Casino Dec 2025

Beautiful Art Deco building, now a movie theater/event space. Must see if you visit Catalina, if you are cruising in, wake up before dawn to get a breathtaking view of this building lit up. Interior tour is about $20 and well worth the price of admission.

One of the coolest theaters I've ever been to, and an architectural marvel. The building is really impressive and makes an immediate impression from the moment you first see it coming into the harbor. The inside is a hodge podge of some of the most interesting architectural styles of the past several hundred years. As you walk up to the theater area, you come to a number of huge almost Roman looking murals outside. Great colors and characters in those. As you enter the theater section, you aren't ready for how fascinating the main theater area really is. There's a 360 degree mural in there and the theater itself is circular shaped. Very impressive and hits you immediately. There's also a beautiful terrace and ballroom on the top floor that have a mission and Roman influence and art deco influence as well. When we went on a Sunday afternoon, it was pretty empty and there were a few minutes where we were the only people in the room. Pretty cool for what this is. The terrace has the best views you'll get on the island without hiking a mountain. Worth the trip!

Price to go in to see what the casino is all about

Background On Catalina Casino: The Catalina Casino, which dominates Avalon's harbor, isn't a casino in the traditional sense. Built in 1929 by chewing gum magnate William Wrigley Jr., the Casino was never intended for gambling. Instead, it was created as a hub for entertainment and social gatherings. The word "casino" itself comes from the Italian word meaning "gathering place" or "social club," which perfectly describes the purpose of this iconic structure. Before it became the Catalina Casino, the location was home to a simple dance pavilion known as the Sugarloaf Casino, built in 1920. This structure served as a modest entertainment venue where visitors could enjoy live music and dancing. However, as tourism on the island grew, Wrigley saw the potential for something grander and more sophisticated, leading to the construction of the Catalina Casino that we know today. Location: Not that hard to spot this landmark. Just follow Crescent Ave. which splits off to St. Catherine Way. Ambiance/Decor: Has this creepy, but neat place vibe. Art deco design. Entertainment: 1) You can do a self tour and explore the avalon theatre, wrigley ballroom (There was a roller rink setup in this room when we visited), and ocean promenade (Nice view of avalon and the architecture design) for $19.50. 2) If you like to partake in the VIP backstage tour, you can do that one ($38.50). Includes a guided experience, exploring the theatre dressing rooms, producers' viewing gallery, cinema projection booth, exclusive access, and includes general admission. Catalina Casino For Thought: Might be a long while, but I would love to patronize this place again and hopefully watch a movie/attend a concert.

So amazing!! We made a reservation online for roller skating in the ballroom. It was our first time visiting and the staff member out front was so helpful in directing us all the way up to the ballroom. On a Friday afternoon, there were very few people skating!! It was so nice to have some room -- I'm used to packed roller rinks! Some big band style music played over the speakers and really added to the unique atmosphere. Once we were decidedly covered in sweat, we returned our skates and explored the rest of the Casino. It was breathtaking! I only wish they had a gift shop! I wanted some sort of trinket to remember my visit by. The staff member on the way out recommended some stores on the island that she had seen Casino themed Knick knacks in, which was so nice, but I wish there was one onsite.

The Catalina Casino is a truly historical treasure that is worth visiting if you are in Catalina. It is easy to do a self-guided tour of the site. Just buy an admission ticket and they will provide you with plenty to read and listen to. It took us about 45-60 minutes to enjoy Catalina Casino (not an actual casino gamblers!) The part I found fascinating was it was a Chicagoan (Wrigley) bringing this to life and that the Cubs used to spring train here. I grew up in San Diego and how I never spent any time on Catalina is beyond me. Trust me, if you love architecture or art deco or even just immersing in the past... a stop is worth it.

October 25 & 26, 2024 | Catalina Island: The Avalon Theatre at The Catalina Island Casino is absolutely breathtaking! What a glamorous way to see a movie, as you relax underneath the 50-foot domed ceiling, surrounded by beautiful murals! There's even a gorgeous organ at the front of the theatre! I hear that sometimes someone is actually playing before the movie starts! Imagine that! Lights, Camera, Action: Before the movie, a short clip of the cartoon Popeye was playing, super cute! I saw House on Haunting Hill in black and white on Friday & Hocus Pocus in living color on Saturday night, just in time to celebrate Halloween! Both movies were entertaining! Tickets: $16.50 Super friendly customer service as your tickets are taken before the movie! You can also order tickets online! There is also a concession stand stocked with goodies to eat and drink! Casino: In Italian means gathering place! You won't find any gambling here, but you will find the most beautiful theatre & with an old world ambience! It was built in 1929! The Theatre also Includes a step and repeat in the lobby, with lighting on both sides, perfect to take a snapshot or two! The lobby is also very moody with plush sofas, chairs, and beautiful, lighting! Being there is an experience in itself! Be Our Guest: The seats are so plush & stylish, especially with details on the end seats! Plenty of seating, as there are over 1,800 seats! Overall: I recommend seeing a movie and/or taking a tour of the Casino, as it's a beautiful place that will have you in awe! I loved it & looking forward to returning, as movies are here on the weekends! Happy Halloween!

We did a tour with Rebecca. It was so amazing to see and learn about 100 year old history of the Casino Building. She was a wonderful guide. I loved her singing the song about Avalon at the end of the tour. If you have an hour, let Rebecca show you and tell you all the wonderful history of the Island and all the details about the Casino.

Empty areas being cleaned

The worst possible experience. Nothing but watching a clean up crew in dark and dingy areas. It was not made clear upon entry that there was no re-entry and nothing was open or functional inside. We walked around in the dark and saw everything in 5 minutes. We did ask for a refund and we were told we were out of luck.

I'v always loved this gorgeous landmark on Avalon bay. They have casino tours daily and movie showing at the Avalon theatre on weekends. We attended the 50th anniversary NYE gala at the grand ballroom. The event was truly one of a kind and so much fun! Party goers were dressed glamorously and the crowd was classy & upscale. The entire event was very well organized from the beginning to the end. The food was buffet banquet style and served all night long. I enjoyed salads and soup very much. Everyone else loved the prime ribs and tiramisu. The NYE decorations were amazing, since this is a historic place so everything looked grand and beautiful in vintage style! The live band was very entertaining, dance floor was huge and packed all the time. The midnight balloon drop was so much fun to be part of. Our family had a great time and all staffs were amazing the entire evening. The night views of Avalon bay from the balcony was a nice touch to the lovely evening! This is such a special experience, definitely one of the top NYE events I'v ever attended! A very happy way to start year 2024!

If you are not on a tour, you can pay an entry fee to do a self guided tour. Beautiful art deco architecture. Start at the entry and look up to see the detail painting on the walls and ceiling. Once inside you're transported back in time. Enjoy the hallway before entering the theater. Walk up the ramp to the second level and enter the Marine Bar where there is a short film on the history of the casino. Continue up the ramp to the ballroom. The ballroom is now a roller rink with music from the 20's. Walk out onto the balcony around the entire casino. Enjoy the view of Avalon.... And don't forget to look up at the ceiling.

Experiencing this beautiful piece of Art Deco architecture exceeded every expectation. It is stunning and the views of Catalina are unrivaled. Such a fantastic piece of California history. Definitely worth the admission!

The Green Room

We had a VIP 1.5 hour tour of the casino by Paul and it was a 5+. Very knowledgeable and took his time with the many questions we had about the island and casino history. Thanks Paul for a great tour!

What a beautiful place to visit!!! It was a beautiful walk to get there along the bay with the palm trees. We got our tickets to go inside and the first floor is an old movie theater with movies playing. The theater was lovely and had paintings around it. We then walked up to the ballroom which was amazing as well. During summer weekends they have events in the ballroom in the evening for all ages. Walking the outside on the top floor was great because of the different views. I would absolutely recommend visiting here for the history and beautiful views!!

Are there tours in the evening?

Hello and thank you for your inquiry! The Casino is only open during the day, at the moment.

It will be my first time visiting the island. Do you have to sign up for a tour or can you do a self guided tour? Also, how do we get there from Crescent Ave? Walking? Golf cart options?

The Casino is closed and locked; while the outside of the Casino is worth half an hour to an hour just walking around and admiring the detail on your own, the interior offers even more delights.… Read more

Is it pet friendly?

I wouldn't think so. Lots of stairs and old time artifacts. You're in a close group with others and it's a long tour.

My wife and I would like to move to Avalon someday but we are looking for an affordable apartment attached with a job, plus my wife and I are looking to do our 40th Anniversary there?

There is also a "Circuit" ride share that will take you around the island for $2 per person. Coming in by tender from a cruise ship is great. The docking area is in town and so close to everything. I exited the tender and walked along the waterfront where I passed a few children's playgrounds with a pirate theme. Then on to where the golf carts are rented. I walked to the pier (Green Pier) where there are bathrooms and many small shops all hoping for the tourist business. They carry the typical port souvenirs. After a long walk on this short pier I got to the end where there is many people fishing with poles and the little set ups they will sell you for a few dollars and the bait too. There are plenty of benches to sit and watch the boat come in and out of the harbour. There is a small beach area that has lots of pretty colored little rocks along the shoreline. The walk to the round Casino Building is pretty much the end of the road before a mountainside resort. I passed by some waterfront restaurants that were even crowded on a cloudy day. The interior vineyard is so beautiful. The trips were very enjoyable but a bit of too much sun for me. Wear sunscreen and a hat to prevent sun exposure! Keep in mind that it takes 20 years to be able to buy a real car on island. Only one golf cart is allowed per residence. There are no spaces for real cars and more golf carts in Avalon. Our family and friends live here so they have a real car to take us to interiors. Yes you will need a real car to do that! Avalon has enough restaurants and bars to hang out. Casino is also a movie theater to show older movies on certain weekend evenings. They offer tours of this historic casino too. They host NYE gala every year. Beach club is great for summer times. Museum is small but still worth taking a tour. Too bad the spa has closed down, we used to go there all the time. This island has so much to offer. We wanted the same experience and the same room. We got a Studio Suite room in the back of the hotel in the upper private area. The last time we stayed here, our room seemed bigger, and I was a bit disappointed about how small the room seemed compared to last time, but we ended up really enjoying our stay. The room was clean, although housekeeping did not clean our room the first time we asked the front desk. Before our third and final night, we went up to the front desk and told them we were extremely upset our room was not clean the day before when we had asked them to clean it so they promptly came up and cleaned our room. The linens were clean, white, and fresh and the robe was nice though short. The towels were comfy and clean and they gave us more towels when our room wasn't clean the second night we stayed after we asked them. The outside the patio was amazing. We had a gorgeous view of the city behind us and the ocean in front of us. We loved to sit outside in the comfy chairs and just soak up the view and drink coffee/tea that was provided for us with a Kuerig machine. We had plenty of free water bottles and ice and kept asking for more and more because we drink like fish and they gave it to us all for free. The room had a couch and a little table, but the table was too short for my husband to use his laptop. He said he would have liked a bigger table, but we made do with what we had. Also, there were no nightstands in the room and the closet space was very, very small, just a small wooden box in the room with only enough space to hang our jackets. There were no real drawers to place our clothes in so we left them in the luggage the entire time. The bathroom was made of beautiful Italian marble with a large bathtub that we filled to the top with warm water for our nightly bath soaks. The only thing we didn't like about the bathroom was that the toilet was right next to the wall, giving us little room to sit and do our business and the sink had no area around it to place our bathroom essentials except for a really, really small glass area above the sink to place our toothbrushes. We took really long naps while we were there with the air conditioner on full blast and really loved our bed. It was sooooo comfortable. Also, our room had a refrigerator where we placed food we bought from the market and left over food from the restaurant. We are definitely coming back again to the Bellanca hotel for a simlar Studio Suite room, hopefully next time, a bigger one light last time, but even though there were things we didn't like about this room, we may request the same room again because the view outside looking towards the ocean was amazing. Oh, and the hotel gave us two free drink vouchers worth $15 each for mixed drinks at the Naughty Fox which we used and enjoyed.

Had the pleasure of being invited to a wedding here last weekend. Dropped by for the rehearsal (my husband was a groomsmen) and stayed a second time for the actual wedding. Gosh, this venue is amazing! The mood is ethereal and the vibe is clean, organic, zen and natural. Settings such as these are oh so rare. Pros: - Outrageously beautiful. - Super clean. - Well maintained inside and out. - Spectacular view of the water. Almost panoramic. - Lovely second level outdoor deck with views. - Very cool indoor space on the first level. The open floor plan includes a living/ entertaining area, kitchen with high end appliances, and full bathroom. The bathroom was large and completed with quality craftsmanship and materials. Ideal space to host a bridesmaids pre-wedding breakfast and big enough for all to get ready together. The space itself is large enough to host a good sized bridal party without feeling cramped. Could also be used as storage for wedding reception supplies. - Additional second floor guest bathroom. - Despite the rectangular layout, venue can hold quite a lot of guests. Wedding I attended was around 100. Cons: - Incredibly steep driveway and walkway to get to the location. Those who have issues with walking or stairs will have a hard time walking up to the site. Believe me- I'm born and raised in San Francisco and this baby was ridiculously steep. Some wedding guests had to be driven up and down in golf carts. - Many, many, many stairs. There are more stairs through the private ceremonial entrance than there are through the main entrance (which is the brick staircase in front of the building). Again, for those who have issues with stairs it's something to consider. - Felt a little chilly in February. Overall, I'll never ever forget this special place and I feel blessed to have been invited to enjoy such a whimsical ceremony here. Hands down one of the most unique venues I've ever experienced. Highly recommend!

This was the only venue we looked at so I'm not sure if this just a normal experience, but it's a pretty pricey venue and it seemed like what we paid for only got us the air to breathe and tables and chairs that looked like they belong in a retirement home. With $500 here, $400, here, $350 here, etc. we did turn it into a beautiful wedding space. After signing the contract and paying a deposit, there was a total lack of communication in regards to planning the wedding and what the venue needed/when. I was told I would be assigned an official event coordinator would work with our chosen wedding planner 3 months before the wedding date. Obviously a ton of planning needs to happen before then, and during that time I was just being bounced around between 3 or 4 girls who were all very nice, but none of them seemed to know what was going on. I'd have to do several follow up emails/calls to get an answer in the first place, and then the answer would completely vary depending on who was giving it to me. I asked several times about the tasting and how that works and got nothing, until I asked again and was told I needed to do it withing 2 weeks because then the high season starts and they won't hold a tasting then. Additionally, I could only do it on a Tuesday or Thursday between those 2 weeks. We scrambled and made one of those days work and confirmed (I have several emails saying I'm confirmed for that date, how many people would be with me, etc.) Then when I asked a couple questions closer to date about when to be there, I was told that we weren't confirmed for the tasting and they had another event running.... and that it wasn't confirmed because I didn't give them our tasting menu selections even though they never asked for it. I was furious as their catering contract is pretty high priced and it didn't seem fair to miss out on the tasting due to their lack of communication. The squeaky wheel gets the grease and we made it work. Moving forward, I dealt with a lot of the same thing. The only way to get answers or get anything done was to get pissed at them. We did a walk through with our planner (which again almost didn't happen for the same reason as the tasting), and the girl that did the walk through with us barely had any answers for our questions. We asked very normal questions regarding what speakers are provided with the venue, what's the deal with lighting, etc. "I don't know, I'll find out" was the common answer, but she didn't write a single thing down on her paper and I think you can guess whether or not I got those answers from her.... When we were just a week out, she asked me to fill out a template with table assignments. The template only had me provide the number of each type of meals - Example- Table 20: 4 chicken, 3 short rib, 3 fish, 2 veggie, etc. I specifically called my event coordinator and asked if I need to assign the specific seats at each table to my guests and associate the names/seat with their meal choice. She said no, they just need to know how many of each meal at each table and that's it. On my wedding day, I was getting my hair and makeup done and now she's calling me freaking out about not knowing which meal goes with what person and at what specific seat. So annoying! Those are just a few examples of how unorganized and unprofessional they are. As for the price - maybe all venues are like this. But I was just really surprised at how high we paid to just use the venue, but that we had to pay a few hundred dollars for everything else to turn it into a wedding space. $500 to remove lounge furniture that didn't actually need to be moved, $250 for bar tenders (even though the bar packages were expensive enough), first I was told $500, and then $400 to use the projector that lives on the ceiling there (which they didn't even know how to use and almost wasted our time with creating that slide show), $250 for the dance floor, etc etc etc. I wanted one of my best friends who's an excellent baker to bake us a cake. Then just a week before the wedding, they said they needed license/insurance from the baker and for me to sign a waiver (I realize that this may be standard, but why so last minute?) She didn't have license/insurance because the cake would come from her kitchen. So I had to scramble and figure something else out just days before. I was interested in their ice cream bar which they wanted to charge $20/person! On what planet have you seen ice cream that is $20/person? And it was only chocolate and vanilla, probably from Vons! Obviously my guests have no idea how much the whole event cost and how unorganized the venue was, so to them, the wedding was a blast and was beautiful. I had a great time. But I just want other people to know what you're getting yourself into if you do choose to have your wedding here.
