attention from the teacher especially in the critical level 1 classes where you're learning the foundations of a language. Classes can be as small as 3 but I've never seen classes larger than 15. The instructors (which really make up the majority of your experience with the school) are great. I've only ever had one but the quality of instruction is on par with what you'd experience at a continuing ed course at a local college or university. The program also offers instructor feedback which indicates they take their quality of instruction seriously. I'm already signed up for level 2 but I encourage anyone looking to learn or improve their language skills to give IH a good hard look. They provide solid teaching & structured learning for good value vs. other institutions in the city.

I volunteered at eye level for several months and it was as it awesome as it gets! I was…read moreimmediately surprised by how the instructors really cared for the students and made an effort to know them on a personal level. Solid one-on-one instruction as well as dedicated volunteers make Eye Level a fun and inviting learning environment. If you're looking for a place with great role models and exciting ways to discover math/english, I would definitely recommend Eye Level Learning Center.

I've been practicing book keeping for about 7 years now in Quickbooks, however, this course made me…read morequickly realize that all I was doing was data entry for the accounting without the understanding about the logic behind my entries. Quickbooks can spoil someone that way. This class actually forces you to think by doing everything manually. It's good to finally get the logic and the reasoning behind certain entries, especially debits and credits. The notes are provided for you, easy to follow. The class themselves sometimes goes a little too fast, however, you can follow the slideshow on the Langara website (log in and password is provided when you pay and register). It helps after the class the following day to do the whole tutorial on your own before doing the homework. The text book is easy to follow since they have a lot of diagrams. In conjunction with Jennifer's class notes at the beginning of each close reviewing the following day is easy. The instructor Jennifer was very patient with me in answering all my questions. It helps to come in early if there are common things that you do not understand just so that you're not holding the class back. My employer at the time allowed me an extra 30 minutes to go early so that I could ask these questions (He did pay for me to take the course). I've had to e-mail Jennifer a few questions while I was at work in relation to homework and some of the transactions I was assigned to do. I felt more comfortable asking her in a non judgemental but informative way. She gets back to you right away within a day. There are class assignments to be handed in on class 2 and the other on Class 5. Be careful 'cause even though my mathematics and logic was correct, I lost marks on the formatting which can be easily missed if you're using excel. Class 5 was the hardest which was closing the year end balances to 0. I found this class specifically difficult. I have the advantage of having no children and or marriage, therefore, it was very easy for me to do the recommended 6 - 9 hours of homework per week. I had the advantage of doing a lot of my homework during my lunch period and the rest at coffee shops. There is recommended homework that is not to be handed in. I highly suggest investing the time to actually get this done. The more you practice the more it actually comes together full circle. A lot of people on the first day brought lap tops and notebooks, however, you will not need this. All you need is a good book 8 by 11" with lines. I just bought the regular college accounting textbook which is good for both level 1 and 2. There is suggested supplementary books, however, those are just a waste of money. They have a study tool workbook that may be helpful. I do find that most templates you can either Google them or make your own in excel. You do need an old school regular non scientific calculator. Don't buy it from the book store as it is highway robbery. I bought mine from the dollar store. The classes themselves are 3 hours each in the evenings. They do go by fast. If you work a regular 9 - 5 you have to keep yourself in check that you're not burnt out mentally by the 8:30 mark. The course is 6 consecutive weeks. I recommend not skipping any 'cause it all ties in together in the end, the process, the understanding and the logic. There was one guy who came in who missed the first 2 classes. Those classes were easy, however, they were extremely important to the full cycle logic of things. Everyone has their excuses but I suggest putting stuff on hold like parties and other events on Thursday if you don't have the lifestyle freedom as I do. Each course is $255 for level one and $255 for level two. After level two the courses do get higher in cost to $405.
