The hype of cat cafe's has worn off, but the first Australian cat café has made it's home amongst the laneways by Melbourne Central. I like the concept, but you have to go here with the knowledge that these cats are from rescued homes. Many of them are very timid and like hiding and sleeping. As you can imagine, when you meet a cat for the first time, it can take time for them to warm up to you. In fact the only cat we got to have a greeting with was lazing around in the bed. So they didn't have much of a choice, or an escape route. Their facility is very nice, it's made for these cats enjoyment. The space is really well done, with tons to climb, scratch on and snuggle into. The Cat Café has two levels, one being more of a lounge type and the upstairs has seats for a café. Reservations are recommended to allocate a time. It's $12 per person per hour. And I'd suggest only allowing yourself an hour here. Unless you hit it off with one of the house cats, you'll spend most of your time wandering around, looking for them. The $12 entrance is solely a fee to be there. It's a "café" in the sense that you can buy a baked goodie or a coffee. I don't want to be judgemental, as it's only the first cat café I've been to. But don't come here with high expectations. read more

To say I was a little disappointed by the Cat Cafe would be a huge understatement. But I'm willing to put that down to one main thing, that will probably change over time! Before you go there you must book online. For $10 per person you are given an hour time slot to come visit the kitties. I arrived at the Cat Cafe with my friend for her bday. The downstairs area is really nothing special, not very inviting and from what I could tell is just a retail space and not a cafe as such. The lady who looked up our booking was... Well she did her job. She looked up our booking, made sure we read and signed the rules of the establishment and sent us on our way. No warm greeting or friendly banter. Something that could be easily remedied with some training. You are given a lanyard with a number which I guess acts as your TAB if you order anything while with the cats. But to be honest the actual use of the lanyard wasn't made clear to us. Upstairs we found 4 spacious room that looked like they came straight from a cats wet dream! Scratching posts, toys and sunny little sleeping spots a plenty. It was a disappointment to realise that for these four room and approximately 10-15 guests there were only 6 cats. But it's important to note that the cats are all beautiful and friendly and most importantly seem so happy!!!! We were offered a drink, either soft drink or coffee and that's really they only cafe aspect of the business. We spent our allowed time of 1 hour mostly sitting playing with toys ourselves or watching cats anxiously hoping they'd choose us to nap on or near!! It wasn't until our hour was nearly up that one of the ladies working there explained that 7 of their cats were in quarantine at the time as they had feline flu. Now I'm definitely not holding it against anyone that my desperate need for feline affection is apparently a huge turn off to all cats, not only the ones here. But I was hoping for a few more Kitties to at least try and win over with my charm! And in all honesty, had there been more cats (probably even more then the 13 they'd have if they were all healthy) I would have enjoyed the experience much more. They definitely have the space to allow for them. But I'm willing to wait. I imagine in a few months to a year this place will have worked out some kinks in booking, customer service and managing the cafe aspect of the business, as well as acquired a few more furry friends. This place is a cat lover's wonderland. You get to play with a bunch of cute, friendly cats in well decorated rooms filled with some of the coolest cat toys I've ever seen. The cats seem happy, healthy and well adjusted. It's clear the staff pay a great deal of attention to the needs of each individual cat. The cat areas are amazingly clean, especially for a place with over a dozen cats. The food and drink options are a bit limited, but that's not the point of the place. You'll probably be too distracted by the delightful cats to be too bothered about that. It has become one of my favourite Melbourne attractions. A few things to know: - Sometimes you can get in without a booking, but it's wise to book online in advance as some timeslots fill up. Sessions start on the hour. - The main cat area is up a tall set of stairs and there is no lift so it probably won't suit if you have trouble with stairs. - If you like playing with cats when they are at their most energetic, it will likely be best to come early in the day. The previous day I had gone to the café at 5pm to see if there were any walk-in spots but the café was full. So, I came back the next day having made a reservation for 4pm. If you arrive around the time you made a reservation for, they'll give you an hour from when you arrive, which was nice because I was only able to get there at 4:10. The café has two levels which the cats go between. Starting on the ground floor I played with some of the cats using the toys that were in the room. When you're there be sure to also check out the adorable ladder that the cats use to go between the two levels. Definitely check the FAQs for their recommendations on times you should visit. When I looked it said that the cats tended to be sleepier from 2-5, and I definitely noticed that the cats were getting more active and playful near the end of my stay The café has an assortment of cute cat-themed cookies, as well as regular coffee and tea drinks. I ordered a vanilla latte which was a bit sweet for my taste. Even though I originally found the entrance fee of $12 to be a bit steep, I had a lot of fun and felt it was worthwhile for a one-time visit. Love the concept of a cat cafe. Downstairs is a cat shop with all sorts of accessories, toys etc for your cat. The cafe is upstairs where there are 4 rooms with seating, toys and of course cats. I came in the afternoon around 1pm and of course they were sleepy, bad planning on my part. The lady here recommends coming at the first or last session when they are more active. It's very apparent that these cats are well taken care of! I bought a couple of items in the gift shop for my own felines. read more

So much low-key fun! We got here early, without a reservation (it wasn't working online the night before), and were admitted without any problems. There were at most six other people there at any one time and more than six cats, so the ratio was good! Given that we were there early, most of the cats were up and around. There were toys that we could jiggle around to engage them. The slumbering cats were fine with gentle petting. I had hoped that the environment would be cool and modern, but oh, well. We over-ordered on the sweets - the menu photos made me think the treats were smaller than actual. And the treats were just okay. I mean, we were here for the cats, after all. Should be called "People Cafe with occasional cat sighting". The Cat Cafe is a great idea in theory but there are simply too many cat loving peeps and too few cats. When we were there there were six cats and three were sleeping. This resulted in a gaggle of us staring bug eyed at the three cats who were up and about, variously vying for the disinterested attention of the felines. We left after 30 minutes. The cats seem well cared for here and they are certainly cute, but like many cats, they just don't want to be bothered. It feels like you're in someone's house waiting for them to entertain you when all they want to do is sit on the couch and watch downloads of Breaking Bad. Awkward! I've been to cat cafes in Asia and they are a bit more dynamic than this, with more cats in a slightly smaller space: This is probably less nice for the cats though. Future cat ladies of the world rejoice: this is your new favorite destination. As a bit of a misnomer, this is not a cafe. Perhaps a more appropriate term would be "palace" or "play place". This is a G-rated brothel for anyone who enjoys cats and would like to spend an hour in feline companionship. Melbourne's Cat Cafe hosts 15 furry friends, all rescued through local shelters, who now live in a historical building near Queen Vic Market. The upstairs consists of four public rooms full of more cat toys and climbing perches than I've ever seen, with cats lounging and leaping everywhere. Factor in a few couches and a strategically placed bird feeder outside and you've got yourself a kitty heaven. There are some strict rules before coming into the cat area, including washing your hands and promising not to bother any sleeping kitties. Workers are present to tend to the cats and ensure their general well-being, while also monitoring that visits are mutually enjoyed by both cats and visitors. The facilities were very surprisingly clean. The kitties' food and litter boxes are kept out of sight, and while we were there a staff member was making good use of a lint roller on the couches. You'll need to book in advance to come here. I'm told that morning is when the cats are most active; by afternoon it's nap time and they're bored with all the humans vying for their affection. $10 gets you one hour with the cats. On the ground level where you check in is what's essentially a store for crazy cat ladies, selling every piece of cat merchandise you've ever imagined. read more

This place is amazing. Wasn't sure what to expect, but all I needed to hear was "cats!" They all live upstairs in a beautiful old building, and roam the rooms as they please. They're all very pat-able, and some are very playful and friendly. I'm in love with Shakespeare! He's the most gorgeous kitten ever. And Jasper. And Ruby. And, well, all of them. You get to meet different cats each time you visit (I may have been a few times already....), depending on who's awake/feeling social. It's so great to see them in a place where they're so happy and cared for. It's just lovely to sit with cats around - so relaxing. Good range of drinks and snacks - no menu food, which makes sense because I can't imagine trying to eat a proper meal with cats around. Cat cafe was well setup with two areas downstairs chilling out and upstairs were the cafe is. Due to the council the cafe is sealed off behind door and there is a waitress that takes for order and then delivers it to you your items. They can only serve coffees and cakes that's all the council lets them but you can take them to either space. The cats were all relaxed and well taken care of laying around on the many beds and toys that were supplied. Small shop to buy things as well. Wish there was more cafe foodie options but they are doing the best they can. read more

Purrfect experience. I went there for the first time about a month ago, very friendly staff and after signing in stating that I had read and understood the "Cat Rules" I walked into one of the four spacious rooms and plonked myself on a couch - suddenly I was surrounded by gorgeous felines all wanting a pat or me to play with the toys. Ruby the one eyed sweetheart showed me how good she was at fetching her little green toy (omg so adorable) and Lottie the bushy tailed beauty purred loudly in my face and wanted me to pat her and only her! Best hour of my year so far - staff bring you drinks and snacks- hot chocolates good and recommend their little cakes.
