Not bad for take away chips and burger. Food prep is slow. Only two people working that day.

Fish was not bad but be prepared to be nickeled and dimed for any extras you might want. Bathroom facilities were pretty filthy.

The sauce was on the side by default, so you can control just how saucy you want to be. It came with a small potato gratin and mixed vegetables. I split a pear, parmesan, and pecan salad with my husband and I also enjoyed that. I'm not a blue cheese fan, so I was happy to see a pear and nut salad with something other than gorgonzola. We got macaroni and cheese for the kiddo, and he loved it. We also appreciated that it came first so we could stave off a hangry tantrum. He also got ice cream and a drink with the kid's menu meal. Service was great - we had a wonderfully friendly server. Chatty without being intrusive, and helpful with recommendations. I probably should have taken her advice on the Shiraz because it wasn't my favorite, but sometimes you just gotta go maverick, right? No. Listen to your server ha ha. It's in a hotel lobby. The space is lovely, but still feels like a lobby. We didn't have much traffic walking through at all, though, and there are lots of choices for seating (tables for 4, 2, sofas, etc). Full bar and a decent selection of wines.

Second time I tried crumbed thinking it may crisp better but it was the same result, soggy in the middle section of crumbs like it had been sitting in oil, that wasn't hot enough. Now I can't work out how this happens. The oil should be hot enough to crisp the batter or crumbs but obviously is not. The owner needs to look at this.

There is a story behind it though and it goes like this. Oceanmaster used to be a chain and they seemed to all follow a formula when making fish and chips. And it was a truly excellente formula. I used to go the one at Surry Hills shopping centre and even one in Canberra if I happened to be there (!) But both of them are long gone. The only one in existence is in Ashbury, in the middle of suburbia - so its no longer a chain. Prior to me Googling Oceanmaster in my attempts to desperately find my fave fish and chip shop, I had no idea where Ashbury is. I will give you a prize if you knew where it was - let me know lol. Its somewhere between Croydon Park and Hurlstone Park in inner western Sydney. And its also on a relatively quiet road, but standalone. Its literally your local fish and chip corner shop. But it is sooo good!! I used to drive deliberately out of my way to come here but it seems I'm on my own there. If anyone else in Sydney knows what Oceanmaster is and has tried it, please back me up!

I stopped in here on a cold, wet day after a punishing hike in the rocky valleys around Blackheath…read more It was inviting: cozy, unpretentious. But I figured it would be a typical small-town cafe, with ordinary fare. I just wanted anything after my exertions. The menu looked ordinary: fish and chips, steak sandwich, beef pie, sandwiches, the usual. But the food was uniformly excellent. I had fish and chips, but the flathead fillets were moist, delicious, and perfectly-battered, not greasy. The chips were obviously made there, and fried just right despite their chunky size. The side salad escaped the default lettuce-and-tomato-and-cucumber throwaway by including sun-dried tomatoes and just a spoonful of wonderfully creamy dressing. With a little pot of garlic aioli to season every bite, I was in heaven. My wife had the steak sandwich and said it was the best she could ever recall having. The meat was thin but still juicy, the onions plentiful and caramelised deep into toffee-territory. Her mint tea was made with fresh herbs, too. For dessert, we each had a chocolate brownie with nuts. It was well-presented on the plate, but a bit cold, just out of the dessert case. They were only to happy to heat them up when we asked, though, and they were delicious. To outward appearances the Wattle Cafe looks like any other cafe, but we found the food quality to be uniformly excellent. It's a super Blue Mountains stop after a hike.
