I'm still not a fan of Langara, mostly because they are so stubborn and will not have earlier continuing evening classes or more classes offered on the weekend, making it extremely stressful and difficult for me to commute home. Also, the experience with the instructor in the first class, who didn't show up for the final exam, made the class an absolute nightmare (although Langara did right by taking our complaints seriously and giving everyone a very generous credit). And the Starbucks on campus is run by fucking morons. However, I am giving them back a star, because I was impressed with how they handled the recent school closure. On Monday April 1st, a disgruntled student* set off some incendiary devices in the school, causing the evacuation and closure of the school for two days (luckily it reopened on Wednesday April 3rd, the day I had class). It was big news, and Langara was really good with sending everyone informative emails about the incident. They updated everyone in a timely manner about the school closure and what was going on (Translink could learn from them), and even after the school was reopened, they kept everyone informed about the progress of the case, and offered students support services if needed. The emails were well written, informative, and interesting. There were quite a few emails, but it didn't feel like spam. So good job, Langara, at keeping people informed. *One of my classmates said that she had found out that the student who set off the devices had failed his chemistry class. I guess good thing he failed, otherwise the damage might have been worse. read more

School has set times for registration for classes, apparently its randomized but if you get anything that's not the first day good luck. Courses fill up with the insane amount of international students Langara hosts and you'll be lucky to have a spot in the 20's in the waitlist. Not even the worst part. Before you can actually see the course outline or how the course is etc, Langara has their 100% refund date set to just the day before all that info goes live. If on the day all the info goes live and you see that you don't like the course itself, too bad you just lost money and are now only eligible for a 70% refund. This school is the gross reality of what post secondary has become, a product only for those who can afford it and past that, only for those with the incomprehensible patience for it. read more

Hmmm so where do I begin here. I decided to give out langara a try since I've been at Douglas college for quite some time. I've been here for two days now and I am beginning not to like it here. Too many international students and I feel very left out and awkward here. The admissions is the worst, they give you mixed up messages telling you to call a number when that number tells you to call someone else. I don't know who to reach in this stupid college and it's getting very annoying. I also go sick with Covid there drop classes rules are very selfish and disgusting they said that you must not drop a class if you owe them Money and even if you drop you still own them. I fell behind so how can I complete a course when it's 3 weeks into the semester? You can't charge someone money when someone has been sick for more than 1 week with the virus. Never heard anything so stupid in my entire life! I regret changing colleges I was better off at new west Douglas since it's closer to where I live. The commute to langara is insane the 49 is the worst bus in all of Vancouver. I also can't seem to navigate the college that well since it's divided into too many parts and I can't tell them apart it's very easy to get lost there. Won't come back in fall it's not worth it don't waste you time and money. It's cheaper but it sucks. read more

I always found this place a depressing hell hole of a transitional school. Where many students come to bump up their grades or wait out waiting periods at other schools. The teaching staff and administration certainly don't do anything to really make it feel enjoyable and they themselves seem to exude this air about them that suggests there are better places to be. Literally the most depressing place I've ever attended for school. It's good for transferring towards another institution, the profs are generally hit or miss. Do your research on who to take before you enroll into classes. Other wise, most students can't seem to respect other people or the amenities provided. Consistently gross throughout the school in terms of cleanliness. Librarians are really rude as well. read more

I've been going to Langara for the past 4 years, attending the evening photography program. This program is top-notch, it gets 6/5 stars. You won't find a better value, well taught program anywhere in city and maybe the country? But the college, le sigh.. I guess it's run well enough, but there are so many areas that could be improved. For example, cleanliness! The cleaning is very inconsistent. Some spots are ok, but then you go into the computer labs, and there is all manner of gunk in there. Like random hairs on the mice and keyboards?? (And every week too!) We would start bringing sanitary napkins to clean the equipment ourselves. Don't get me started with the cafeteria which seems to have 90% filthy tables and 10% passable ones... The food options are limited.. if you have a couple night classes, eating dinner there a couple nights a week doesn't make you feel the best. They tried opening a sandwich bar instead of having a quizno's but it comes across as a dingy stall, I'm not sure how they are making money there, I literally see no-one ever there... To be honest, a lot of the students don't seem to treat the facilities very well either, I'm not sure how come. But anyways, the photography program makes it well worth the visit despite these things! read more

Current student here but thankfully transferring next fall, and would 10/10 not recommend this school, especially if you are paying out of your own pocket to get an education. I have had shitty school experiences in the past with unstable course schedules and horrible profs, but never in my post secondary career, have I felt so defeated. Not only are the professors extremely unprofessional, there is no way for a FIRST YEAR STUDENT to successfully continue on with their career. 40% deducted from a final mark on a paper for a few MINOR MISTAKES on a refrence sheet, 50% taken off of paper OUTLINE due to the profs mistakes, emails that have gotten no response, emails with RUDE responses, profs who bitch about working there and profs who make condescending remarks. My GPA has done a 360 and I put all my time and effort into studying, looking info up on youtube, having a family member/uni friends peer review my papers and give pointers, etc. I go the whole 9 yards. If you are a first year student looking for somewhere cheap to attend, I would save yourself the time and money and go elsewhere. read more

I had a completely different experience than those below. For me, Langara was a great way to do 2 years of uni transfer to UBC at great prices and small classes. The professors are mostly great despite several of them madly recruiting their personal ideology (Poli Sci - to be expected). I continue to be in contact with several of my teachers. I've also attended UBC and U of Ottawa and some of my favourite educational memories remain with Langara. Now for the critique: the SUB tries so hard to be politically correct that it borderline discriminates. Its members were such small-minded Langara 'lifers', more interested in stirring up conflict than resolving conflict in their small fishbowl existence. That said, I would encourage anybody to attend Langara - it's a quality educational institution. read more

Ah Langara... I spent a few years in these halls. It's not state-of-the-art, prestigious or unique in any way. It is however, a very affordable way to earn first and second year University credits. If you're going to spin your wheels why not do it somewhere where the classes are cheap and the class sizes are small enough that you can actually talk to a teacher who might give you some good advice. Let me tell you a little bit about transfer credits. To transfer to UBC you need to take classes at Langara that are in the University Transfer program. You also need to take both terms of a class within a certain year, like both English 101 and 102 in order for it to transfer. I was warned long before I took an arts program that none of my credits would transfer anywhere. I watched students try to transfer to Emily Carr and sure enough, no transfer. When I went to University in the states I sent down my Langara transcript and low behold they took 36 credits that they had told me "weren't transfer credits." To Langara's credit, thanks for sending a nice clear transcript which saved me $24,000.00 in tuition down here. read more

In the nice part of Vancouver's westside, central location, very safe. It's gone thru some renovations. Been here to use the washrooms before when I was in a jam, nice and clean, at the main entrance off the main road, where you can get limited free parking. It's got a decent-sized food court with a Timmy's but not a full-fledged one. Best part is the lounge seating area, quite large and cozy enough to take a power nap. In the back parking lot, they have these cute 'gazebo' for a smoke break lol. It's a smaller college that's been here just since 1994. read more

I went to Langara College with the intention to transfer to 2nd year at UBC. I got in, but many of my classmates didn't and had to waste one more year, losing precious time and money redoing courses. I transferred to UBC but at the cost of my personal life and health. Compared to Langara, UBC was a walk in the park. -You are at a MAJOR disadvantage competing for your desired Institution, Faculty, and Department. Your class percentage grade is converted into GPA on the transcript, which gets converted back to a percentage by the evaluating institution as a percentage value. 94% in a course is 4 on the transcript, which the receiving school sees as 90%. 49% in a course is 0 on the transcript, which the receiving school sees as 0%. You get the problem. You are then compared against other students, and the rounding above just might cost you an offer to a Department that you really want. -To add insult to the injury, instructors have too much freedom on how they teach and how they evaluate their students. They do not have departmental standards, which means you'll find that they are too tough on their students and fail you arbitrary If you are a prospective student considering Langara College to transfer to another school, I would advise you to look elsewhere. They do not want you to transfer out at year 1. It is a school where the game is stacked against you. Any misstep will cause major damage to your transcript which means extra time and retaking courses to get into that Department that you really want. read more

Graduated from their Data Processing program1970's. After that, I returned and took courses there but also at BCIT, UBC and City University. I must say that Langara has always been my favourite and mostly because of the teachers I have had there. I've found the continuing education instructors to be excellent. However Langara really needs to improve its website and the technology system it uses for students to enrol, etc. Very convoluted system requiring multiple IDs and passwords, often doesn't work and will jam up even in class. The IT help department is very inadequately staffed; it can take days to get an answer by that time your course has started, and if you're a continuing ed student you're almost out of luck being able to go in and see a live person. You'll end up in endless loops on their website trying to find the information you need ie how to buy a book from the bookstore, updated hours information, etc. These areas need a lot of attention as I'm sure they lose a lot of potential students who get frustrated and move on to another school. I'm already enrolled in a continuing ed program so will finish it but would choose another school otherwise. read more

Graduated from the BBA program in 2012 and would highly recommend this college to friends and family. The campus is nice enough but it is the quality of the instructors that really makes Langara an amazing place to learn. The years I spent at Langara were some of the best years of my life. Fantastic school! The BBA program is great here. The teachers are industry professionals who have years of experience in their fields. The classes are very hands on and they focus on application of knowledge rather than just lectures. Langara is ok if you want to transfer, provided that you actually get into the classes you need. The registration system is an absolute nightmare, having caused myself and most other students I know plenty of frustration. For instance, I had to wait for 3 full semesters in order get a seat in general chemistry I (first semester college chemistry), which is about as nonsensical as you can get if your intention as a student is to accomplish a reasonable amount of transferable academic work before you get to university. Furthermore, the wait lists here are often multiple times larger than the sizes of the classes themselves, even for core classes such as General Bio, Chem, Physics and calculus, all of which should be completed early on in order to proceed to higher level courses. For example, it it not uncommon for say, a biology class with 35 seats to have a wait list of 75+ students.It sure diddnt take long for me to realize that this type of thing is very common at Langara (certainly in the sciences), and very frustrating because instead of educating students, they are essentially preventing them from taking the classes they need (and could be taking elsewhere) in order to progress which is not only unacceptable but also very counter productive. read more

The IT department is absolutely shit. Do not go to this school if you want your wifi on campus to work and if you want to log in to a computer on campus. They took my name out of the system for no reason, and I couldn't log into anything or use the wifi. Absolute nightmare off an experience. This is my second year here at Langara and hopefully my last. I've had couple great profs that have genuinely inspired me but overall this place is an absolute nightmare. The registration process is especially nightmarish. In the past few years the move towards university equivilant courses and credit, as well as actual associate degree and degree programs offer more options than ever for advancing learning. I really enjoy this college and am eternally grateful that is my local school, however, I'm sure I'd still feel this way about it if I had to travel. read more

One of the least well organized institutions I've attended in my academic career. There's never anyone available to service your questions over the phone in peak hours and when they do the attendants are rude and terse - even if you yourself are using an overly friendly and respectful tone, you'll be met back with cold indifference at best and passive aggressiveness at worst. The campus is dreary and ugly, the student body is barely fluent in English and a walk through the hall is more like walking through an airport than anything. You just get this general atmosphere that no one wants to be there, staff included - unless it's on an event day, which they do schedule quite frequently so that's a positive. The website is horribly outfitted and a labyrinth of pointless links that often lead to a dead end. Overall I regret wasting time at this institution, I was just convinced that it was the best low cost college around but after having been to a couple others in the vicinity I realise my folly. 3/10 would not recommend. My biggest problem is the Staff - would it kill you to fucking smile? read more

From the education aspect I had great small classes and prof's. You can always find assignment help from somewhere ( prof's, student tutor or library ) . But the most needed help academic advising / counseling is horrible. Walk in's are always booked up which makes no sense. New Asian lady receptionist dose not offer any help when trying to provide service with a heavy accent. In person or on the phone she is very eager to tell you to go away or to hang up the phone without answering questions or directing you to the right place for your needs. Previous receptionist was way more helpful, understanding and not rude. Counseling appointments can be booked for weeks before you get to talk to anyone. I had to Call SFU and UBC to get help planning for my BA. Near the end of my 2 years at Langara I was happy to be leaving for the sake of getting more help when trying to plan my future. read more

What a great place! I went here for 3 years and the staff and students are very friendly and considerate. People do tend to focus on work though, so if you're looking for a party school keep looking. I did the co-op program and got some amazing jobs through it. I highly recommend Langara. read more

Smaller class sizes than UBC. Cheaper than SFU. Courses taught by professional instructors, not TAs. Get your first two years here and transfer to someplace that offers a degree in what you want. Only problem is the parking -- they charge as much as UBC, but the parking stalls are too small to hold anything larger than a bicycle. read more

I just completed my first semester in the 2 year Fine Arts Diploma program at Langara after a very lengthy hiatus from school. I looked for several years on Vancouver Island and Vancouver for a program that I felt would not only be comprehensive, expansive and hands-on, but a good fit regarding class size. This year was the first time Langara popped up on my Google search and I have had no regrets. I am not a wealthy person, I left my secure full-time employment and relocated to Vancouver to attend Langara, and at my age, not a move to be taken lightly - so this review is an honest p.o.v about my past and current experiences. First off, I love the campus. Granted, my first 10 days I felt like I was often lost trying to find this room or that office, but there are a number of maps/signs, particularly the first week when student volunteers provide orientation and set up tables to guide the newbies - and anybody on that campus from faculty to fellow students are helpful in that regard if you just ask. Take time to explore the campus, it is beautiful, the architecture, the sustainability features, and there are many places, gazebo's, picnic tables, benches, nooks if you want to steal away for a moment. I saw a review about the cafeteria/coffee kiosks, but there are actually several scattered throughout the campus, my favorites happen to be in the Student Union building ... and if you know when to go, you will not encounter line-ups! As mentioned, a good salad bar in the main cafeteria, excellent bean salad! I save my biggest praise for the faculty of the fine arts program. I had been a practicing artist for some years in one media but wanted to learn and expand into other areas. They are approachable and friendly and exhibit a genuine desire for you, the student, to learn the particular method at hand. Like anything in life, you will get what you give. If you are seriously interested in learning and growing in the arts, these instructors have all the time for you. If you want to approach this half-assed, show up late routinely etc, well... you are not only wasting their time, but that of your fellow peers/students. This isn't high school and hey, it is your dime. I wanted smaller class sizes, and to learn new methods in-depth ... and that is exactly what has happened. You are taken right down to the basics, learning and understand the materials and methods and from there you go onto your project. It is a very hands-on program, expect to get dirty! Seeing the works of other students proves to be very inspiring and creativity is encouraged. The instructors recognize that you are "learning", many of us, how to do a method for the first time. The critiques are thoughtful, participation in these is a must. I have grown from the giving/receiving of the critiques and look forward to more. This program is a must for anyone wanting to build a portfolio. The studio vibe is open and friendly, students coming and going working on their various projects till late in the evening. Students help each other, the environment swings from the hilarious/ irreverent to the studious/nurturing depending on the personalities that are currently there. The studios are open every day, great accessibility outside of class time. Other perks: guest artist speakers every few weeks, portfolio reviews, faculty art event and a number of campus wide events throughout every month to name a few. I look forward to my remaining semesters and am already considering expansion upon completion of my current program into also learning digital media skills and possibly a few business/entrepreneurial courses as well. My only regret : that I can get my Diploma but cannot go for my full degree here, but with the future construction of their new Arts building that may change! I would seek my degree here if it was available. read more

HATE HATE HATE this college! The vibe just sucks, people are so rude and unfriendly, the proffs are horrible a preschooler can teach better then most profs at this school. I will never want to come back to this school. I hated every minute and every second I was there. This school just wants money and the profs purposely fail you just for money. Do not apply to this school you will not get into any courses since the wait lists are beyond full. This college just accepts anyone and everyone but does not have enough classes for all the students. read more

I studied at the courses LEPP. Duration eight weeks. My teacher was Lydia. The lessons were very, very boring and not effective. Teacher Lydia focuses on herself and very poorly explains the educational material. All the students were bored during their studies. I did not get any knowledge from Lydia's teacher. Overall I enjoyed my time at Langara and would've rated higher had it not been for the massive mess up a new employee made on my transcript during my final semester which delayed my transfer to another school by an entire semester. Then there is the lack of professionalism. Overhearing someone say that I'm complaining because I feel entitled to more money back is never a good thing. It was the school's mistake so yeah, I expected to receive a full refund for the services I didn't need or used. At least have the courtesy to put me on hold while you're 'discussing' it with your superior. In the end I got most of it back - the rest wasn't worth having to deal with the woman in the accounts department again. read more

I've taken Cheryl's course at least twice now. She works with cold press soap where I am still working with the whole craft of melt and pour. Make and take home a chamomile face cleanser, aloe toner, almond oatmeal face scrub, face cream, mint tooth powder, mouth wash, solid herbal deodorant, and a sole soother foot gel. Recipes for facial powders, hydrating facial spray, wholesome facial mask and a night repair serum. She also sells a lot of her stuff at various craft fairs, therefore, we're not strangers to each other. Even though I have no intention of doing the whole cold press soap method, I like to learn what is out there. Also I find cold press soaps a dime a dozen at craft fairs. I did appreciate that she showed how to make bath bombs and hair shampoo which is 100% natural and awesome and gentle on my dyed hair. Cost of the course at the time was $100 and includes all materials. It has jumped to $115, however, still an amazing deal. Very interactive and hands on class. read more

I attended Douglas College during my first college semester and transferred to Langara during my second. Personally, I prefer Langara so much more. In fact, I was a little sad when I transferred to SFU. Langara has a larger Asian community but most of them are English orientated. The people there are very nice and if you make an effort to befriend those in your class, you're likely to end up with a good friend. I think some of the instructors at Langara are underrated. I find myself surprise at how some of them are teaching at Langara instead of a university. I'm an English major and the English department at Langara is known to be more challenging than UBC. Overall, Langara is a fantastic college where you can definitely be academically challenged enough for universities. As for eligible transferred courses, it is the student's responsibility to check on BC Transfer Guide and double check with counsellors. So far, all my credits are transferrable to both UBC and SFU. read more
