Unfortunately, my experience here was really bad. The therapist I saw was very unprofessional, which was very distressing and disappointing, but they don't allow you to switch therapists so I had to leave and try and find another sliding scale therapist. Really bad customer service, and at least 1 really bad therapist. If you have insurance definitely go elsewhere, and if you don't - good luck because you get what you pay for. read more

I write this because I found my own individual therapist at Cathedral almost 10 years ago. That person has left cathedral and I still receive services from them. I reached out about couples services. The intake was....not great. Misgendering and v heteronormative. They asked preference on gender for therapist and I requested female. They did let me know it would be a wait and I said that was fine. They still assigned me a male therapist, which neither myself or my partner is comfortable with. The communication I received from the intake specialist and the therapist was short and rude. The intake specialist would ask a question, then tell me to stop talking (I believe because they were handwriting responses?) It was very off-putting and I am disappointed in the direction cathedral has taken over the years. read more

Cathedral offers therapy/counseling primarily, and has limited psychiatry service. Cathedral has lots of locations, appointment times before and after usual work hours, great front-of-office staff at the main Wabash Ave Center and therapists that deal with all kinds of issues. A major plus is their sliding fees based on income and other financial factors. I benefitted from the sliding fees. Therapist assignments are another matter. First you're assessed by a detailed phone in-take. It can take several weeks to be assigned a therapist who specializes in your area of need. The severity of your case is considered and fast-tracked if needed. All good. I wasa assigned a person who understood my problem and was teaching me specific steps to manage how I reacted in a certain (frequent) situation, They did their job - listening, asking and keeping me on track when I tried to wander off subject. *Then they left the Center with little notice. I was assigned another person who listened, didn't ask anything and didn't try to keep me focused. I ended up talking about little, unrelated things, completely side-stepping the huge elephant of my problem and sole point for being there. I said repeatedly that I'm not on track, not focused thus continuing the harmful behavior. The end for me was receiving a bill for the full rate for missing a session. I'd advised the therapist I'd be missing a session so WTF? The bill arrived two months after the date in question. The therapist hadn't said a thing about missing a session, being billed, nothing that would've allowed me to remind them of the pre-arrangement at the time in question. I dealt with the accounting staff and didn't go back. My advice to the Center's therapists is to communicate actively and openly with clients because losing the one therapist with little notice then being blind-sided by the other with the bill rocked my little world at such bad times. My advice to potential clients is that Cathedral's services are much needed and the sliding fees is a huge help to many but keep track of absences, bills, etc, and don't settle for a therapist who doesn't meet your needs. read more

It's hard looking for a good, competent, and AFFORDABLE therapist. Sure, friends and family give their recs but for a number of reasons that can be awkward. What if you're broke? What if you don't want your insurance company to know you're receiving mental health care? Thank goodness for Cathedral Counseling. Cathedral is staffed by experienced, caring professional therapists and a staff of psychiatrists. Plus they offer sliding scale rates for therapy and pysch evals/med management so you don't have to go through your insurance company and those without insurance can still get affordable care. I've been seeing a therapist and psychiatrist at Cathedral for nearly a year now and I couldn't be more pleased with the quality of treatment I'm receiving. Don't suffer and struggle alone. I found my therapist at Cathedral Counseling to be well-trained and proficient in helping me through a difficult time of finding out my son was an addict. She was a wonderful resource of information in addition to helping me see myself as the person I really am and building on that to live through a very hard time. I would recommend this counseling center to anyone who needs help. She taught me I was more than I thought I was and I can be an independent woman capable of leading a good, productive life in spite of my environment and family problems while realizing others' issues had to be solved by them and not me. I've been seeing a therapist at Cathedral Counseling Center for over a year now, and overall, I'm very pleased. It took me a little while to get an initial appointment, but I think it was worth the wait. My therapist is great, and all of the staff I've met are kind, friendly professionals who know what they're doing. I didn't think it was possible to find good, quality counseling for a sliding-scale fee, but Cathedral has proved me wrong. I only wish I called them sooner! read more

As a follow-up to my review, I eventually found a counselor I was really happy with and felt like I would get great progress. One of the most difficult things about therapy for me is consistency. I actually REALLY REALLY liked my therapist, but it became much more of a time commitment then I was really willing to give and.....the most important thing for me PERSONALLY in counseling is that my therapist not share any enthusiasm about me (sounds strange, right...and this is probably TMI, but I can be a notorious people pleaser just by default, thats the whole reason for my therapy....so I prefer a therapist who doesn't give praise about my abilities to rise above the rubble because then at that point, I feel compelled to constantly and consistently please). I know for a fact that my therapist was genuine, honest, and kind....I started to look at her in a very motherly way and I soon became incapable of being completely honest, blunt, and inane at my leisure. I knew that I needed to end therapy. So I did. My therapist didn't take it well. She became offended. Never offered to transfer me to another therapist, resume at a later date, dig deeper into the fact that I had abruptly quit therapy. Truth be told, she might have figured there are others out there that would be more than happy to take my place. However, her insolence validated why I had quit. There became a warm attachment that I just didn't want. It's very natural to want to please the very people that see us in a positive, warm, and bountiful light...its just how I come off and its very much who I am, but in therapy I don't want praise. It does me no good. I gave this review one star because it hurt my feelings. I gave it a 2nd star only because had I been dealing with something serious, I could have been at risk to myself...and the therapist put her personal emotions before the needs of the patient. I'm not a mental health worker, but I do have a great deal of common sense and I urge mental health professionals to be highly cognizant of every patient regardless of their exterior persona. Overall, I really recommend CCC. Its a great resource when you are uninsured, and require the assistance of a therapist. The staff for the most part are professional. I don't feel like I received any help...but I did enjoy the company quite a deal, but that's not what I was paying for! Try it out. It's worth the time to see if it will fit. Good luck! read more

When the woman asks for counselling, it is the final, last-ditch attempt at making it work. I was the one who demanded we attend, based on a friend's experience. It saved her marriage. It killed my relationship. This is not a complaint, mind you. Therapy made for a more humane euthanizing rather than a back-room-beat-to-death-brawl. In a perfect world, you can find out if you happen to be attracted to an axe-murderer with E.D. who hates animals prior to buying them coffee. Alas, in this modern world you have to date this person to find this out- then go for help when reality sets in and refuses to compromise. I loathe therapy. We are encouraged to talk about feelings. I felt like I was back in brownie scouts singing kumbaya rather than engaging in specific exercises to redeem this flatlining relationship. I listened to stories about his childhood, listened to a list of petty complaints, listened to all this talk about inadequacy... I was expected to talk about my long-past childhood and my mother's alcoholism- though it is not a problem I acquired. All of my experiences were being milked for maximum "feeling" no matter how far past. These "feelings" manufactured more appointments. What of it? All the talk about "feelings" numbed me and that was it. Over. It was like having a shot of novocaine to kill all emotion not linked to immediate self-preservation. I was done playing the perfect girl to this man and profoundly disgusted with this supposed treatment. That numb, lack of feeling isn't going away either. read more

Wonderful counseling center offering professionals with more than 20 years in the field. They've moved to a brand new suite downtown on Washington and the atmosphere when you walk in is comforting and professional. They offer sliding scale fees for people with lower income starting at $40 a session. I know there are other conseling centers out there with lower sliding fees but a lot of those places pair you up with non-certified individuals who are either still in training or just not as well qualified. For the sake of your mental health I would recommend this place. The counselers are caring and very experienced individuals who will take good care of you. read more

I've been to both individual and couples counseling here. The staff cares about those who come here. Dealing with depression and anxiety, and having a boyfriend who also has some depression, caused us to seek treatment here. My individual counselor is wonderful and is helping me deal with some issues I've had. The first couples' counselor we saw was not a good fit for us -- but we asked for a new counselor, and she has been great. read more

I saw a therapist here off and on for several years, and in hindsight am surprised I stayed for so long. I suffer from depression, and as my condition worsened, my therapist became increasingly cold and unsympathetic, to the point that after our sessions I would feel immeasurably worse. Telling him this did nothing to change his approach, and when I found myself contemplating suicide after two sessions in a row, I finally terminated our relationship. I guess this tells me that at a sliding-scale place, you get what you pay for. I entirely regret paying for a therapist who ultimately proved damaging to me. read more

At first I was very pleased to be seen by a counselor whom I thought was intelligent and experienced...but I discovered fairly soon that the counselor (an MSW, not a PsyD, though I had specifically asked to see a PsyD based on my past experience) only had the most obvious & standard suggestions and comments, and had little to offer me. I've had quite a bit of therapy over many years and certainly needed to see someone, but this was disappointing. My history and "issues" are complex, and needed more insight and creative thinking. It was more expensive than I could really manage, and I wouldn't be eligible to request consideration for a low-income discount, but eventually I decided to quit because of the expense coupled with the lack of value in the counseling I was given. When I said on several occasions that I would need to quit, the counselor repeatedly pressed me to ask my siblings to give me a loan or to pay the bill outright (which I wasn't in a position to ask); now I have to wonder whether the counselor simply wanted to keep a full-paying client longer.
