I didn't catch the cat's name when I was there, but Vintage Shop Kitty is super friendly and seemed to be receptive to pets. Besides cats, this place also has some really cool clothes -- all of them old, and all of them carefully curated and thoughtfully chosen. I can tell when a vintage clothing store has done its due diligence when I flip through the racks and I want to buy more than a few things. I was THIS close to buying a Western pearl snap shirt, but really: how many pearl snap shirts does a girl need? Regretfully, I put the shirt back on the rack. Hopefully, some other savvy person snapped it up. The Odd Shop has a lot of clothing, but it has just as much vintage toys, records, ephemera and trinkets for sale. Walking into the store is like walking into your (or probably my) childhood, because there are so many things from the 1980s and 90s for sale. So many Smurfs dolls! Mickey Mouse roller skates! Fleur de Flea is as much of an experience as it is a shopping spot. There are several midcentury modern furniture booths, as well as others selling all manner of art, jewelry, books, clothes, records, plants and more. On my most recent visit, I came away with a book of the script of a show I really love and a fun T-shirt. Fleur de Flea also sells cocktails and other drinks if you'd like to sip while you shop, and it's very pet friendly. You're likely to see a pup shopping alongside its owner, and Fleur de Flea's resident doggo can be found sitting on the counter by the cash registers. They have a superb selection of the things from books to music on several formats, more books, pins, magnets, stickers, and ephemera. I love ephemera. I really love the chance to buy something that wasn't mass produced or to give something a new life. It kills me that you can buy similar shirts at the big box store and have no idea what it's about which tells me I'm old. Also the lighting in there is not oppressive. This store has a lot of male energy to it -- it's mostly clothing that's related to sports, music, colleges and pop culture. I found a few things that I would have loved to take home if they weren't so big on me. That's the thing with 812 Vintage: it's mostly for adults, or kids who are as big as adults. I didn't see little-kid clothes here. The prices are about what you'd expect for a vintage store like this, although I did see some stuff on sale. I had to tell my kid a couple of times that no, we would not be spending $115 on a t-shirt. But you're paying for quality here, because the clothing has been curated and well-taken-care-of, so you're not pawing through racks of old clothes that are missing buttons, visually stained, olfactorily displeasing or should have been tossed. The store itself isn't huge but it's bigger than it looks from the outside and there is a great selection of things for sale. I was very impressed with most of the prices that I saw because honestly they seemed pretty reasonable compared to what I typically see at vintage/thrift stores these days. They were even having a sale on swimsuits! The lady working was also friendly and offered her assistance but also left us alone to peruse which I always appreciate. When back there be sure to look in the rafters for some old school child terrorizing animal mascot heads that are fun to check out. On our trip here my oldest found a 50s retro looking swim suit that she fell in love with. It was reasonably priced so we made the purchase. Overall a pretty cool shop that was fun to browse and brought a blast from the past feeling for me personally. Only strange thing was there was rack with an old uofl mascot hoodie my second oldest wanted but it wasn't priced yet so they simply said "not for sale".

For those unfamiliar with their mission, The Mustard Seed is a relatively new (founded in 2016) organization that is primarily dedicated to aiding survivors of childhood abuse. They maintain a wider variety of inventory than most other thrift stores in the area, are exceptionally fair with their pricing and have a delightful sense of atmosphere to boot. In short, it's the kind of organization that deepens your appreciation of Indiana as a whole. The Floyds Knobs store is more spacious than Sellersburg's and has recently undergone some further expansion/renovation. I get the sense that this location has the edge when it comes to clothing, housewares and artwork, while the Sellersburg store is perhaps a bit more robust when it comes to media and toys. At any rate, so long as you follow their posted advice and do not (under any circumstances!!) attempt to donate any fire-breathing dragons, a visit to either Mustard Seed is bound to boost your mood. (The free coffee definitely doesn't hurt.)

This was not an isolated incident--after being treated rudely on a recent prior visit, this latest experience confirms a clear pattern of poor customer service. I was genuinely shocked to be treated with such a total lack of basic respect during a visit a full hour before the store was scheduled to close. The employees were extremely rude, barking orders in a harsh tone regarding the coffee bar, fitting room, and bathroom. When I tried to step outside for just a second, an employee snapped that if I left, I would not be allowed back in--with a full hour remaining before closing. Staff hovered over me constantly, creating an aggressive atmosphere that made it clear paying customers were viewed as an unwanted inconvenience. To treat customers with this level of open hostility is entirely uncalled for and unacceptable. Management needs to address the severe, systemic lack of professionalism at the Floyd's Knobs location. I left stunned by the experience, and I will definitely not be back."

We have dropped donation items off at this location several times in the past few years and…read moreappreciate how easy it is, as well as the mission of this business. There are several locations, and this one is located in the Hamburg area near Tractor Supply as a landmark. The drop off is on the right hand side of the building and can pull up and employees will collect the donated goods. They have signage directing where to enter the single drop off lane. There are also posted signs listing what can and cannot be donated. Staff are polite and helpful. I have not been inside the building or made a purchase to this point, so I cannot comment on that aspect of this business. I do know that the mission statement has been to sell donated items and then to utilize those funds to assist victims of abuse, which has our support 100%. (Side note: I also choose to donate here rather than at another specific well known charitable drop-off site which has high prices and high administrative costs, resulting in less funds going to the people it claims to serve.)
