I don't normally leave comment in YELP, but I felt obligated to balance out some of the negative review which seems a bit unfair to me. I got the best, gold select caviar, which has met my standard as someone who's had a fair amount of taste of caviar in a few restaurants around the world. The caviar is creamy, not too salty, with a bit sweet touch. Pricey, true, but totally reasonable, especially compared to the market price I looked up online. The staff was informative and helpful. Answered all my questions regardless of the stupidity. Will definitely come back for a little treatment. read more

6/24/15: Very cool place!--it's like going to a fancy watch store but for food. They got the dream food stuffs: caviar, truffles, smoked salmon... 1. Candied Smoked Salmon "Jerky" (not exact name) C$?: We came here as part of a food tour, so I didn't catch what the actual name was on display, but this is basically a very sweet salmon "jerky." I've had samples of the same stuff at the farmer's market located next to the Ferry Building in SF, and Caviar Direct's is definitely better tasting and believe it or not, cheaper!!! I forgot the exact price when I asked but I did remember thinking it was about 1/3-1/2 as much as SF's!!!, which I remember was like $40-80 depending on which size you get. Caviar direct's has so much flavor and is so moist--it's the best "salmon jerky" I have EVER had, of any price. 10/10. 2. Truffle in Jar ~C$20 (forgot exact $) for a 1" size: So they have the standard fist-sized versions too which are $100's, but I never knew that this sort of thing existed--little jars of whole truffles, semi-preserved. I just can't bring myself to buy a large one for that kind of money, but I can definitely do $20, which to me is extremely reasonable for this extremely rare edible fantasy! We're back here in America already but haven't had a chance to crack this open yet, so I can't comment on the taste. My gf's still researching what kind of dish we can make with this... but I can't wait! Kinda hard to give a score for a place like this. I can't remember the exact story but caviar was first sold as a joke to rich white people. Who would eat the fish eggs? that's the part you throw out! well, white people were dumber than they thought and it became an extremely fancy delicacy. This place reinforces that fancy-pants attitude with upfront snobbery. I came here last year hoping to surprise my parents with an addition to our christmas dinner, caviar. I had a $30 budget (and for some fucking fish eggs) I thought that was reasonable for a small tin. I asked the fellows working here what they had in my price range and it was obvious that they could barely keep from laughing in my face, the cheapest thing they have is a 50 gram tin for $45 or something. (its not weed so that is actually expensive, its fish eggs) I was taken aback by this extremely rude service for what was a reasonable request, the owner of the shop went on to say how its hard to find anything good for less than $50 in a very condescending tone. He barely tolerated me looking at the rest of his stock, they have a small but sort of diverse selection of extremely over priced fish eggs as well as some "premium" smoked salmon (my redneck cousins probably make it tastier) that was also prohibitively costly. Unless you shit diamonds I would advise not going here and if you do shit diamonds to spend your money on something better. Instead I got 50g of lumpfish caviar at the loblaws for $5, I have asked people who have attended fancy events and eaten premium caviar, they say it is almost the same. (the lumpfish caviar was delicious) I only gave them two stars because it is almost amusing how seriously they take themselves, selling fish eggs out of St, Lawrence markets basement in a crappy market stall, they don't even have a real store. read more

Ever been curious to try caviar? I was for years. I finally grabbed up the nerve, and hit up this little place. It's on the bottom floor of the St.Lawrence Market. Very easy to find. Horrible customer service and RUDE employee! I asked the gentlemen if he had Osetra caviar and he told me that no one does! He said there is only 1 type of caviar available in Toronto and he had it. I found out after that he was lying! I found 6 different types of sturgeon caviar including Russian Osetra caviar and a high end grocery store on Yonge Street. Was recently here to buy some smoked salmon and caviar for a special surprise meal for my Wife. Love this place. Guys know what their talking about, quality was as good as it gets and although I wish the price was a little better, hey, it's caviar and smoked salmon. Saw that other review about "being in the basement of the St. Lawrence Market". Shit, that is what makes this place totally cool! I love that about this place. It isn't some glass palace on Bloor. I live exactly south of the St Lawrence Market and I visit the market daily. I wanted to get sturgeon caviar for a close get together and the only store I've never purchased from was the caviar store. I did my research and found 50g of Canadian Surgeon generally going for $60-$80 for single item purchase. Expecting the store would mark up their product maybe $40 I brought $150 with me to Caviar Direct. I asked kind of Sturgeon Caviar I could get for $150 and he said none. The closest I could get was 30g for Canadian Sturgeon. It completely mismatched my expectations. He suggested a cheaper caviar. When I asked what was the difference he said it was impossible for him to describe to me. I was going to go home and grab more money for the Sturgeon but I did more research and found another place in Toronto called the Caviar Center. They were charging $100 for Canadian Sturgeon Caviar. So I got my buddy to grab a zipcar (which only costs us $20) and we headed to Don Mills into the basement of a commercial building. I was skeptical at first but the service was fantastic. He had a larger selection, could and would tell me the difference between all the kind and I ended up getting 50g Russian Sturgeon Caviar for $200 and it was really worth it. I probably would have purchased from the St Lawrence market if the guy had a better attitude but he detoured me to an even better place. read more

The salmon is spectacular -- we tend to travel a lot and we try smoked salmon wherever we go -- we are sort of smoked salmon addicts. BC has great salmon, but honestly the best best best hot smoked salmon we ever had was in a tiny little middle of nowhere in New Zealand ... and at the St Lawrence market in this store. It is pricey but you pay for quality. This was our first time there and the people were uber-nice. We took two kinds of salmon -- hot smoked and cold smoked and both were yummy, although the hot smoked is more unusual and we liked it slightly better. We are now trying to arrange our schedules so we could drop by the St. Lawrence market more often so we can pick up the salmon. I read the other review and I just wanna say that although I don't eat caviar myself it is an extremely rare and expensive delicacy and appeals to some people who are willing to pay for it. It is not for everyone and there is absolutely no logical reason to expect that it would cost under 30 dollars. read more

One of my favorite gems in Toronto! They have a wonderful selection of smoked salmon, trout, truffles and caviar. My family loves smoked salmon and this salmon is consistently good quality. It's never salty or fishy tasting and it's actually wood smoked, unlike many stores that sell it with smoked flavor (but don't actually wood smoke it). We've seen this store grow over the years (been there 20 years) and we've had nothing but pleasant experiences. The staff is helpful and always friendly. The price is on par for the quality of product and compared to the stores I've been to in Europe, it's actually very reasonable for what you get. My husband is addicted to the Indian Candy and I love the hickory salmon! I recently purchased an excellent truffle oil here and I'm enjoying experimenting with new recipes. I'm planning to purchase the Gold Select Caviar for my husband and I as a New Year's eve treat this year! I would highly recommend this business as it is a must for my family! read more
