DO NOT GIVE YOUR DONATIONS TO THIS PLACE…read more THIS IS AN IRRESPONSIBLE AGENCY!!! They solicit donations and DO NOT COME PICK IT UP EVEN AFTER CONFIRMING SCHEDULE!!! My parents received fliers from Make a Wish asking for donations such as household items, toys, etc. Since they were incidentally in midst of moving, they went through things and neatly packaged 10+ large bags of toys and clothing, and household items. They called ahead to schedule a pickup and later also called to confirm and left messages. On the scheduled day (also written on the flyer), they set the items out on the curb during early morning waiting for pickup. Being senior folks themselves, they went through a lot of trouble and carried many bags of heavy items to the curb. Yet the donation pickup NEVER CAME. NO CALL NO SHOW NADA. At the end of the day, they had to go out and drag everything back themselves. With intentions to help and make a difference, they were left disappointed, angry and with an injured back. ORGANIZATIONS LIKE THIS SHOULD NOT BE SOLICITING FOR DONATIONS. THEY CANNOT BE TRUSTED TO PUT THE DONATIONS TO GOOD USE. WE WILL NOT BE SUPPORTING THIS CAUSE AGAIN.

I would suggest donating to Grace Grapevine, they are so kind and more Christ like than the people representing the financial assistance office at CCA. I seen a caseworker at the front desk at Grace Grapevine hugging someone who came in for assistance. They are so nice and patient. I love the positivity they give off. On Monday November 25, 2024 I arrive at CCA at 9am to fill out an application for rental assistance. When you walk in you're required to grab a number. I grabbed my number and I was #51. I didn't have all my documentation ready so I did have to use their printing room while I was waiting to be called. CCA takes walk ins from 9am to 11am (if your number isn't called by 11am then you have to come back at 1pm, as they close the office for lunch from 11am to 1pm.) Unfortunately my number.was not called by 11am so I had to come back. When you return to the office you're required to pull a new number (so you'll have a new place in line.) I got back in line at 11:50am at the front door (first in line.) The doors opened back at 1pm, grabbed my number. My number was called around 1:05pm. I went to the front desk, the rude woman checked to make sure I had all my documents. I was missing my ledger. I requested my landlord send it to me. He was able to send it about an hour later (maybe a little over.) In order to receive an appointment with the caseworker, you have to have all documentation ready. The rude lady looked over my ledger and added it to my documentation in which she kept and created me a file. Now that I had all my documentation, I was given an appointment for Monday December 2 at 9:45am. On Monday, December 2, which is today I arrived at 9:40 AM , spoke with the rude lady at the front to inform her I was there for my appointment. She said "okay you can have a seat." Right as I was about to walk to my seat she got my attention so I turned back around and she asked (while holding my ledger in her hand) "are you more than one month behind on rent, because we're only helping for December..?" I informed her that I was more than one month behind on rent, and that she should be aware of that because she has all my documentation and a form clearly stating that I am more than one month behind. She then says "Well, unfortunately I have to cancel your appointment and we cannot help you. Per our guidelines you can not be more than one month behind. Of course I was disappointed and I told her it was okay for me to only receive one month help, my landlord is doing his best to work with me. I also said to her "You knew I was more than one month behind a week ago. Why would you even waste my time coming up here?" Genuine question. People make mistakes and I would've accepted and appreciated if she told me that she overlooked it, but nope the rude lady got Loud (at a Christian organization..) I'm the only one that should be frustrated, I am behind on my bills and being told they can't help me after spending 8 hours of my life at CCA. I would've rather spent that 8 hours volunteering there because they clearly need more reps assisting the amount of people coming in requesting help. They need loving help. People who have a passion in helping and serving. Although I am sad and very disappointed that I won't be able to get the help that I need. I am more disappointed in the way that I was treated and talk to. Not once did I get loud (raise my tone.) The representative at the front desk needs to be talked to and reminded that that is a Christian organization and she should be a rep representing Jesus Christ. I am being very honest when I say that your donation should go elsewhere. I am a single mother and I am five months pregnant. I am very emotional right now and that lady, that rude lady needs to learn how to talk to people.

Then when they play with you for about three days they will denied any services requested you of all resources that are available they will tell you that there are no funds available. They will humiliate if you not of their cultural. Please be careful with these people.

Today I was blessed with the opportunity to volunteer at Irving Cares with several co-workers. I…read moredidn't know what to expect, and I can tell you it exceeded my expectations. Irving Cares was founded in 1957 to provide relief for Irving residents down on their luck. It is not considered a place to give constant handouts, but temporary help to get back on their feet. Irving Cares provides all of the basics a person will need to provide for the family. It is located in the Human Services building in South Irving. It serves THOUSANDS of families that are in need. The area I volunteered today was the "grocery" department. Kyle, an employee there, is in charge of volunteers and gave us a brief tour through the facility and history of the services. We then got busy with organizing canned food that had been donated. In the storage area, there are aisles of various foods, donated by Irving residents and grocery stores. It was so touching to see how much others care. Something I really liked was that families can come in for donations of food and toiletries a few times per year. This place knows how to motivate them...it is not a permanent hand-out, but a means to get through the rough times. A family fills out the necessary forms, and the volunteers get busy "shopping" with their carts, bagging up the groceries that are allotted to each individual in the family. Irving Cares also provides assistance for occasional rent and other expenses, employment placements, income tax preps, and language classes. In other words, it gives people their pride back that is lost during the low times of life. For any one interested in helping, the pantry is always in need of food. Something they are really desperate for right now is toiletries, especially toilet paper, shampoo/conditioner, and soap. They always provide tickets and info about a variety of local activities such as music, arts, and sports for kids and they host great picnics every May as well. The only problem I have is that we have had 4 different match consultants, so I have never felt like any consultant really known my little and I. I have been a Big Brother to a 9 year old boy for 1 year and 5 months so far and it has been an…read moreamazing experience. We hang out for about an hour once a week unless I'm traveling or sick. Sometimes BBBS gives us tickets to special events or I take him for ice cream but the most important thing I can do is spend time with him even if it's just walking around the park or going to the library. I don't consider myself a stellar role model but just getting consistent attention from a male is something he has lacked and I've seen a lot more stability and happiness in him since we started. A few other people have complained of their match support contact changing but I have had Elizabeth as my contact since the beginning and she has been great. Also, it's important to set boundaries from the beginning otherwise the kids will see how much they can get you to spend on them. But as long as you give them clear expectations on how much time and money you will invest, then when you tell them 'no I'm sorry I can't do that' then they will still trust and love you (even though they may pout). For example, I explained to my Little that it was his Mom's job to provide for him and that, as his big brother, I like treating him occasionally but it is not my role to feed him and if he's ever hungry there is plenty of food at his home. Again, the main thing they need from you is attention on a somewhat consistent basis so you don't have to be a super hero. As I said, this has been awesome and even though there are weeks where I'm exhausted and don't feel like going to see him, we have formed such a close bond that I find myself bragging about how smart and funny he is to all my friends. All systems are flawed so don't expect perfection but overall this is a great program and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to invest a few hours a month to make a lifetime impact on a person.

Yesterday, I was blessed with the opportunity to volunteer at The Main Place. Prior to learning…read moreabout their services through my employer, I had never heard about them. Now, I can share their story to my fellow Yelpers! To begin, The Main Place is a non-profit organization that provides clothing to homeless teens in the area. Their unique motto is "A retail store without a cash register." Let's face it, there are many, many people who do not have a home, a place to call their own. Families live in their vehicles, kids "couch-hop" from one friend's home to another. These kids have no options and are stuck to make the best of their situations. Since there are other organizations that provide assistance, this organization opened to help clothe these teens. The Main Place originally started as a means to provide attire for proms for these kids. If you really think about it, it is such a loving idea. Most of these homeless kids who still attend school wear the same clothes daily, so of course, they would not have nice clothes to attend school dances that we all take for granted. Soon, the organization realized daily clothes are needed, as well. As mentioned prior, The Main Place is non-profit and is SOLELY run by 100% volunteers. NO employees. How it works: school counselors refer these kids to TMP, the kids are given vouchers, and it works by appointments only. The store is divided by little "stores"- a boys and girls dress clothes area, a girls prom wear, casual clothes for boys and girls, and items for infants. What I think is a great idea is that they have those areas that provide nice, dressy clothes that these kids can wear for job interviews. They, too, need to dress to impress. The director of TMP is a gal named Jennifer. Wow, I was so impressed with her. Her excitement was infectious! It was obvious just how much she loves this organization and helping those less fortunate. A couple of families arrived while we were there, and the volunteers got busy helping them, like a personal shopper! They put together entire wardrobes, right down to shoes, jewelry, and hats. It was wonderful to witness the joy on the teens' faces! If you have it in your heart (and closet), I ask that you please help this great, little "store." What they need: new and gently used clothes, shoes, and accessories. And, of course, money to pay for utilities. For those who work in the business world, they really need dressy clothes so these teens can look nice for interviews. Also, they really need new undergarments (would you wear used undies?), socks and shoes--especially ladies shoes that are small, like sizes 5-6. I thank any of you who have read this and I apologize for the lengthiness, there is just so much info to share! And remember, pay it forward!

I'm right where I belong, in the City of Excellence ;) here's the thing... you aren't excellent if you aren't leaning in to help others. I'm passionate about a ton of things, giving back to others is one of the most important. I rescheduled my every 56 days blood donation to a nearby American Red Cross but being in my new town for two weeks seeing all that it gives, I knew it was time to research how I can make an immediate impact. North Texas Food Bank was a result of my research and I'm so excited about today's effort. After relocating I suppose it's quite fitting to select "Pack and Box" it's literally all I'd been doing the past few weeks, why stop now?!! I had the greatest first time volunteer experience. I signed up last night right before bed because and knew I was going to the gym at 6a with my neighbor so I selected the 1p (arrive by 1230p) time slot. Creating a new volunteer account was super straight forward. I was adding this event to my calendar within minutes. I was greeted by the sweetest ladies upon arrival, offered a locker key (wear a fanny pack if you don't have pockets and wish to bring your phone in) as you aren't wearing aprons. I left my phone in the locker. We did a brief orientation, hand washing and then volunteered for our assignments. I've put together a ton of boxes lately, so I opted for packing. I'm not certain I've ever handled so much boxed milk in my entire lifetime! I was first in the assembly line working hand in hand with Apple juice volunteer and let me just say, we did the damn thang!!! It was such a fun experience I never took a single break. My right arm will soon remind me of this fact. We packed 960 boxes, totaling 20 pallets, weighing 28,800 lbs, creating 24,000 meals! I'm a numbers nerd and love the data following your shift. It makes it that much more rewarding. Impact you can see and feel. There were several corporate groups, families and solo volunteers. Everyone was very kind. I'll definitely be volunteering here on a regular basis as my schedule provides. Thank you so much North Texas Food Bank! As a foodie, meals for those in need is a cause I hold near and dear to my heart. Highly recommend if you're looking to serve others. There are a variety of opportunities. I selected this one today but I may explore others in the near future. Hands down a superb way to spend 3 hours, and the warehouse is nice and cool on a warm day.
