I didn't throw the dart which always brings me places, I wanted to be sure I was in the mountains, we went North East topside of the Catskills, we wanted to walk Washington Irving's books takes, to see the greens from Douglas Fir to mighty oaks, the silvertip mountain tops and the changing of the leaves. Inside the visitors center, there was Rip, staff in hand, hand me down galligasketts, good natured smile and his walking stick -- there to greet as were Heather and Nancy. Taking bowls of fresh water to the big dog who slipped down like a ranch horse nose deep in the trough they doted upon him, giving love with meaningful strokes and words of tenderness - the big mush was loving it so. Spinny spinny spinny, they spun the brochure carousel like a spinning top, plucking out appropriate endeavors for me. Clicking the pen and put to paper, they wrote and edited to reflect current days and times and where it's shaking out come the weekend. As many miles big road hound and I have traveled, to where the road never ends, these two fine ladies were the watermark set above and beyond all prior - to be sure.

Ok...I really don't know where exactly this is, but if you are going north toward Bear Mountain on…read morethe Palisades Interstate Parkway (if you cross the GWB go towards NJ and you'll see a sign toward the PIP..you'll start at exit 2 so keep goin!), you cannot miss this sign. Its the only "visitor center" posted on some wood or something on that parkway. I know I shouldn't share this with random readers, but I have to explain it for you guys to understand why I reviewed it. I have a weird thing for rest stops and 24/7 gas stations no matter where it is. I have no idea why. Maybe its b/c time seems to fall back at rest stops, or the fact that you stop there in transit and it becomes a community of drivers in one, creepy location. Whatever the reason, I love stopping at these places. So anyone as odd as myself, I had to share. Okay this is no ordinary rest stop. First, if you need to use the john don't bother going here b/c they have port-a-pottys and they do not smell "potty". This is for the sheer enjoyment of going to a random linkin log place in the middle of Rockland County, and saying "hey, I could use a shiny rock." Also, this place closes early. I think 6. Alright so there is the most RANDOM load of fun filled crap here. It's like a local street fair from 1987 threw up here and nobody bothered to clean it up. Finger traps, rock shiners, an assortment of rocks, camoflage toilet paper on a ROLL, candy that belongs in a museum..It's awesome here. It's bizarre and so creepy, but it was friggin super. I think I even bought a couple of rocks (I'm a science nut; what do you want from me?). Anyway, everytime I pass that place I feel like I'm hitting the twilight zone because it sure as hell isn't 2007 over at that joint. CHECK IT OUT!!!!!!

This visitor center is not at all visitor friendly. As I rushed to make sure to arrive here in…read moreplenty of time yesterday to visit during normal business hours only to arrive at 4:01 p.m. and see that they were closed. They are open 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Must be nice. Not only are the hours not so friendly, the parking is atrocious. Unless you're lucky enough to find street parking, you'll either have to risk parking in the hotel parking lot across the street and getting towed, or hope that the four or five spaces around the corner aren't taken and that your vehicle has a very small clearance and you can fit under the awning that juts out. Annoyed as I was, we are staying in the area a few days, so I made sure to return this morning. When I arrived, there was no staff and I looked through the information available myself and found what I wanted. They did have a few cute signs inside, but the center itself is incredibly small. As I was leaving, a staff member did come in and sit at the desk, so I asked them if there was a restroom nearby because the entire visitor center is about the size of my bedroom, and I figured if they had a bathroom I would have seen it. She told me to go outside past the guard and make a left. As I walked out and tried to proceed to the restroom, the security guard told me he would have to search me before I could go back. You'll need to remove all of your items from your person and be wanded and "cleared" before you can use the restroom here. If you think that's uncomfortable, wait until you get into the restroom itself. It was dirty and gross and when I locked the door behind me I saw that there was a secondary door just across from it. That door had a key to lock so I have no idea if that was somebody's office and they might walk in from that direction or if that was a storage closet... Fun right? Then I tried to get some hand sanitizer on my way out, but of course that was empty. Overall I would say this is a very poor excuse for a visitor center. I don't care how historic the building is, the point of a visitor center is to make people feel welcome and want to spend time and money in your city. This is one of the only visitor centers I have been to where I haven't received a warm welcome or help from the staff. They need to do some serious improving.

There are two levels: the first floor is geared more toward younger kids and has several play areas including a fire station/fire truck with dress-up costumes, play-pretend market and cafe, a maker studio, a play room with a train track, foam blocks and some structures, and a couple of other exhibits. The second floor is suitable for both younger and older kids and is STEM focused, with exhibits that demonstrate scientific principles in a fun and educational way. My toddler was so excited to explore everything and could have spent hours in here. I'd say it's best suited for kids under 10. The website says up to 12yo but honestly I think the tweens of today would be quickly bored. Admission is $13 whether for kids or adults (under 1 free). The museum wasn't very crowded, and has seating all around for parents to sit and watch while the children played.
