Metro Bowl is a local bowling place where you can do candle pin bowling. What is candle pin bowling…read moreyou ask? Well it is similar to regular bowling but with a few different variations on the rules. The bowling pins themselves are tall and thinner, that are supposed to resemble the shape of candles (thus the name). Also the bowling ball you use is smaller with no holes in the ball and you are supposed to hold the ball in your palm and then throw or release it in the lane (in hopes of knocking over the pins). Players get 3 chances to knock down the pins instead of 2 chances in regular bowling. The pins are not cleared away until you are done with the 3rd chance to knock down those pins. Candle pin bowling actually was invented in Massachusetts and is played in some New England states (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine) and Eastern Canada. When looking for things to do in Boston, the idea of candle pin bowling came up, which really peaked my interest. And so on a rainy Sunday, my husband and I ended up coming to Metro Bowl. The reason why I picked Metro Bowl was because of their Sunday special where you can play either Cosmic (candle pin) bowling or regular (candle pin) bowling for an unlimited play of 2 hours between the hours of 6- 10 pm on Sundays for only $15 per person (that also includes shoes). There are 2 different areas for either type (regular and cosmic) of bowling in case you are wondering. So we came in a few minutes before 6 pm and bowled for 2 hours. We were able to bowl 9 games I think in that time frame. If we were lucky to get a strike on the first try or pick up the spare, there would be this little animation cartoon on the scoreboard screen to celebrate your strike or spare. There would be a different little animation each time and we always looked forward to seeing what it would play. Most of them were pretty silly but brought a smile to our faces when we watched them. After playing candle pin bowling, I will say that it is harder than regular bowling. You don't knock down pins with momentum like you would in regular bowling so the game itself really relies on strategy because it is much harder to knock down those pins. Same for duck pin bowling (where it is popular in Northeast states and the Mid Atlantic area. If you want to know, the first time I did duck pin bowling was in Charlotte, North Carolina). The manager was helpful to teach us how to use the machine at our lane since we had never played candle pin bowling. She was very kind to make sure we felt comfortable and told us if we have any other questions, she would be more than happy to help out. We both really enjoyed ourselves and would come back if we lived in the area. Please note that Metro Bowl also has a restaurant on site in case you are hungry. Also the restrooms were clean during our visit.

One thing is for sure, there is a TON of things to do here. It was a little overwhelming for me because I wasn't super comfortable sitting around and not always seeing where the kids were (kudos to the parents who can do that). They're kids, so staying in one area longer than three minutes is impossible lol. There are different sections, lots of jumping areas, and many slides. The party area was packed. There were a lot of birthday parties happening. I noticed they have 9 party rooms, plus additional tables outside for parties without rooms, which added to how crowded it felt. At one point, they closed one of the areas because someone lost something and they had to search for it, which was inconvenient since that's where the kids were playing and were actually there longer than 3 minutes lol. There's also a lot of young (20 and under) staff working, which is interesting. They're present, but overall felt pretty hands-off, especially given how packed the place was. I also used the women's bathroom and out of 5 stalls, 4 didn't have toilet paper. The bathroom itself wasn't very clean and felt poorly maintained. When we went to get drinks, there was a long line and only one person working the front desk, so it took a while just to pay which cut into the allotted time for the kids. All that said, the kids enjoyed it. My son had been here before and wanted to come back with his cousin. He especially loves the soccer area, which was a big hit for him doing it is his favorite sport. I wouldn't say I wouldn't come back, but there is definitely room for improvement, especially with maintenance and staff being more attentive to the areas they're responsible for.

First, I want to say make a reservation for one of their interactive game room on their site before your visit. I made a reservation for a 60 and a 30 minute game for a total of a 90 minute experience. My son chose Party Box and The Floor is Lava. When you arrive, the person checks you in and you wear a head piece and move your entire body to solve physical challenges and puzzles. All three walls are interactive. Because the instructions go rather fast, I stayed in the room and helped the kids with instructions. Party box was like 10 different games and puzzles that were appropriately challenging for the 12 year olds in the room. They had to be aware of their bodies in relation to their character on the screen. The Floor is Lava is like the television show but more achievable. Bottom line: This is a really fun place and the games are physical virtual reality experiences that I would prefer over sitting at home with video games. Families can have a really great time and this would be a great place for a date! The young lady who was working that day was running the place single-handedly. There was a fire drill while we were there and we had to exit and wait for the mall to let us back in. I think her name was Chanel, and she was a picture of calm. When she let us back in, all the servers had to be restarted and this delayed us about 45 minutes. Despite everyone being in this woman's space and asking questions, she stayed pleasant and poised. She deserves some recognition for that. It was a lot to manage so I stayed out of her hair. But other people were not as gracious and this was totally out of her control. When a game is over, the room records a fun TikTok style video for your party. I would come back often. The cost for 90 minutes was about $50 a person but that is comparable to other gamebox places and I like the physical aspects of the space. My neurodivergent children enjoyed the experience immensely, even with the Fire Drill.

The back party space was decorated beautifully with a fun Happy Birthday theme. They were very "hands off" and aside from getting the Squid Games started in 2 of the boxes, they simply left us alone until we asked for more plates for the cake. Fun entertainment for both young and old. Prior to their party, we came here on a separate visit to do a FREE demo of Squid Game, which allows you to try out a game for approximately 15 minutes. We ended up having so much fun that we committed to the full hour of gameplay. We can't wait to come back and try out some of their other games like Psychedelic Mansion, The Floor is Lava, Angry Birds, and their latest edition, BATMAN!
