Showed up Saturday with no camp spot but met some cool new friends on the lake and were welcomed into their campground. Park Ranger gave us some hassle about it but we paid our $13 per car and he let it slide. The place was pretty packed, despite serious bear warnings and half the campground being closed due to a roaming and pissed off mama bear. We were super meticulous about food prep, putting everything back into the cars (a 10min walk away) when done. Since a baby bear had tore up a tent a few days earlier (in our exact spot!), and was sadly shot because of it, warnings were strict about what to keep in the campground, though not everyone around was taking the directions seriously enough. We put away our cooking stove, gas canisters, soap, lip gloss, sunscreen, even the clothes were wore to cook - as advised. Once we had this back under control we could kick back and enjoy this great site. A couple graveley beaches fill up fast with sun seekers while others float by on blow-up toys and meandering logs. Great relaxing weekend overall. Have to say we were the loudest group, even though music was off at 10PM. Seemed everyone may've been tired from too much sun and turned in early.

Love, love, love Cat Lake! It's $15/site each night. If there isn't a fire ban then you can buy wood from the Rangers by the arm-load ($8) or wheelbarrow ($25). There's a 2km logging road off of the highway to get to the parking lot. The road is kind of rough, so it's a good idea to take it slow. The road is best suited to trucks/Jeeps/SUV type vehicles but can be driven up in a car if you take it easy. The parking lot often fills up fast, but there is an overflow lot as well as parking along the road. You can't drive in to the sites, so be prepared to carry in your gear. There are sites 5min from the parking lot, but they get claimed quickly and you could find yourself walking most of the way around the lake. The camp provides a few wheelbarrows to help with packing in/out, but you can't count on getting one if it's busy. If you camp at Cat Lake you need to be Bear-Aware. There are bears in the area, and they have had serious problems with campers and bears in the past. All food items, cooking supplies, toiletries, clothes worn while cooking should be kept either in your car or in one of the many bear caches provided. Garbage and recycling should be disposed of in their respective bins and not stored in the caches. It takes a little bit of extra time to keep your site bear safe; however, when a bear's life (and your safety) depend on it, then it's not a big thing to take time out of your routine to do. The lake is fantastic for swimming May-September. There are a few docks and a rope swing. Cat Lake has a reputation for being a party site. Rangers are trying to change that, and in the 10+ years I've been going there I've noticed that it has gradually become much more family oriented. I'm not sure if that's due to the effort of the Rangers, the fact that the partiers of the past are coming with their young families now, or some combination of the two. Bring toilet paper! The outhouses are almost always out of toilet paper. Most campers at Cat Lake are friendly and the overall feel is very fun and relaxed.

So we found Backroads, which offers pedal boating, which was the perfect activity. At $110/hour, it's more expensive than taking a kayak or a canoe (which I believe is $99) and doesn't seem as popular (there were only 2-3 pedal boats). We got there on a Friday at around 10:30 in the morning and it seems the most popular option was the kayak. But pedal boating was perfect for us. First, you go to the kiosk and put down a credit card. Then, you head over to a shed to pick up your life jacket, and depending on which boat you're taking, the crew will let you know the instructions and where to go. We took the boat for about an hour, which was enough time for us to go around the lake with some breaks in between. When you're done, you row back to where you launched, return your life jacket, and go close out the bill. Overall, it was kind of pricey but it was a fun experience being out on Lake Alta. Tip - no parking lot. There's only residential street parking, which wasn't plenty but we were still able to nab a spot at that hour. Bathrooms are actual stalled bathrooms and are pretty clean.

We paddled for 6 days and camped for 5 nights. The scenery and whale watching aspects of the trip were excellent. The camps were comfortable and well supported by occasional re-supply from the base back in Port NcNiell. The camp on Sophia Island was particularly well appointed with already set tents, cots and a nice kitchen and sitting area. The food prepared by our guide was excellent and hearty. I would certainly recommend this group for paddlers of all levels of experience.

We learned a lot from him and enjoyed spending some time getting to know him. Our guide, Korry, was also excellent. He was also friendly and welcoming and made sure we were well fed and had a good time. There is never a guarantee of finding specific wildlife when you are out in the wild, but Larry and Korry knew the animals behaviors and made sure to stay up to date on recent patterns and updates from all the other local teams in order to give us the best chance to see orcas, humpbacks, eagles, seals, and lots of other wildlife while out kayaking. Even if we didn't see any whales the entire time, it still would have been a great trip. However, we did see lots of orca and humpbacks during our time. They even came right by our island one evening, where we could see them from our dinner table and hear them while sleeping in our tents. I highly recommend going with Larry and Discovery Expeditions. We hope to make another trip in the future.

Prices are pretty reasonable and we chose the two hour option due to our limited time during the sunset period. The staff were busy but friendly and assisted us with our kayaks. They will brief you about the kayaks, safety and where to go. Now, I would select a longer time to truly appreciate Deep Cove's natural beauty when you aren't dodging other kayaks or boats. The traffic can be somewhat chaotic in the summer time and it is main area for a lot of boaters heading out of the cove. We kayak around three islands within our two hour option, but didn't relax as much as we want. Again, the salt water, slight wind, and being in the 80's made it a wonderful but brief time.

Great place to kayak, incredible views, definitely worth a visit…read more Equipment and gear were great and in great shape. Our guides were knowledgeable and got us in and out of our kayak without us getting our feet wet. I didn't give five stars for two reasons. First, the two guides seemed a bit lax, they mostly paddled with us instead of taking lead and sweep positions, despite the fact that two out of the six of us had never kayaked before. They did look back periodically to check on everyone, but it was still strange compared to other kayak tours I've been on. Second, they didn't take pictures of us, other tours I've been on do it as a matter of course and email or post pictures to everyone. Still, this was a very worthwhile experience, and everyone enjoyed the views, the seals we saw in the water, etc., and no one had trouble keeping up despite the wind and the range of both ages and kayaking experience.
